Shari Shapiro Makes Two Appearances This Week on CN8’s “Your Morning” to Discuss Recent Supreme Court Decisions
Shari Shapiro, an associate in both the Litigation and Environmental departments of Obermayer Rebmann Maxwell & Hippel LLP, recently appeared twice this week on CN8 - The Comcast Network’s program, “Your Morning” to discuss recent Supreme Court decisions. The three hour program, hosted by Greg Coy, airs weekdays at 7 a.m.

On Tuesday, June 26, 2007, Shapiro discussed the June 25, 2007 Supreme Court decisions – Morse v. Frederick and FEC v. WRTL. In Morse v. Fredrick, a student was suspended for displaying a banner reading "Bong Hits 4 Jesus" at a school function. The Court decided that drug-promoting speech by students could be restricted by the government.

The FEC v. WRTL case concerned the application of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act (BCRA). BCRA prohibits corporations and unions from running sham issue advertisements directly prior to an election. The Court held that unless the issue advertisement could have no other meaning than directing the viewer to vote for a particular candidate, the issue advertisements could not be restricted.

On Friday, June 29, 2007, Shapiro will discuss the June 28, 2007 decisions, Parents Involved v. Seattle School District (05-908) and Meredith v. Jefferson County Board of Education (05-915) which address the use of race as a factor in admissions decisions in public schools, and Panetti v. Quarterman which addresses the execution of the mentally ill.

Shapiro spear-heads the development of Obermayer’s Green Building initiative and is currently pursuing LEED certification. She is also the Co-Chair of the ABA State and Local Government Section Subcommittee on Land Use/Environmental Law.

She recently coordinated a seminar entitled “Getting Green Done…Right,” exploring the nuts and bolts of environmentally sustainable and economically viable development projects. Her presentation focused on “Local Regulation of Green Building Projects.”

Shapiro earned her Juris Doctorate degree from the University of Pennsylvania where she received the Milton C. Sharp Award for Best Grades/Best Research in Urban Renewal or Land Use Planning. While attending the University of Pennsylvania, she obtained a Certificate in Business and Public Policy from the Wharton School of Business. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Development Studies and Modern British History from Brown University. She is admitted to practice in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. She is a member of the Delaware Valley Environmental Inn of Court Society for Women Environmental Professionals

Her publications include: “Green Projects Take Patience,” Philadelphia Business Journal, June 22, 2007; “The Role for Attorneys In the Practice of Building Green,” Special to the Legal Intelligencer, June 14, 2007; ABA Environmental, Energy and Resources Year in Review, 2005, 2006; and “The Effectiveness of Pennsylvania’s Act 2: Are Good Mechanics Enough?” Temple Journal of Science, Technology and Environmental Law, Fall 2005.

Dykema Ranked Top Corporate Law Firm
Corporate Board Member Magazine recently released its seventh annual list of the best corporate law firms in America. Corporate Board Directors surveyed named Dykema one of the best law firms in Detroit for 2007. Respondents answered one question that asked which Detroit law firm they would most likely select to aid their companies on a broad range of corporate legal issues. "We are extremely proud to be chosen again this year, given that these ratings are made by the people ultimately responsible for hiring corporate law firms, a fact that makes this honor unique," said Rex E. Schlaybaugh, Jr., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Dykema.

Corporate Board Member’s annual study identifies the top 20 national corporate law firms and the top five corporate law firms in 25 major U.S. cities, according to directors serving on boards of publicly traded companies listed with the NASDAQ Stock Market, New York Stock Exchange, or American Stock Exchange. The complete national and metropolitan rankings appear in the July/August issue of Corporate Board Member and can be accessed online at www.boardmember.com/issues/current

About the Survey
Corporate Board Member surveyed directors serving on boards of publicly traded companies listed with the NASDAQ, New York, or American Stock Exchanges. The directors were divided into groups based on the location of their companies within metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs). Directors in each of the 25 MSAs featured received a questionnaire specific to their location that included a list of 20 local firms and two write-in options. To be included in the list, each firm had to practice business, corporate, or commercial law and had to be one of the 20 largest firms in its area by number of attorneys. Corporate Board Member compiled the lists of local law firms using Martindale-Hubbell's Law Directory. Respondents were asked to select the five local law firms, from the list provided or as a write-in, they would most likely select to aid their companies on a broad range of corporate legal issues. The top five law firms in each MSA are listed in the magazine based on the number of votes received.
