Women Attorneys Give Career Advice to Attorneys and Summer Associates
Jenner & Block Associate Allison A. Sapsford advised over 75 summer associates and attorneys on how to have a successful career at a law firm during a June 20 luncheon discussion sponsored by the Chicago Bar Association Alliance for Women’s Call to Action initiative.

In addition to Ms. Sapsford, Karen Layng of Vedder Price and Denise Castillo spoke on the panel. Julie LaEace of Kirkland & Ellis moderated the discussion.

The panelists offered advice on how to make a good impression at a law firm including tips such as always dressing professionally, being respectful to all employees of the firm, and offering to work on projects without being asked.

They also discussed the networking opportunities available at firm sponsored functions. “Always keep an organized schedule so that it is possible to always get your work done while still being able to attend social functions which are an important part of networking within a firm,” Ms. Sapsford said.

In addition, all of the panelists encouraged the attendees to get involved in their firm’s diversity committees or women’s affinity group, for further networking opportunities and to help encourage the advancement of women attorneys in the legal profession. They also suggested joining local and national Bar groups.

The Call to Action initiative was started in 2004 by Jenner & Block Partner E. Lynn Grayson and Jane DiRenzo Pigott of R3 Group LLC with the goal to increase the number of women in leadership positions within the legal industry. The initiative delegates that a firm signs a pledge that entails the following goals:

* To increase the percent of its women partners by 3 percentage points from its 2004 levels by December 31, 2007.

* To have women represented on every firm committee in the same proportion as the number of women partners at the firm by December 31, 2007.

* To increase the number of women practice group leaders at the firm by December 31, 2007.

* To review its flexible hours policy and its use in order to ensure that alternative schedules are an equitable and viable option by December 31, 2007.

* To materially improve any disparity in the rates in which men and women are retained, promoted, and laterally recruited at the firm by December 31, 2007.

Jenner & Block is one of the original law firm signatories to the Call to Action’s goals promoting true gender diversity in the legal profession. Many Chicago, New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles firms have also signed the pledge.
