Former Nortel Networks Senior Counsel Joins Private Equity Practice in Orange County
Stephanie Siegel Brecher, former director and senior counsel at Nortel Networks, has joined the private equity practice of Bingham McCutchen LLP as a partner in the Orange County office.

Brecher brings more than 13 years of corporate legal experience from two multinational telecommunications companies and private practice. She will work with Bingham’s private equity clients and handle middle-market mergers and acquisitions, divestitures and investments, the types of matters on which she focused at Nortel.

“Stephanie’s extensive experience, both in private practice and most recently with Nortel Networks, fits extremely well with our current deal flow and fills a need for additional depth at her level,” said Orange County partner James Loss, co-leader of the private equity practice. “Her experience in the telecommunications arena also provides a natural tie to our firm’s telecommunications, media and technology practice.”

While at Nortel, Brecher was responsible for structuring and executing mergers and acquisitions of private and public companies as well as venture fund and minority equity investments and joint ventures in the United States and abroad. During her nine-year career with the company, she handled several multimillion-dollar transactions and regularly advised senior Nortel executives on business strategy and risk in conjunction with these deals.

Brecher’s in-house experience with major players in the telecommunications industry will give clients a unique point of view in corporate and technology transactions.

“I understand first-hand how meeting the legal needs of a company must be fully integrated with supporting its business objectives,” Brecher said. “I have shared the pressures faced by in-house counsel and can offer the high level of service expected from an outside attorney without the language gap that can occasionally arise with lawyers who have never worked outside a firm environment. Additionally, because I’ve been on both the sell-side and buy-side of numerous M&A transactions, I can understand, negotiate and advise clients on all facets of the issues presented in these deals.”

Prior to joining Nortel in 1998, Brecher was an assistant corporate counsel at MCI. She was responsible for executing minority equity investments and international joint ventures, with particular emphasis on Europe and Latin America. She also negotiated and advised senior management on commercial agreements, including cellular resale, outsourcing and licensing.

Brecher is a 1993 graduate of Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, where she was Note & Comment Editor of the California Law Review, and a 1989 cum laude graduate of Princeton University. She also received a master’s in international relations from The London School of Economics and Political Science in 1990. She began her legal career as a Law Clerk to the Honorable Judge Richard A. Gadbois of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California.

She is admitted to practice in California and Washington, D.C., home of Bingham’s telecommunications, media and technology group

Study Cites Alston & Bird as the Top Corporate Law Firm in Atlanta
Corporate Board Member magazine announced that directors working in Atlanta named Alston & Bird the best corporate law firm in Atlanta. The results of the magazine’s seventh annual Legal Industry Research Study, sponsored by FTI Consulting, were released on June 11.

Corporate Board Member/FTI Consulting's annual study identifies the top 20 national corporate law firms and the top five corporate law firms in 25 major metropolitan areas, according to directors serving on boards of publicly traded companies listed with the NASDAQ Stock Market, New York Stock Exchange or American Stock Exchange.

“Doing well in our survey has become a singular badge of honor, for the very reason that it doesn’t come from the law firms’ peers,” said William S. Rukeyser, editorial director of Corporate Board Member. “It’s an accolade from their customers—the directors, executives and general counsel who hire them, pay their bills, and thrive or suffer from their advice.”

Corporate Board Member surveyed directors serving on boards of publicly traded companies listed with the NASDAQ, New York or American Stock Exchanges. Directors received a questionnaire specific to their location that included a list of 20 local firms and two write-in options. To be included in the list, each firm had to practice business, corporate or commercial law and had to be one of the 20 largest firms in its area by number of attorneys. Respondents were asked to select the five local law firms, from the list provided or as a write-in, they would most likely select to aid their companies on a broad range of corporate legal issues. The top five law firms in each area are listed in the magazine based on the number of votes received.`

Foley Welcomes Summer Intern From Georgetown University Law Center
Foley & Lardner LLP announced today that for the second consecutive year the firm will welcome a summer intern from Georgetown University Law Center to assist with its pro bono work with the Archdiocesan Legal Network (ALN).

The internship is part of a firm program designed to encourage law students to incorporate pro bono service into their legal careers and offer them opportunities to provide legal assistance to low-income and indigent clients through placement with nonprofit organizations in D.C.

Foley, with the assistance of Georgetown's Office of Public Interest and Community Service (OPICS), selected Shannon Baker-Branstetter as its intern for this year. Her internship will last 10 weeks, and she will work with both the ALN, a nonprofit organization in the District, and Foley's office in Washington Harbour. The ALN's practice areas include bankruptcy, employment/discrimination, family law/domestic violence, government entitlements, landlord-tenant and wills/probate cases.

Baker-Branstetter will assist ALN with development of community legal education seminars; coordination of client intake; management of clients seeking pro bono legal services; recruitment of volunteer attorneys for clients for a variety of civil law matters; training and coordination of ALN volunteers; building coalitions with other nonprofit agencies serving low-income residents of D.C. and Maryland; and development of ALN newsletters. After seven weeks at ALN, she will spend three weeks at Foley's office, concentrating exclusively on pro bono matters.

She has a broad background in volunteer service that has shaped her outlook on the types of social services, legal and non-legal, that are provided to low-income communities. Her experience includes serving as intake volunteer with the Employment Justice Center Workers' Rights Clinics and as a Juvenile Division intern investigator for the Public Defender Service of the District of Columbia.

In addition to its relationship with Georgetown, the firm recently established a summer internship program with the University of Virginia Law School and Just Neighbors, a nonprofit dedicated to providing immigration services to low income clients.

ALN is administered by Catholic Community Services of the Archdiocese of Washington. This program, established in 1989, has assisted an estimated 25,000 indigent clients by providing information, direct legal assistance, and referrals to volunteer attorneys, law firms and other appropriate organizations.
