Lane Powell Web Videos Debut
"Lane Powell's award-winning Web site became even more state-of-the art when the Firm's new online videos debuted on June 4.

In the short video clips, Lane Powell attorneys discuss topics such as their motivations for pursuing careers in law, the insights they bring to their industry and practice groups, and their pro bono work. The videos appear on select Industry and Practice pages, as well as in individual attorneys' profiles.

The initial video launch contains contributions from Ron Beard, Grant Degginger, Mike Nesteroff, Mike Reilly and Karen Williams.

Industries featured include Financial Institutions, Construction, Retail and Public/Private Partnerships. Practice groups represented are Labor and Employment and Environmental.

More attorneys, industries and practice groups will be added in the coming months."

20 Attorneys Selected as 2007 Washington SuperLawyers
A special section of the June 2007 issue of Washington Law & Politics lists 20 Lane Powell attorneys named as Washington SuperLawyers. SuperLawyers are selected in a three-step process: 1) A ballot is mailed to every lawyer who has been practicing law in Washington for more than five years; 2) A panel for each of more than 60 practice areas reviews the ballot results to create a list of nominees; and 3) A lawyer-led research department looks for lawyers who may have been overlooked in the general survey and evaluates the credentials of each nominated lawyer. Only five percent of Washington attorneys are given this award.

Kirkland & Ellis International LLP Represents Change Capital Partners in Sale of Hillarys Blinds
"Kirkland & Ellis International LLP is advising Change Capital Partners in respect of its sale of portfolio company Hillarys Blinds Limited for approximately £225 million. The purchaser is Bellotto Acquisition Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of European Capital Limited. Hillarys is the UK's leading provider of made-to-measure window blinds.

Leading the Kirkland deal team are corporate partners Matthew Hurlock and Rory Mullarkey out of the Firm's London office. Other Kirkland attorneys (all London based) working on the matter are tax partner John Baldry along with associates James MacArthur, Claire McDaid, Frank Webster and Samrad Nazer.

Kirkland also served as lead counsel on the acquisition by Change Capital Partners of Hillarys from Close Brothers Private Equity for £115 million in 2004."

Sonnenschein Adds Litigator Steven Velkei in Los Angeles
Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal LLP announced today that Steven A. Velkei has joined the firm as a partner in its national Litigation Group. Velkei will reside in Sonnenschein’s Los Angeles office.

“Steve has litigated cases in a broad array of industries, and his experience will benefit our clients across the United States and abroad,” said Michael Barr, national chair of Sonnenschein’s Litigation Group. “We are thrilled that Steve has decided to join our team.”

Velkei has successfully litigated class actions as well as complex business, securities and entertainment disputes. His clients include major financial institutions, prominent Southern California developers and hotel owners and several independent film entertainment companies. He also represents one of the largest publicly-traded real estate investment trusts in the country and its affiliated entities.

“Sonnenschein’s litigation group has a stellar reputation and the national scope of the practice will provide me with great opportunities to expand my practice,” said Velkei.

Velkei joins Sonnenschein from Liner Yankelevitz Sunshine & Regenstreif LLP. He was previously counsel at Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom LLP. Velkei received a J.D. degree, with honors, from University of California, Hastings College of the Law and a B.A. degree from Princeton University. He was named a Southern California Super Lawyer in 2006 and 2007, a Lawdragon New Star in 2006 and sits on the board of the Los Angeles Business Council.

Duane A. Daiker Receives Board Certification as Appellate Practice Specialist
Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP is pleased to announce that Duane A. Daiker, partner in the Tampa office, has been certified as an Appellate Practice Specialist by the Florida Board of Legal Specialization and Education. There are only 157 attorneys in Florida with this certification.

Mr. Daiker represents individual and corporate clients in a variety of commercial litigation and appellate matters in state and federal court. He also represents sureties in connection with payment, performance, and fiduciary bonds. In addition to his full-time practice, Mr. Daiker serves as an Adjunct Professor at St. Petersburg College, teaching classes in legal research and writing.

Mr. Daiker received his J.D., with high honors, from the University of Florida in 1994, and his B.A., with high honors, from the University of Florida in 1991. Mr. Daiker is also certified by the Supreme Court of Florida as an Arbitrator and Circuit Court Mediator.

Andrew Minkiewicz Receives Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service Award
"Andrew Minkiewicz, an Associate in the Government Relations and Public Policy Practice Group, has been awarded the Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service Award by the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, Admiral Thad Allen.

The Coast Guard Meritorious Public Service Award is the second-highest Public Service Award and recognizes unusual courage in advancing a Coast Guard mission, a substantial contribution to the Coast Guard that produced tangible results, or specific individual accomplishments that provide unique benefits to the public. Mr. Minkiewicz received this award in honor of his time on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation’s Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard Subcommittee. During his tenure as Senior Counsel and Staff Director of the Subcommittee he passed three Coast Guard reauthorizations and authored the language that transferred the Coast Guard into the Department of Homeland Security."

Katten’s Nina Matis Named Among 50 Most Influential Women Lawyers in America
Katten Muchin Rosenman LLP is pleased to announce that Nina B. Matis, national co-chair of the Firm’s Real Estate Practice, has been named among the 50 Most Influential Women Lawyers in America by The National Law Journal. This honor comes just one year after the same publication named Ms. Matis among the 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America. The list was published for the first time since 1998 in the magazine’s May 28 issue.

The National Law Journal’s list of the 50 Most Influential Women Lawyers in America was developed based on reader nominations, as well as the publication’s own research. Attorneys selected for the list were those who have had a national impact in their fields of practice over the last five years – “female lawyers with the demonstrated power to change the legal landscape, shape public affairs, launch industries and do big things.”

In selecting Ms. Matis, The National Law Journal called her “one of the world’s top real estate lawyers” and noted that she “has generated more than $10 million in client billings for her firm for five consecutive years…and routinely handles transactions valued in excess of $500 million, and some exceeding $1 billion.”

“We are delighted that Nina has once again been honored by The National Law Journal,” said Vincent A.F.
