McAtee Advises Summer Associates On How to Succeed in a Law Firm
Jenner & Block Partner Michelle M. McAtee recently spoke with Chicago summer associates on how to get the most out of their summer at a law firm and how to maximize chances of making a favorable impression.

The program, entitled, “Young Lawyers Section’s 2007 Summer Associate Basic Training Seminar,” was sponsored by the Chicago Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section and included a panel of legal recruiting professionals.

In addition to Ms. McAtee, who co-chairs Jenner & Block’s summer associate program, Peggy Balesteri, partner and chair of the summer committee for the Chicago office of the law firm of Winston & Strawn LLP, Jacob Mihm, senior associate and co-chair of the summer program at Ungaretti and Harris, and Tanvir Rohman, Hiring and Training Attorney at Drinker Biddle Gardner Carton, spoke on the panel.

The panelists suggested that law students can get the most out of their summer by volunteering for a variety of projects in different areas, always meeting deadlines, and building a portfolio of case work. They also reminded the students of basic tips such as rechecking work, asking plenty of questions, and billing time correctly.

The panelists also suggested that the summer associates interact with professional staff as much as possible by attending firm-sponsored social functions, always acting as a “team player,” and by showing interest and enthusiasm in everything they do.

The panelists advised that a summer associate should avoid mistakes such as dressing too casually, arriving late to work, and not using proper discretion in emails.

Mike Rohan, Vice Chair of the Chicago Bar Association’s Young Lawyers Section and a senior associate at Winston & Strawn LLP, gave introductory remarks at the event.
