The international law firm of Chadbourne & Parke LLP announced today that Sean P. McGuinness has joined the Firm as counsel in the Washington, DC office. Mr. McGuinness will draw on his experience serving major clients in his new role as a member of Chadbourne’s corporate department.

“Sean’s 25 years of legal experience in Washington have given him an exceptional understanding of the business and regulatory issues faced by clients in that environment,” said Chadbourne Managing Partner Charles O’Neill. “He is an outstanding addition to Chadbourne’s practice in Washington.”

Mr. McGuinness, 52, most recently a partner at the Washington law firm of Fleischman & Walsh LLP, has specialized in transactional matters for the oil and gas industry involving securities offerings, and mergers and acquisitions. “Sean knows Washington inside and out, and he can guide clients through the most complicated corporate transactions. His experience in key areas will greatly strengthen our corporate practice,” said Chadbourne Washington Office Managing Partner Andrew Giaccia.

Mr. McGuinness holds a B.S, magna cum laude, in philosophy and mathematics from Tufts University and a J.D. from Georgetown University, where he was Executive Editor of The Georgetown Law Journal.

Sullivan & Cromwell Receives 2007 Chambers USA Awards for Excellence
Sullivan & Cromwell LLP is pleased to announce that Chairman H. Rodgin Cohen was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his “outstanding contribution to the legal profession” at the 2007 Chambers USA Awards for Excellence last week. Sullivan & Cromwell also received the 2007 Chambers USA Award for Excellence as Corporate Tax Team of the Year.

According to Chambers, Mr. Cohen was selected for the prestigious award in recognition of his “success in shaping” the banking industry and serving as a model of “technical skill and personal integrity for the profession.” Mr. Cohen is widely regarded as a pivotal figure in American banking owing to his involvement in watershed developments that have helped create the industry as it is today. His achievements include helping to lay the groundwork for interstate banking, acting in the first U.S. public offering by a foreign bank, and representing principal participants in nearly all the major bank acquisitions in U.S. banking, including the industry’s first large hostile takeover.

Chambers also cited Mr. Cohen as ‘a legend’ in the regulatory sector. He currently serves on the IIF Special Committee for a Strategic Dialogue for Effective Regulation. He recently has been appointed to The New York State Commission to Modernize the Regulation of Financial Services created by Governor Eliot Spitzer, and to The Financial Services Roundtable’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Enhancing Competitiveness.

In addition to the honor conferred upon Mr. Cohen, Sullivan & Cromwell was named Corporate Tax Team of the Year. Tax partner Diana Wollman accepted the award on behalf of S&C, noting that “a great tax group can exist only if it is part of a great firm.” The awards are based on the publisher’s research in which considerable weight is given to client feedback as well as public information about the Firm’s activities throughout the year. Sullivan & Cromwell is widely recognized as having one of the premier tax practices in both the U.S. and France, and its partners are leading experts in their fields. S&C’s Tax Group has been ranked #1 in Chambers USA for five straight years, since the inception of this guide in 2003.

In 2006, the lawyers of S&C’s Tax Group collaborated with the Firm’s securities and bank regulatory lawyers to create a new generation of innovative hybrid securities, which are designed to achieve enhanced equity treatment by rating agencies, debt treatment for the issuer (with an interest deduction) and, for bank holding company issuers, Tier 1 regulatory capital treatment. S&C’s legal team has pioneered virtually every major development relating to hybrid securities, and was involved in more than 25 hybrid securities offerings in 2006, having an aggregate principal amount of nearly $20 billion.
In France, S&C’s Tax Group has largely focused on acquisitions, restructurings and dispositions for corporate and financial clients, and on organizing leveraged-finance acquisitions for various investor groups.

Reflecting on the awards, Mr. Cohen said, “Our dedication to serving our clients around the world inspires the lawyers at S&C to achieve excellence in the practice of law. I am deeply honored to receive this recognition. I am also proud that the innovation and expertise of S&C’s Tax Group has been recognized this year.”

Pierce Atwood LLP Stands Apart Among Top Law Firms in Maine According To Global Researchers at Chambers and Partners
Occupying a solo position as the state’s top law firm for litigation and environmental law, Pierce Atwood LLP once again dominates the Chambers and Partners law firm rankings for Maine, based on the firm’s “unmatched size, depth and quality,” according to the listings released today.

The firm also received tier one rankings for its corporate, real estate and labor & employment practice groups, with Chambers citing praise that included accolades for the firm’s “vast coverage and competence in all services,” and “a strategic outlook.”

Pierce Atwood LLP is the only law firm in Maine to be listed in the top tier of all five practice areas ranked each year by Chambers and Partners.

The Chambers USA listing made special note of the firm’s recent success representing “Tom’s of Maine in the $100 million sale of its controlling interest to Colgate-Palmolive.”

Twenty-four attorneys at the law firm were individually recognized for excellence in the five practice areas ranked by Chambers USA.
Chambers and Partners is an independent British legal research firm that publishes rankings of the leading law firms around the world.
