Hunton & Williams Lawyer Elected to Executive Board of the Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. Bar Association
Hunton & Williams LLP today proudly announces that Jennifer D. Ellis was elected to serve a one-year term as Executive Board Secretary of the Wilkie D. Ferguson Jr. Bar Association (formerly the Black Lawyers Association). Based in the firm’s 57 lawyer Miami office, Ellis is a member of the firm’s labor and employment law practice.

"We are proud that Jennifer is continuing the Hunton & Williams tradition of activism in the legal community," said Marty Steinberg, managing partner of the Miami office of Hunton & Williams. "Her leadership abilities and devotion to mentoring fully complement the Bar Association's commitment to equal access, opportunity and justice in the legal system.”

Ellis, who joined Hunton & Williams in 2005, said, "I am humbled and excited to have been elected to this key position by my peers. I look forward to aiding with the continued success of this dynamic organization."

A graduate of Northwestern University, Ellis earned her law degree cum laude from the University of Miami. While in law school, she was granted the Vincent P. McGhee Memorial Scholarship from the Wilkie D. Ferguson, Jr. Bar Association and the Young Lawyers Division Scholarship from the of the Florida Bar. Active in the community, Ellis is also a member of the Florida State Bar, American Bar Association, and the Dade County Bar Association, where she participates in the eMentoring Program of the Young Lawyers Section.

Saudi Telecom Company buys Malaysian telecoms stake for $3.05bn
Saudi Telecom Company (STC), Saudi Arabia's national telecommunications company, announced today it has agreed to buy a 25 per cent stake in Maxis Communications Bhd, the leading Malaysian telecoms operator with a presence in India and Indonesia, plus a 51 per cent stake in Maxis' Indonesian operation, NTS. The entire deal is worth $3.05bn and marks STC's first international investment. International law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer advised STC on this transaction.

The Freshfields team was led by corporate partner Bruce Embley (Dubai) with intellectual property/information technology partners Connie Carnabucci (Hong Kong) and Natasha Good (London) and finance partner Andrew Petry (London), with assistance in Dubai from Gerald Steinke, Walid Hegazy, Sarah Gingrich and Miriam Dorn.

Bruce Embley comments: 'We are delighted to have been working with STC on this very important transaction which will expand their international footprint into Malaysia, India and Indonesia.'

Freshfields appoints senior manager from Dubai Financial Services Authority
Leading international law firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer announced today that Aryan Schoorl has joined the financial services practice of its Dubai office as a senior associate. Aryan was previously a senior manager at the Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA), where his responsibilities included supervision of the Dubai International Financial Exchange (DIFX), advising on the application for the Dubai Mercantile Exchange, the derivatives exchange which recently commenced operations and advising on capital markets matters.

Prior to the DFSA, Aryan was a member of the markets team at the Dutch financial services regulator AFM (Autoriteit Financiële Markten), where his responsibilities included the supervision of Euronext, the European cross border exchange. Prior to that, Aryan was with Dutch law firm, CMS Derks Star Busmann in their international banking and financial services practice.

Commenting on the appointment, Bruce Embley, partner said, 'I am very pleased that Aryan will be joining our team in Dubai. His excellent regulatory experience means that he will make an invaluable contribution to the growth and development of our financial services team in the Middle East.'

Hanley M. Gurwin Elected to National Board of Governors, American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers
Family and matrimonial law expert Hanley M. Gurwin, of counsel to Dickinson Wright PLLC, has been elected to the National Board of Governors of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

The American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers was founded in 1962 to encourage the study, improve the practice, elevate the standards and advance the cause of matrimonial law, to the end that the welfare of the family and society be protected. There are currently almost 1600 Fellows in 50 states.

Gurwin is a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Family Law section of the State Bar of Michigan, a member of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, and one of only four Michigan lawyers who are Diplomates of the American College of Family Trial Lawyers. He is also a Life Member of the American Bar Foundation and the Michigan State Bar Foundation. He has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America every year since its first edition in 1983.

He holds B.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Michigan.
