DLA Piper's Chicago office honored with prestigious pro bono award
DLA Piper US LLP announced today that the Chicago office has been honored with two prestigious pro bono awards. The Illinois State Bar Association (ISBA) has selected the firm to receive its John C. McAndrews Pro Bono Service Award, and the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Inc. has named Chicago attorney Marianne Raimondi the Outstanding Young Lawyer of 2007.

“The attorneys in Chicago have shown tremendous dedication to pro bono over the past several years, and I am so proud that Marianne and the rest of the office are being honored for their hard work,” said Anne Geraghty, pro bono manager for DLA Piper’s Chicago office. “These awards are testament to the fact that our attorneys are truly making a difference in the communities in which they live and work.”

The ISBA’s John C. McAndrews Pro Bono Service Award recognizes the Chicago office’s meritorious effort in delivering pro bono legal services. The firm also won this prestigious honor in 2005. This year the office is being recognized for its large-scale, long-term, innovative pro bono work, particularly the Juvenile Justice signature project.

In partnership with Northwestern University’s Bluhm Legal Clinic, attorneys who participate in the signature project provide representation to individual children ensnared in the Cook County Juvenile Court system. The office is also conducting a policy study on how best to ensure that children who are released from detention are successfully reintegrated back into the Chicago Public School system. Since the project began in 2005, the office has represented more than 70 children in juvenile court involving over 90 cases.

The firm was presented with the McAndrews Award Friday, June 22, at the ISBA Annual Meeting.

“We are proud that the Chicago office has once again been recognized for both its collective and individual pro bono contributions,” said Louis Cohen, managing partner for the firm’s Chicago office. “More importantly, we look forward to the continued growth and commitment of our pro bono platform here in Chicago.”

Marianne Raimondi, an associate in the firm’s Real Estate practice, was chosen as the Outstanding Young Lawyer of 2007 by the Chicago Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, Inc. for her contributions to the Choose to Own Program.

The Choose to Own Program enables Chicago residents to use public subsidies to purchase their first homes. Raimondi has helped several of these first-time homebuyers navigate the closing process. She also helped write the Lawyers’ Committee Manual for the Choose to Own Program, and in fall 2006 she conducted a city-wide training program for attorneys involved in Choose to Own.

The Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law is the pro bono consortium of Chicago’s largest law firms. It was created in 1969 to provide quality legal counsel to those clients whose civil rights cases and projects would benefit the community at large. The Lawyers Committee mission is to promote and protect civil rights, particularly the civil rights of poor, minority and disadvantaged people, and to facilitate their participation in the social, economic and political systems of our nation.

Raimondi will be honored at the Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law’s annual luncheon July 11.

Growing Pro Bono Commitment
In 2006, the Chicago office of DLA Piper contributed 4,296 hours to the firm’s Juvenile Justice Project and a total of 24,487 hours of pro bono service in the community. This total number of pro bono hours doubles the amount of hours logged by the Chicago office in 2004.

Across the US, DLA Piper logged more than 109,000 pro bono hours in 2006, a 30 percent increase over 2005. The percentage of the firm’s lawyers who worked 20 hours or more rose to exceed 85 percent; in 2005, 63 percent gave 20 hours or more to pro bono work.
