Italian IP expert Roberto Valenti joins DLA Piper
DLA Piper is delighted to announce the appointment of leading Italian IP expert, Roberto Valenti as a partner in its Technology, Media and Commercial Group ("TMC"). Roberto joins DLA Piper on 1 July 2007 and will be based in Milan. He will lead the IP practice and work closely with TMC location head, Giangiacomo Olivi.

Roberto founded the IP boutique LGV Avvocati in 2003, after spending nine years in the leading Italian law firm, Trevisan & Cuonzo. Roberto has a wide IP practice which includes registered and unregistered trade marks, copyright and new technologies, industrial property, advertising, e-commerce, privacy and security information and civil law.

Roberto Valenti lectures in Industrial Property at the University of Pavia and in Civil Procedure at the University of Urbino.

The Italian TMC practice will benefit from Roberto's arrival and will be able to expand further in a booming sector, building new synergies within DLA Piper in Italy and abroad.

Federico Sutti, Managing Partner of DLA Piper in Italy said: "DLA Piper is able to complete its offer in the TMC sector with the appointment of a professional with great experience and competence in the IP sector and related litigation".

Roberto Valenti is 39. He holds a JD (1994) and a PhD in IP (2000) from the University of Pavia.

Miller Canfield Attorney Elected Chairman of City of Bloomfield Hills Zoning Board of Appeals
The law firm of Miller Canfield announces that Michael P. Coakley, a principal and commercial litigator in the Detroit office, has been elected to a one-year term as chairman of the Zoning Board of Appeals for the city of Bloomfield Hills.

At Miller Canfield, Coakley practices commercial litigation including securities, antitrust, unfair competition, copyright, trademarks, trade names, trade secrets, franchises, commercial transactions, banks and banking, fraud, closely held corporations, insurance and defamation.

He is a member of the American Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan, Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, Federal Bar Association, Oakland County Bar Association, and the American Arbitration Association, of which he is a member of the Advisory Council for the Midwest for arbitration of large, complex cases. He is an arbitrator for the New York Stock Exchange, Inc., the National Association of Securities Dealers and the Chicago Board Options Exchange, and mediates for the Wayne County Circuit Court and the Oakland County Circuit and District Courts.

He has been a member of the board of directors of the Old Newsboys’ Goodfellows for over 10 years.

He received his law degree from the University of Michigan Law School and his B.A. from Richard Stockton State College.

He resides in Bloomfield Hills, Mich.

Melvin White to be Sworn in as the 36th President of the D.C. Bar
Melvin White, a partner in McDermott Will & Emery’s Trial Department, will be sworn in as the 36th President of the District of Columbia Bar. The swearing in will take place at the Bar’s annual meeting and awards dinner to be held at the Hyatt Regency Washington on Capitol Hill.

Mr. White has an extensive history of voluntary service to the D.C. Bar, the community and the legal profession. He is a two-term member of the D.C. Bar's Board of Governors (2000–2006), and he serves on the Executive Committee with prior service on the Budget and Finance Committees.

"As president, my focus will be to continue our strong tradition of community service, to safeguard the proper professional interest of the members of the Bar, to highlight and enhance service to our members, and to aid our courts in carrying out and improving the administration of justice,” commented Mr. White. “My priorities range from fostering greater inclusion in the D.C. Bar with respect to its programs and services and in the profession, to facilitating more partnerships between D.C. Bar members and local pro bono service providers, to initiatives focusing on the mentoring and retention of junior attorneys.”

A graduate of Morehouse College and the University of Virginia School of Law, Mr. White was a law clerk for the Honorable G. Thomas Eisele, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Arkansas. He is an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

Mr. White focuses his practice on complex commercial litigation and dispute resolution. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the National Conference of Bar Presidents, the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation, the National Bar Association, the Women’s Bar Association of the District of Columbia, GAYLAW, the Washington Bar Association, and the Edward Bennett Williams Inn of Court, an organization of judges, attorneys and prosecutors dedicated to fostering civility and higher learning in all areas of white-collar criminal law.

Additionally, he is the director and co-chair of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs, and is a director at the Dance Institute of Washington. He has served as the National and Eastern Region Internal Fundraising Chair, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial Foundation from 1998 to 2001, and was the President of the Mu Lambda Chapter, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. from 1996 to 1998.

