Local Environmental Attorney Joseph Manko Moderates Pennsylvania Bar Institute Program on Climate Change Law
Joseph M. Manko, a founding partner of Manko, Gold, Katcher & Fox, LLP in Bala Cynwyd, will moderate a Pennsylvania Bar Institute (PBI) program on Climate Change Law for Pennsylvania Lawyers on Wednesday, July 11 at the CLE Conference Center at the Wannamaker Building in Philadelphia.

Climate change law is an important issue beginning to affect Pennsylvania lawyers and their clients. Pennsylvania and other states are working to increase renewable energy as well as energy efficiency and conservation. More and more cases are being brought in state and federal courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, and Congress is closer to adopting major legislation regulating greenhouse gas emissions. These laws, initiatives and cases will have broad and lasting effects. Manko, who has 34 years of experience in environmental law and is a strong advocate and academic expert on environmental compliance and protection, will moderate Climate Change Law for Pennsylvania Lawyers, presented by Pennsylvania Bar Institute. Recently, Manko has delivered lectures on global warming to local and international audiences, including his presentation in December 2006 at an international conference in Bariloche, Argentina. Manko has served as a lecturer-in-law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, teaching courses on environmental law, practice and policy, and as a guest lecturer at Vermont Law School.

The program will focus on Climate Change Litigation; State, Regional and Federal Initiatives; Pennsylvania Energy and Climate Change Initiatives; Business of Climate Change; and Corporate Disclosure and Ethics.

Climate Change Law for Pennsylvania Lawyers will be held on Wednesday, July 11 at the CLE Conference Center, Wanamaker Building, 10th floor, Suite 1010, Juniper Street entrance (between 13th and Broad Streets), Philadelphia. The full-day course will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and a luncheon at 11:45 a.m. CLE credits will be offered.

RQ&N Announces Formation of The Venture Practice
Five lawyers from the nationally-recognized law firm of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati will join the firm at the end of June and form The Venture Practice at RQN

Ray Quinney & Nebeker P.C. (“RQN”), one of Utah’s largest law firms and winner of the “Best in State” award for legal services in Utah for each of the last two years, today announced the formation of The Venture Practice group within its Business Law Section, comprised of five lawyers joining the firm from the national law firm of Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati (“WSGR”). They will join the firm at the end of June.

Mark Bonham, a long-time corporate and securities partner at WSGR, and Matthew Wells, a leading venture capital attorney, will become shareholders at RQN. They will be joined by senior associates Aaron Murdock, Chris Shoff and Justin Judd along with some associated members of their staff. These lawyers will join the RQN Business Law Section and continue to represent technology and life science companies, many of which are backed by institutional venture capital investors.

“We are thrilled to add to our corporate practice the tremendous skills of this group,” said James S. Jardine, RQN managing director. “We see many opportunities to share with our clients the things they’ve learned from their Silicon Valley practice while at the same time giving their clients access to local expertise in a much broader way.”

The formation of The Venture Practice at RQN is designed to combine Salt Lake City’s largest group of technology and venture capital lawyers with a strong, full-service local platform to focus on the local market, adapting to the economics and needs of Utah and Intermountain Region companies and venture funds while delivering legal services of national caliber. The lawyers spearheading The Venture Practice at RQN bring deep experience in venture capital transactions, mergers and acquisitions and public offerings (including Utah IPOs for Omniture, Altiris, Overstock and Sonic Innovations). Both Bonham and Murdock are named in Utah’s “Legal Elite,” as are RQN corporate attorneys Gary Winger, Michael Spence, Mark Cotter and Scott B. Finlinson. Bonham and Winger have been named in the Chambers Guide as leading Corporate/M&A attorneys in the region.

“We have long admired this team and are looking forward to integrating them into our existing corporate, securities, and mergers and acquisition practice,” said R. Gary Winger, chair of the business law section at RQN.

The Venture Practice group of lawyers has acted as legal advisor in completing nearly 100 venture capital transactions, 80 bridge financings, 46 M&A deals and more than a dozen public offerings in the past decade, primarily in Utah and the Intermountain West. They join RQN’s Business Law Section, which has acted as legal advisers in more than 100 M&A transactions and numerous private placements of securities during the same period.

“We are pleased to join the outstanding team at RQN. This is a terrific platform and will allow us to continue our focus on Utah’s important venture practice. We are confident we will maintain a strong relationship with WSGR and look forward to working with them on projects in Utah and elsewhere,” said Bonham. The Venture Practice at RQN will continue its market-leading practice in start-ups, venture capital, mergers and acquisitions, securities offerings and intellectual property transactions.

M&S HONORED WITH 2007 MARYLAND PRO BONO SERVICE AWARD
The Pro Bono Resource Center of Maryland (PBRC) presented Miles & Stockbridge P.C.’s Domestic Violence Pro Bono group with a 2007 Maryland Pro Bono Service Award at the recent Maryland State Bar Association Annual Meeting.

Formed in 2005, the Firm’s Domestic Violence Pro Bono Group helps women and children who are victims of severe domestic violence obtain no-cost legal representation.

"We feel extremely touched to receive this recognition. We take great pride in our domestic violence program as it meets three key needs of a successful law firm,” said Stephen J. Cullen, Pro Bono Director at Miles & Stockbridge. “It makes a crucial difference to the victims we help, it gives our young lawyers essential and substantial ‘thinking on your feet’ trial experience, and it allows our colleagues to give back meaningfully to the community in which we practice.”

The program’s partnership between Miles & Stockbridge and Sinai Hospital Women’s and Children’s Clinic allows social workers from the Clinic to refer victims to members of the Miles & Stockbridge domestic violence group.

The fourteen-member domestic violence pro bono group includes paralegals, administrative assistants, a court liaison, and lawyers with the Firm. Their contributions have represented over 40 victims at a nearly 100% success rate, either through a contested hearing/trial or through a negotiated settlement with the respondent.

The Maryland Pro Bono Service Awards are statewide awards honoring outstanding attorneys and non-attorneys who have made a significant contribution to the delivery of pro bono civil legal services.
