T&K Ranked as Top Dallas Firm
The international law firm of Thompson & Knight LLP is proud to announce the Corporate and Securities Practice Group has been ranked among the top 5 corporate law firms in Dallas in a list published by Corporate Board Member. This is the publication's seventh annual list of top corporate law firms in the U.S. Thompson & Knight is ranked 2nd this year.

"We are honored to be recognized again by Corporate Board Member," says Fred W. Fulton, Corporate and Securities Practice Leader. "This award is an indicator of the client-focused service our corporate attorneys provide to our clients."

Corporate Board Member surveyed directors serving on boards of publicly-traded companies listed with the New York, NASDAQ, and American Stock Exchanges. The directors were divided into groups based on the location of their companies within metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). Directors in each of the featured 25 MSAs received a questionnaire specific to their location that included a list of 20 local firms and two write-in opinions. To be included in the list, each firm had to practice business, corporate, or commercial law and be one of the 20 largest firms in its area by number of attorneys.

Corporate Board Member compiled the lists of local law firms using Martindale-Hubbell's Law Directory. Respondents were asked to select five local law firms, from the list provided or as a write-in, they would most likely select to aid their companies on a broad range of corporate legal issues. The top five law firms in each MSA are listed in the magazine based on the number of votes received.

Shearman & Sterling to Advise on One of the Largest Energy Projects in Africa
Shearman & Sterling has been appointed by CIC Energy and International Power to advise the lenders on the $5.5 billion 3,600 MW Mmamabula coal-fired power and mining project.

Mmamabula is one of the largest and most ambitious Independent Power Projects to be developed in Africa to date. The Project will be built on top of the largest untapped coal reserves in Botswana with enough coal to support the Project for at least 40 years. It is ideally located near the South African border and just 60km from the South African grid allowing it the flexibility to sell energy into both the Botswanan and South African markets.

The project will be split into two phases, the first of which includes the development of a 2400MW coal-fired power plant and the development of the associated coal field. The current plan is for the project debt to be raised entirely in Rand.

Commenting on the deal Shearman & Sterling partner Nick Buckworth said: “This is exactly the sort of deal Shearman & Sterling is focused on: a complex project in a new jurisdiction demanding sector experience, common sense and the co-operation of all involved. We are all very much looking forward to helping make this Project a great success.”

The Shearman & Sterling team also includes counsel Gregor Page (London - Project Development & Finance) and associate Anna Chung (London - Project Development & Finance).
