Jones Day's Antitrust & Competition Law Practice received #1 rankings nationally and in the District of Columbia in the 2007 edition of the Chambers USA Guide to America's Leading Lawyers for Business. Chambers' 2007 USA rankings, released this month, also recognize the Firm's Antitrust practice in California, Georgia, and Ohio.

The following Jones Day Antitrust & Competition Law lawyers are listed as leading lawyers in the 2007 Chambers USA Guide:

Robert H. Rawson, Jr. (Cleveland)
Joe Sims (Washington)
Toby G. Singer (Washington)

With regard to the Firm's National Antitrust practice, Chambers had the following commentary:

"Jones Day has long been focused on the national level, and it has 'excellent resources and a very large team' in the antitrust arena. Its size is an undoubted strength, as is the way it operates as a networked system of offices throughout the country and beyond. Its US antitrust strengths are concentrated in Washington, DC, Los Angeles and Atlanta, while its Brussels office provides an excellent European platform. This global reach allows the firm to cover the biggest deals. The firm is built on the twin pillars of transactional and litigation work, and the antitrust team enjoys the support of experienced trial and appellate lawyers all across the USA. The key to the network’s strength is excellent leadership. Many sources credit Joe Sims in Washington, DC with creating the template for the firm’s wider success."

The qualities on which Chambers' rankings are assessed include technical legal ability, professional conduct, client service, commercial astuteness, diligence, commitment, and other qualities most valued by clients. For the current USA directory, over 14,000 interviews with in-house and outside counsel were conducted over a period of six months.

Advice on Entering the American Market
Michael Leeds, the administrative partner of Blank Rome’s Florida office, was profiled in the Swedish-American Chambers of Commerce’s publication eCurrents. The profile focused on Mr. Leeds’ representation of Swedish Safegate International AB, owned by Lebanese businessman Salah Osseiran.

“A significant part of my day-to-day business is assisting foreign clients doing business in the U.S.,” explained Mr. Leeds, who visits Sweden on a quarterly basis. “I have represented Mr. Osseiran since 1984.” With headquarters in Malmö, Safegate makes guidance and docking systems designed to safely increase the frequency of aircraft arrivals and departures. “We can help companies to negotiate anywhere in the world. English is the language used in most international negotiations. It is an advantage to have a native-speaking negotiator.” Mr. Leeds has also successfully negotiated on behalf of Safegate in Hong Kong and Japan.

Unlike in many other countries, in the United States, airport gates are often owned by the airlines instead of the airport itself. So in the U.S., Safegate faced an entirely new customer and had to develop a new business case. In spite of these challenges, Safegate has sold a number of docking systems to airports in Seattle and New York’s JFK. How did they achieve this? “Enormous perseverance, great products and that the market had the opportunity to develop,” said Mr. Leeds.

Michael Leeds has advice for Swedish companies that want to enter the American market: “You have to have a terrific product and terrific people. But that is not enough. The ownership has to understand that this is a large and complex market. You need to have patience and support the company. This is not a market where it is likely that you will get rich quick!”

“You Will Not Get Rich Quick—But Perhaps If You Are Persistent” by Elisabeth Precht appeared in the June 2007 issue of eCurrents, published by the Swedish-American Chambers of Commerce USA.
