Pinney Allen Appointed Board Chair of Atlanta Women's Foundation
Alston & Bird is pleased to announce that partner Pinney Allen has been appointed chair of the board of directors of the Atlanta Women’s Foundation. The Atlanta Women’s Foundation focuses on issues affecting women and girls and has awarded more than $8.3 million to non-profit organizations serving women and girls in the 15-county metropolitan area. Ms. Allen has served on the organization’s board since 2003 and prior to that worked extensively with the foundation in a volunteer capacity.

“I am honored to be selected as board chair for Atlanta Women’s Foundation and look forward to working with the board and other members of the foundation to implement the long-term strategic plan we just adopted,” said Ms. Allen. “Specifically, my goals over the next year are to help the organization serve as a driver of social change to achieve significant advancement in self-sufficiency for Atlanta's women, and serve as the thought leader and focus of community philanthropy on issues surrounding women and girls.”

Ms. Allen will work with Atlanta Women’s Foundation on a number of projects, including the release of the “Status of Women Report,” which addresses the status of women in Atlanta’s 15-county area, and the upcoming 11th community-wide annual luncheon, “Numbers Too Big to Ignore,” featuring guest speaker Jamie Lee Curtis.

In commenting on Ms. Allen’s selection, Deborah Richardson, CEO of The Atlanta Women’s Foundation said, “Pinney brings a unique skill set—she understands the importance of women and girls having equal opportunities for success, and her top notch business acumen is ideal for focusing on the outcomes of the work we do.”

Professionally, Ms. Allen is co-chair of Alston & Bird’s tax practices and concentrates her practice on the structuring and effecting of complex business transactions.

Ms. Allen received her J.D. degree and her B.A. degree from Harvard University.

Penelope A. Dixon Selected for Leadership Tampa 2008
Carlton Fields is pleased to announce that Tampa attorney Penelope A. Dixon was recently selected for Leadership Tampa, class of 2008.

A leadership program of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Tampa educates its participants on issues, opportunities, and challenges throughout Hillsborough County. Members of Leadership Tampa have demonstrated concern for the community and volunteer their time to service organizations. The selection process for Leadership Tampa is intensive as class size is limited to approximately 55 participants each year. Topics covered during the program include health sciences, education, law enforcement, cultural affairs, redevelopment, government, and other important community issues.

Dixon is a member of the firm’s Products and Toxic Tort Liability, Business Litigation and Trade Regulation, Labor and Employment, and Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Practice Groups. She has experience in areas of products liability, pharmaceutical and medical device mass tort litigation, commercial litigation, and labor and employment law. Dixon received her J.D., from Mercer University Walter F. George College of Law in 2000 and her B.A., in Political Science, summa cum laude, from Alcorn State University in 1997.

Baker & McKenzie Advises Ma'aden on $1.5 Billion Saudi Mining and Minerals Plant Project
Baker & McKenzie has advised the Saudi Arabian Mining Co. (Ma'aden) on its development of the Ma'aden Phosphate Project in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including the signing of engineering, procurement and construction contracts with three international contractor groups for the development of process plants, with a capital cost of over US$1.5 billion.

The project comprises a phosphate mine at Al Jalamid in northwest Saudi Arabia, together with fertilizer production facilities at Ras Az Zawr on the Arabian Gulf shoreline and other infrastructure. The fertilizer production facilities to be constructed under the contracts include a sulphuric acid plant, phosphoric acid plant and diammonium phosphate (DAP) plant, all on a world scale.

Mike Webster, Projects Partner at Baker & McKenzie, said: ''Signing the contracts for these three major plants, effectively the largest in the world of their types, is a significant milestone in the development of the Saudi mining and minerals sector, and the culmination of a considerable amount of planning and hard work by Ma'aden, its advisers and the contractors. ''

The Baker & McKenzie team was led by Mike Webster, and included Projects associate Russell Garner in London, and Riyadh Partner George Sayen.

Bond Attorney Jeffrey Blumenfeld Joins WolfBlock as Chair of Public Finance Practice
WolfBlock is pleased to announce that Jeffrey Blumenfeld has joined the firm as a partner in the Corporate and Securities Practice Group and will serve as chair of WolfBlock’s Public Finance Practice.

