Two litigation practices at Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP have received top ranking from Legal 500 among all U.S. law firms that "demonstrate frequent success before the Supreme Court." The Supreme Court & Appellate and Tax Controversy & Transfer Pricing practices are recognized for their skill, performance, talent, range of experience and unparalleled knowledge of how to deal with the federal appellate courts. "The firm's impressive credentials extend beyond pure courtroom skills, and a broad range of attributes makes the firm a premier operator," noted the commentary in the recently released Volume 3 of the Legal 500 U.S. In addition, the firm's Antitrust, Environment and Securities Litigation practices were also recognized.

The Supreme Court & Appellate Practice Group is ranked as the leading appellate practice in the United States. It is the oldest and largest Supreme Court & Appellate practice in the country, and offers "genuine national coverage" with 26 partners, four counsel, 30 associates and three academic affiliates. "It is this depth of bench compared to its rivals that marks it out as a rock-solid top-tier player," according to Legal 500. Frequent appearances by the firm's attorneys before the Supreme Court are noted, with a total of 196 cases argued there including nine in the three most recent terms, plus hundreds more in appellate courts across the country. Client satisfaction is described as extremely high; one client is quoted that Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw is "a go-to firm for any appellate work." Others praise the firm's thorough legal research, excellent analysis, crisp and clear writing and briefs that rarely need extensive editing.

The firm's Tax Controversy & Transfer Pricing practice also received top ranking for its team of 35 lawyers recognized for their expertise and outstanding performance on cases involving such issues as cross-border transfer pricing, economic substance issues and the tax treatment of tangible and intangible assets in acquisitions. Legal 500 describes the firm's "dedicated team peopled by trial lawyers and litigators who spend all of their time on tax matters" and notes they have collectively litigated more than 100 tax cases. Clients are quoted as extremely pleased with the competence and thorough nature of the work as well as the "excellent job of representing clients' interests."

"These rankings are proof of our endless dedication to client service," said James D. Holzhauer, Chairman of Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw. "They also demonstrate the skill and expertise of the highly-talented professionals within these practices as well as our continued leadership among global law firms."

Legal 500 also recognized Antitrust, "a truly outstanding litigation practice" with "effective and professional litigators" praised by clients for delivering prompt and responsive service. The firm is called a "significant player in the market." The Environmental Practice is described by Legal 500 as "a powerhouse in the Midwest" with a solid base of clients, particularly related to disaster-recovery work. According to one client, "This firm is unparalleled in its ability to formulate solid but creative legal strategies." The Securities Litigation Practice also gained recognition, with client comments ranging from "outstanding, the very best at what they do" to "work was first-rate." The practice is noted for its "significant advice to clients" including both issuers and underwriters.

Legal 500, the world's largest legal referral guide, relies on an extensive research process including thousands of interviews with lawyers and clients.

Luce Forward Attorney Micah Parzen to Speak a International Law and Mental Health Congress in Italy
Micah D. Parzen, a labor and employment attorney in the San Diego office of Luce Forward has been invited to organize and moderate a panel discussion on employment-related lawsuits at the 30th International Congress on Law and Mental Health being held June 25-30 in Padua, Italy.

Parzen, who holds a doctorate in medical anthropology, will lead a panel titled, “The Cultural Psychology of Workplace Litigiousness.” The panel, assembled by Parzen, includes scholars from around the world and will cover topics relating to the psychological implications of legal issues in the workplace.
“I’m particularly excited about this panel,” said Parzen, “because it brings together an extraordinary group of individuals, all of whom have unique expertise and insight with respect to a single, critical research question: What drives employees to file administrative claims and lawsuits against their employers?”

As part of the panel, Parzen will speak about the significant psycho-cultural themes that emerge through “litigation narratives,” the first-hand stories that individuals explicitly and implicitly tell about themselves, their employers, and the nature of workplace relations by and through their pursuit of employment-related administrative claims and lawsuits.

“We are proud to have Micah recognized as a leading resource in legal matters related to employment in the workforce,” said Robert J. Bell, Luce Forward’s Managing Partner. “His twofold expertise in anthropology and law lends an extraordinarily unique perspective to his practice and contributes greatly to our firm in a variety of ways.”

As an attorney in Luce Forward’s Labor and Employment Practice Group, Parzen provides counsel to employers on all aspects of the employment relationship, including wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment, retaliation, wage and hour issues, prevailing wage laws, and OSHA-related matters. He is also called upon regularly to provide trainings on how to prevent unlawful harassment and discrimination in the workplace. His background as an anthropologist enables him to approach workplace conflict as a microcosm of cultural conflict, which, once identified as such, can be prevented or resolved through effective communication strategies.

“Many employers forget that cultural difference is all around us, under our noses, and everywhere we look. This includes the workplace where a company’s policies, procedures, and management style cultivate and encourage certain modes of interaction over others,” said Parzen. “Recognizing this fact is a critical first step in understanding and preventing employment-related claims.”

Parzen serves as the President of the board of directors of ElderHelp of San Diego, a social services agency dedicated to helping low-income seniors stay in their homes. He is also a member of the board of advisors of Un Mundo, a nonprofit international organization focused on development within marginalized Honduran communities. He is also a member and key contributor to the San Diego Employer's Advisory Council.
