Antitrust Team Gains Win in Court of Appeals
Baker Hostetler's antitrust team won dismissal of an antitrust case against El Día, Inc., the leading newspaper publisher in Puerto Rico. In an opinion released June 18, 2007, the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit held that an earlier decision rejecting an antitrust claim brought by a competitor barred that same competitor from subsequently reasserting a similar claim, and that the competitor could not obtain a "rematch" by repackaging its claim in a different guise.

Intergum Sold to Cadbury Schweppes for $450 Million
White & Case acted for Intergum, the largest manufacturer of chewing gum in Turkey, in its sale to confectionary giant Cadbury Schweppes for $450 million. Intergum, which is owned by the Amram family, employs approximately 1,200 people and has an estimated 46 percent share of the Turkish chewing gum market, which itself grew by 17 percent last year.

"Turkey has been a red hot market for some time. We're seeing a lot of activity in a broad variety of areas; not just M&A and acquisition finance, but also real estate, capital markets and general finance work," commented White & Case partner Peter Finlay, co-head of the Firm's Corporate practice in London. "The impact of previous structural reforms and changes to fiscal and monetary policy is now being felt, and the outlook for the Turkish economy looks to be one of sustainable growth."

The White & Case team advising Intergum was led by partner Peter Finlay in London, working closely with associate Alan Burke and trainee David Wright in London and partner Emre Derman and associates Barlas Balcioglu, Eren Gonen and Ozgur Nemutlu in Istanbul. In addition, counsel John Runeckles and associate Ania Ochmanska in London advised on intellectual property issues; and partner Peter Menon and associate James Meakin, provided counsel on the tax aspects of the transaction.

White & Case has advised on numerous ground-breaking deals in Turkey, including a number of multi-billion dollar M&A deals in the banking sector and some of the country's most significant financings.
