Cox Smith Matthews Named One of San Antonio’s Best Places to Work
Cox Smith Matthews announced today that it was named one of the Best Places to Work in San Antonio by the San Antonio Business Journal.

This year, Cox Smith Matthews ranked number seven in the Large Business Category (companies with 151 or more employees). Each of the 39 companies selected was recognized with an award at a luncheon held today at the Oak Hills Country Club.

According to the San Antonio Business Journal, more than 150 companies responded to an initial questionnaire published in its print publication and on its Web site. Of those, 39 were selected for further evaluation based on the number of employees. Employees from the 39 companies were invited to respond to a survey that judged the company in 10 categories, including: team effectiveness, retention risk, alignment with goals, trust with co-workers, individual contribution, manager effectiveness, trust in senior leaders, feeling valued, work engagement and people practices. Winners were selected based on employee measurement of 37 attributes known to drive employee engagement. The top companies in each category were considered the winners.

“Being nominated by our employees as one of the best places to work in San Antonio is a remarkable honor,” said Jamie Smith, managing director of Cox Smith Matthews. “Our attorneys and staff work as hard at providing the best solutions for our clients as we do creating a dynamic and rewarding work environment for them, and we are very proud of what we are achieving together.”

With legislation moving quickly in Congress, the device industry is stepping up its efforts to be heard in the long-running debate on reforming the U.S. patent system. According to Les Bookoff of Finnegan Henderson, the patent office sent a final rule to the Office of Management and Budget for review in April. “There are rumors that the rule may allow firms three continuations instead of one, but it remains to be seen,” Bookoff said May 18 at MDMA’s annual meeting in Washington, DC. The rule could go into effect as early as this fall, he noted.

Dickstein Shapiro LLP Continues Its Strategic Growth in Los Angeles
Dickstein Shapiro, rated as one of the nation’s ten best law firms on The American Lawyer’s “A-List” in 2006, continues its strategic growth in Los Angeles with the additions of James Turken and Amy Rubinfeld as partners and Chanda R. Weber and John L. Tuell as associates to the firm’s Business Litigation Practice.

“We are excited to add Jim and Amy to our growing Los Angeles office, and the depth of experience they bring in business litigation is a tremendous complement to our other practices,” said Linda Kornfeld, Managing Partner of Dickstein Shapiro’s Los Angeles office. “It’s a great time for Dickstein Shapiro as we continue to expand our footprint in the LA market.”

Mr. Turken and Ms. Rubinfeld, both previously with Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner LLP, bring a significant amount of experience in business litigation, and form a solid base for the continued expansion of the practice in the Los Angeles market. Most recently, Mr. Turken was the Deputy National Chair for the Commercial Litigation Department at Thelen Reid, and also led the firm’s Commercial Litigation Department in Los Angeles. He previously was the Chair of Litigation and a Member of the Board at Buchalter, Nemer, Fields & Younger P.C. He has tried over 50 jury trials in his nearly 30-year career, and focuses his practice on corporate, intellectual property, unfair competition, and securities matters, among others.

Ms. Rubinfeld focuses on litigation involving business, commercial, employment, and real estate matters, and has represented companies from a variety of industries, including sports production, computer manufacturing, and apparel. In 2000, The National Law Journal recognized Mr. Turken and Ms. Rubinfeld in its “Largest Jury Verdicts” issue for their role in a high-profile breach of contract case (Techmedia Computer Systems Corp. v. Tae Il Media Co. Ltd.). They successfully represented Tae Il, obtaining a jury award of more than $92 million for their client.

Joining Mr. Turken and Ms. Rubinfeld from Thelen Reid are associates Ms. Weber and Mr. Tuell. In the coming weeks, Dickstein Shapiro plans to continue to hire additional associates to support this growing practice.

“Dickstein Shapiro has highly regarded litigation capabilities and is nationally recognized as a leader in diversity and quality of life issues,” said Mr. Turken. “Amy and I look forward to working in concert with the rest of the LA office to further grow the business litigation capabilities and be better able to serve our clients.”

Dickstein Shapiro is rapidly expanding its Los Angeles office, having recently moved to a state-of-the-art office space in Century City’s Twin Towers. The firm launched its Los Angeles presence with the addition of the highly regarded insurance coverage attorneys from Pasich & Kornfeld in 2005. Over the past year, Dickstein Shapiro’s Los Angeles office has grown to almost 20 attorneys through strategic expansion of its Insurance Coverage, Entertainment and Business Litigation Practices.
