Senniger Powers' Partner Mike Godar Tells St. Louis Business Journal "How to Choose an IP Attorney"
Senniger Powers' Partner Mike Godar recently spoke with Ambika Behal of the St. Louis Business Journal about the need to carefully select an intellectual property attorney. The article, titled "What a Great Idea! IP Lawyers Can Protect Your Rights" was published on June 29, 2007.

"One of the most valuable assets a company owns is its intellectual property," Godar said in the article. Choosing the right attorney can help to ensure the survival of a product, name or original work. Godar also touched on the need for an attorney with the appropriate experience and the risk inventors run when they attempt to write their own patent application.

Greg Barker Joins Porter & Hedges Energy Group
Porter & Hedges announced today that Greg Barker has joined the firm as a partner in the Energy and Real Estate Practice Groups. He joins the firm from the Houston office of Fulbright & Jaworski where he was a partner in the Energy and Real Property Practice.

Mr. Barker brings with him a national practice that focuses on the legal representation of clients in the development, construction and financing of electric power generating facilities, other energy related assets and other real estate assets. In addition, he has experience with LNG facilities gas processing facilities, energy pipeline facilities and in the acquisition, disposition and development of other real estate assets, including the structuring of partnerships and other entities to own and operate such facilities. Greg has also represented project lenders and project developers, and has extensive knowledge in the areas of negotiation and preparation of all the agreements required in the development and financing of domestic and international energy producing facilities and all other real property assets.

“Greg's extensive experience will enhance the Energy Group,” said firm chairman, Bill Porter. “He will be a great additional resource for our clients and we are very pleased he is joining us.”

Mr. Barker received his B.S. from Virginia Tech in Business Management, and his J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School, and was a member of the Vanderbilt Law Review and the Order of the Coif. He is a member of the American Bar Association, the Houston Bar Association and the State Bar of Texas.

Cooley Godward Kronish LLP Named Top IP Firm by IP Law & Business; Ranked #2 for Plaintiff’s Representation
Cooley Godward Kronish LLP announced today it has been ranked the #2 Intellectual Property law firm in the country by IP Law & Business based on its representation of plaintiffs in patent litigation matters. The publication’s annual patent litigation survey ranks IP groups across the county by the volume of their plaintiffs, defense and total patent cases filed.

This is the second significant recognition Cooley's intellectual property practice has earned recently. The Firm also ranked #11 in the country in the IP Law360 survey of top IP litigation firms for 2006. Cooley’s three-fold increase in cases over the prior year was the largest percentage increase from 2005 to 2006 among all ranked firms.

Berman Speaks at Infovest21, NYCLA, and New York City Bar Programs
On May 16, 2007, FKSA partner Scott M. Berman spoke at Infovest21's Morning Investor Seminar titled "Hotel California: Investors Can Get In But Can't Get Out." The seminar, which was held at the Princeton Club in New York City, focused on the recent bankruptcy court decision involving the Bayou hedge fund, which collapsed in 2005. The court held that the fund's trustee could sue investors that redeemed prior to the fund's collapse, unless the redeeming investors could show that they redeemed in good faith.

In May, Mr. Berman was a faculty member of the New York County Lawyers' Association ("NYCLA") CLE Institute program titled "Winning Cases in Federal Court." Mr. Berman spoke about commencing an action in federal court.

On June 7, Mr. Berman spoke at a New York City Bar CLE program titled "Current Issues in D&O Liability & Insurance." Mr. Berman spoke about accessing D&O policy proceeds from the perspective of a plaintiff's attorney. The program was co-sponsored with the Insurance Federation of New York, Inc.

Emanuel C. Welch to Head the Firm's Education and Municipal Law Practice
Welch will run the Firm's Education and Municipal Law Practice. He has served on the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board of Education since November 7, 2001, and he has been President of the Board since April 2003. He also serves as general legal counsel for Bellwood School District 88, Maywood School District 89 and special legal counsel for Community High School District 218. He has also served as legal counsel in Posen-Robbins School District 143 and ½., Hoover-Schrum School District 157, and Niles High School District 219. Welch also serves as litigation counsel in the Town of Cicero and the Village of Melrose Park.

He is a member of the Illinois Council of School Attorneys, and he was the lead attorney in the case of Roxanne Brown v. Bellwood School District 88 (November 2005) in which the Illinois Appellate Court ruled that local school boards have the right to declare vacancies and fill those vacancies. Welch has received the prestigious PLCCA Image Award (June 2006), and he has been recognized by the Village of Hillside (Jan. 2007) for his contributions to Human Rights issues. He also serves as assistant secretary to the Des Plaines Valley Mosquito Abatement Board.