Blumenfeld, who will be resident in the firm’s Philadelphia office, has more than 20 years of experience in the issuance of debt by public entities and has served as bond counsel, underwriters' counsel and counsel to conduit borrowers, credit enhancers and trustees in a broad range of transactions, including general governmental, utility, education, housing, health care, 501(c)(3), industrial development and redevelopment financings, securitization of tax liens and derivatives.

"WolfBlock has long had a significant presence in the field of municipal finance," noted WolfBlock Chairman Mark L. Alderman. "Jeff's extensive experience fortifies our public finance practice and will enhance our sustained capability to service the needs of our clients."

Blumenfeld is admitted to practice in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. He is a member of the board of directors and a past president of the Pennsylvania Association of Bond Lawyers and a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers. He is also a member of the bar associations of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Camden County and Philadelphia. In addition, Blumenfeld is vice president of the board of trustees of the Philadelphia Arts in Education Partnership, a nonprofit corporation established to promote art in education.

Blumenfeld is a graduate of Rutgers University School of Law – Camden (J.D., 1983) and of Princeton University (A.B., 1976).

A New Partner for the Moscow Office of White & Case
White & Case announced today that Steffen Kaufmann has become a local partner of the Firm's Moscow office.

Steffen advises on mergers and acquisitions, real estate projects and finance transactions related to Russia. With White & Case since 2004, he has represented international and Russian companies on their activity in the natural resources, manufacturing and banking sectors.

"Steffen's work has been integral to the growth of our corporate and real estate practices and the development of our German-speaking client base," said Moscow office executive partner Hugh Verrier. "We are pleased to welcome him to the partnership."

White & Case has promoted five lawyers to partnership in its Moscow office in the past two years. The Moscow office has nearly 80 lawyers, including 11 partners. White & Case was named Russian Law Firm of the Year by the International Financial Law Review in 2005 and by Who's Who Legal in 2006.

Thompson Hine Expands Employee Benefits Practice: Tess J. Ferrera Joins the Washington Office
Tess J. Ferrera has joined the Washington office of the law firm of Thompson Hine LLP as a partner in the ERISA litigation section of the Employee Benefits & Executive Compensation practice group. Ms. Ferrera focuses her practice on counseling and litigating matters involving fiduciary obligations under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA). Prior to joining Thompson Hine, Ms. Ferrera was previously a partner with a local D.C. firm.

Upon joining Thompson Hine, Ms. Ferrera said, “I was attracted to Thompson Hine because of their strong Employee Benefits and ERISA litigation practice and reputation for impeccable client service. I’m happy I can be part of the firm’s growth.”

Ms. Ferrera was recognized as a leading lawyer in Employee Benefits by Chambers & Partners in its 2004, 2005 and 2006 editions.

Before entering private practice, Ms. Ferrera worked for six years as a trial attorney for the Department of Labor in federal courts litigating suspected violations of the ERISA fiduciary and prohibited transaction provisions. She frequently advises clients on a variety of issues pertaining to ERISA fiduciary obligations, including allocation of demutualization proceeds, proxy voting, investment decisions, selection and monitoring of service providers and reasonable fee issues. Ms. Ferrera has an extensive track record advising clients who are under Department of Labor investigations. She is also a litigator with extensive experience managing all facets of ERISA litigation, including writing complaints, motions and briefs; conducting pre-trial discovery; presenting cases for hearings and trials; working with expert witnesses; and negotiating settlements.

Ms. Ferrera is an experienced writer who has authored several pieces, including the fifth edition of Panel Publisher’s ERISA Fiduciary Answer Book and its 2006 supplement. She earned her J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center in 1990 and her B.A. from the George Washington University in 1980. She is admitted to practice in the state of Maryland and the District of Columbia. A native of Cuba, Ms. Ferrera is fluent in Spanish.

Thompson Hine LLP Partner Ginger Mlakar Named Treasurer of Cleveland Bar Association
Ginger F. Mlakar has been named treasurer of the Cleveland Bar Association for the third year in a row. In this role, Mlakar is responsible for overseeing the finances of the organization.

In addition to her duties as treasurer, Mlakar is chair of the Fiscal Policy Committee and former chair of the Estate Planning, Probate and Trust Law Section. She is also a member of the Ohio State Bar Association’s Estate Planning, Trust and Probate Law Section.

Mlakar, a partner in Thompson Hine’s Cleveland office, has experience in estate planning, corporate succession planning, fiduciary litigation and trust and estate administration matters. She received her J.D. and B.S. from The Ohio State University.
