White & Case Partner Karen Asner Receives Burton Award for Distinguished Legal Writing
Karen M. Asner, partner in White & Case's New York office, has been named recipient of a 2007 Burton Award for Legal Writing Excellence, marking the sixth consecutive year that a White & Case lawyer has won the award.

Asner is a commercial litigator and the Firm's global administrative partner, in which role she oversees all administrative aspects of the Firm's 35 offices and helps shape firm culture, policies and strategic business objectives. She was recognized by the Burton Foundation for the article, "Where the Women Are," published on Law.com's ongoing IN FOCUS article series.

The article, which ran last July, addresses the challenges of attracting, promoting and retaining women lawyers and the Firm's initiatives to respond to these challenges. It was one of Karen's regular series appearing on Law.com about large firm management.

"We are committed to the recruitment, retention and career development of our women lawyers. Karen plays a significant role in our ongoing women's advancement initiatives and I am pleased she has been granted a Burton Award for her article on women's issues relating to the legal profession," said Duane Wall, Managing Partner of White & Case.

In addition to the Burton Award given to Asner, a special award was granted to Richard H. Walker, General Counsel of Deutsche Bank AG, who was named as one of five "Legends in the Law", a first-time award given to in-house counsel by the Burton Foundation. Walker was nominated for the award by White & Case in recognition for his dedicated service in both the public and private sectors.

Asner and Walker will be honored at the 2007 Burton Awards program, which will be held at the Great Hall of the Library of Congress in Washington, DC on Monday, June 4.

Stoel Rives Bolsters National Energy Practice: Minneapolis Lawyer Group Enhances Firm’s Agribusiness and Renewable Energy Capability
Stoel Rives LLP, a business law firm that provides services throughout the United States from its offices in Oregon, Washington, California, Utah and Idaho, today announced the expansion of its nationally recognized renewable energy practice with the hiring of 10 leading energy and agribusiness lawyers in Minneapolis, Minnesota and the opening of a Minneapolis office. Stoel Rives’ renewable energy practice is on the cutting edge of work for wind, ethanol, biodiesel, solar, wave, biomass and geothermal clients.

The Minneapolis lawyers joining Stoel Rives have a very extensive agribusiness and food industry practice and are leaders in the development of renewable energy projects—including ethanol, biodiesel, biomass and wind energy facilities. The 10 attorneys were previously partners at the Minneapolis firm of Lindquist & Vennum PLLP, a major general business firm in Minnesota.

“Stoel Rives is a national leader in renewable energy and agribusiness law, and has a superb reputation in corporate, litigation, technology and natural resource-based law,” said Mark Hanson, a leader of the new Minneapolis office. “We see additional growth in the renewable energy sector, and Stoel Rives is the firm of choice in renewable energy. Stoel Rives also has a very strong record of helping agricultural clients, like those we work with, succeed.”

“We’ve been extremely impressed with the firm’s lawyers and know how highly regarded they are in renewable energy, corporate and agribusiness circles. We plan to grow the office here in the coming months and years. The national scope of Stoel Rives will allow us to provide a greater array of legal resources to the clients we work with in the Midwest and around the nation," Hanson added.

Other partners joining Hanson in the Minneapolis office are: Ron McFall, Kevin Prohaska, Joe Thompson, David Quinby, Jonathan Miesen, Kevin Johnson, Eric Bartsch, Joel Dahlgren and Marc Al.

Stoel Rives' chairman, Ron Lone, shares Hanson's enthusiasm. "The combination of our new lawyers in Minneapolis and our existing lawyers throughout the West will further strengthen our renewable energy and agribusiness practices nationally. These are key growth sectors, and the lawyers who join us today have well-established ties to businesses in those industries. We can help those businesses as they grow and their legal needs become more complex. The market opportunities are significant, and we look forward to capitalizing on them for our clients," Lone said.

“The addition of our new colleagues in Minnesota reaffirms our strong commitment to the renewable energy and natural resource arenas and strengthens our experience and ability to serve existing and new agribusiness clients,” said Beth Ugoretz, Stoel Rives' managing partner. “We believe our integrated approach to serving clients across disciplines and offices enables us to be highly responsive to our clients and to put teams together that are very skilled and experienced in specific industries. The addition of these talented lawyers will add depth to our firm and promote the kind of team orientation we believe sets us apart. We welcome them to Stoel Rives."
