New European Competition Partner in Rome
McDermott Will & Emery – Studio Legale Associato announce the appointment of Veronica Pinotti on 4 July 2007 as a partner in the European Competition group of the international law firm of McDermott Will & Emery. She will lead the competition group in Italy, offering specialist assistance to Italian and international firms, and working closely with our established European competition team. Veronica represents many multinational clients in the insurance and finance industries on a wide range of legal issues relating to competition before the Italian Competition and Market Commission and the European Commission . One of the team’s most recent exploits was to assist two multinationals operating in the sector of medical devices in filing opposition with the European Commission to the merger between Boston Scientific, Guidant and Abbot.

Co-head of the European Competition group, Scott Megregian said, “Veronica has wide ranging international experience having worked with competition groups in Brussels, London and Italy. Her experience in Italian and European competition will be an important addition to our European practice.”

Massimo Trentino, partner-in-charge of the Rome office said, “The appointment of Veronica Pinotti is an important step forward in growing our Italian practice and we are delighted to have her on board."

Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP Advises Berkshire Partners on Investment in Masai Group International
The Munich, Frankfurt, Boston and New York offices of the international law firm Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP advised US private equity investor Berkshire Partners LLC in its investment in Masai Group International. Current shareholders Klaus Heidegger and Hermann Oberschneider have retained a majority stake in the company. The parties agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

Boston-based Berkshire Partners has invested in mid-size private companies for the past 20 years through seven funds with aggregate capital commitments of approximately $6.5 billion.

The Swiss Masai Group International, headquartered in Romanshorn, is the leading global provider of physiological footwear and markets and distributes shoes to over 20 countries under the Masai Barefoot Technology ("MBT") brand.

The German transaction team was led by partners Gerhard Schmidt (Corporate, Frankfurt) and Thomas Schmid (Corporate, Munich) and was supported by partner Tobias Geerling (Tax, Munich) as well as associates Michael Sörgel, Judith Garritzmann and Bernhard Rehbein (all Corporate, Munich), Wolfgang Süss and Jens Gerhardt (both Finance, Munich) as well as Christian Küpker (Tax, Munich) and Martin Buntscheck (Antitrust, Frankfurt).

The US team consisted of partners Joseph Newberg (Tax, Boston) and David Kreisler (Corporate, Boston) as well as associate Jordan Kolar (Tax, New York).

Christoph Heiz, Wolfgang Müller and Daniel Schoch of the law firm Meyer Lustenberger, Zurich, advised Berkshire Partners on questions of Swiss law in this transaction.

Baker & McKenzie, Zurich, acted for Masai Group International with a team led by Martin Furrer and Beat Mathys.

Richard Lafferty Joins Poyner & Spruill LLP in Charlotte Office
Poyner & Spruill LLP is pleased to announce Richard Q. Lafferty has joined the firm as Of Counsel in the Charlotte office. He practices in the area of Financial Services, primarily serving the firm's financial institution clients. For the past 19 years, Richard has worked for the legal department of Bank of America, most recently as Assistant General Counsel.

Seventeen Partners and Five Practice Areas Recognized by Chambers & Partners USA
Morris, Nichols, Arsht & Tunnell LLP has achieved top ranking in Delaware in five practice areas, as determined by the prestigious international publisher Chambers & Partners. Milling Team participates in Rotary Spelling Bee to benefit YMCA of Greater New Orleans Adult Literacy Program…
Milling Benson Woodward participated in the Rotary Spelling Bee at Kingsley House to benefit Adult Literacy Programs for YMCA of Greater New Orleans. YMCA Education Services (YES!) is the largest and oldest non-local education agency adult literacy program in the state. YES! operates out of the New Orleans Public Library and is the only remaining literacy program in the city serving adult learners.

Proceeds from the Spelling Bee will be used to recruit and train volunteer tutors, provide educational materials to students, and meet other operational needs of the YMCA adult literacy program as there remains a pressing need to support efforts to promote literacy in New Orleans as citizens return to the city.

Michael D. Hebert Lead Counsel in Successful Defense of $125 Million Telecommunications Bond Issue
Michael D. Hebert was lead counsel in the successful defense of the City of Lafayette, Louisiana and its issuance of $125 million in utilities revenue bonds to finance a new fiber optics communications project. The case, Naquin v. Lafayette City-Parish Consolidated Government (2007 WL 530009, http://www.lasc.org/opinions/2007/06C2227.opn.pdf ), was recently decided by the Louisiana Supreme Court, and Mr. Hebert argued the case before that court. The case clears the way for the financing of a landmark fiber-to-the-premises project by the City of Lafayette, which seeks to provide telephone, cable/video, and Internet service via fiber optic cables citywide. When constructed, the project will be one of the largest municipally-owned communications projects of its kind in the United States.

Marc S. Raspanti and Kevin E. Raphael co-authored updates to the "Investigations" chapter of the 2007 edition of Alice Gosfield's book, Medicare and Medicaid Fraud and Abuse. The chapter details a Medicare/Medicaid fraud investigation and discusses legal defenses available during an investigation. This is the third consecutive year that Mr. Raspanti and Mr. Raphael have co-authored the updates to the "Investigations" chapter.