With more than 85,000 members, the D.C. Bar is the second largest state bar in the nation and has more than 50,000 District of Columbia members practicing law in the Metro area. Created by the District of Columbia Court of Appeals in 1972, the D.C. Bar aids the courts in carrying out and improving the administration of justice and works to foster and maintain integrity, learning and competence in public service along with high standards of professional conduct among its attorney members.

Two Jones Walker Miami Attorneys Selected to Appear in Florida Super Lawyers
Jones, Walker, Waechter, Poitevent, Carrère & Denègre, L.L.P. is pleased to announce that partner Thomas F. Morante and special counsel Yvonne G. Grassie have been selected to appear in the 2007 edition of Florida Super Lawyers. Only five percent of Florida attorneys are included in the publication, which will be seen by more than 160,000 readers in The Miami Herald and Florida Super Lawyers magazine.

Mr. Morante is head of Jones Walker’s Washington, D.C., and Miami offices, and he serves as co-chair of the firm’s Insurance, Banking & Financial Services Industry Group as well as its International Practice. His practice focuses on international financial services matters, with emphasis on finance, trade, securities, and insurance law. Mr. Morante was also named to Florida Super Lawyers in 2006. Project and International Finance Partner Returns to Hogan & Hartson in Washington, D.C.
Hogan & Hartson LLP announced today that Keith Larson has rejoined the firm as a partner in the project and international finance practice group in the Washington, D.C. office.

Larson returns to Hogan & Hartson after serving as in-house legal counsel to Royal Dutch Shell in the Netherlands, where he focused on power and LNG infrastructure development as well as strategic acquisition and divestment transactions in Shell’s Gas & Power business. Larson was previously with Hogan & Hartson from 2000 to 2004 and was elected a partner in 2004. He worked in the project and international finance practice, with a special interest in commercial debt finance and security arrangements.

“We are fortunate to have Keith back at Hogan & Hartson,” said Bob Pender, Practice Group Director for the project and international finance group. “His experience in international large scale infrastructure deals at Shell, combined with his stature in the industry, will add depth to our group of commercial debt and finance lawyers.”

“I am delighted to rejoin my colleagues at Hogan & Hartson and to help grow the firm’s project and international finance practice,” said Larson.

Larson received his law degree from Syracuse University College of Law. He also earned a master’s degree in international relations from Syracuse University (Maxwell School). Larson is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, New York, and New Jersey.

Northern Virginia Office Receives Top Rankings in 2007 Edition of Chambers USA
The Northern Virginia office of Hogan & Hartson LLP received high rankings in four different practice areas in the 2007 edition of Chambers USA. The office also had six attorneys honored as “Leaders in Their Fields.”

The corporate/M&A practice was the only corporate/M&A practice ranked in the top tier in Northern Virginia. Hogan & Hartson partners Richard Becker, Richard Horan, Brian Lynch, and Richard Parrino all received recognition as leading individuals in the practice area. According to the guide, "With nine partners and a further 15 or more lawyers primarily engaged in corporate, securities and M&A practice at the McLean office, it occupies a commanding position in this market. ‘Yes, they are the leaders; it is an outstanding firm,’ admitted a prominent peer."

The intellectual property practice was also highly-ranked in Northern Virginia, with partner Philip Porter recognized as a leading individual. Chambers USA stated, "The team is highly regarded by peers who agree: ‘Historically, it is a major player.’ The team benefits from the international nature of the firm as it acts for clients in trademark and patent prosecution globally."

The labor and employment practice was recognized among the best in Northern Virginia, with partner William Flanagan named a leading individual. According to the guide, “With a full-service practice, senior partner William Flanagan is a deeply knowledgeable litigator with 20 years’ experience in the field.”

The litigation group was also highlighted for its general commercial litigation capabilities and, according to Chambers USA, “The 14-lawyer litigation group at this international firm has peers declaring: ‘It is an outstanding firm with high-caliber lawyers.’”

As a whole, Hogan & Hartson saw 62 practice areas and 103 Lawyers earn top rankings in the 2007 edition of Chambers USA.

Chambers USA is an annual guide ranking attorneys and law firms based on in-depth interviews with attorneys, clients, and corporate counsel in the United States.
