Burr & Forman LLP is pleased to welcome two new partners to the Firm’s Jackson, MS office. Dorsey R. Carson, Jr., and Cheri Turnage Gatlin will practice in the Firm’s construction group. Both Dorsey and Cheri have represented numerous owners, general contractors, subcontractors and sureties within the construction industry. Dorsey is a graduate of Mississippi State College and received his J.D. from the University of Georgia. He is admitted to the Mississippi State Bar as well as the Georgia Bar. Cheri also represents both contractors and sureties in the work-out and resolution of defaults. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Mississippi College and her J.D. from Mississippi School of Law. Cheri is admitted to practice in all Mississippi State and Federal courts.

Attorney, Merrie Winfrey, Admitted to Practice Before United States Supreme Court
Sturgill, Turner, Barker & Moloney, PLLC, is honored to annouce that attorney, Merrie Winfrey, has been admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. Winfrey is a member of the Kentucky Bar Association and admitted to practice before the U. S. District Court, Eastern and Western Districts of Kentucky and the United States Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals. Winfrey is a 2003 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Law. She has been with the firm for four years and practices primarily in the areas of Education Law, Employment and Labor Law, Administrative law, Civil Litigation, and Healthcare Law.

Rogers Towers' Attorney Appointed as Chair of Marital & Family Law Board Certification Committee Jacksonville
The Florida Bar appointed David A. Garfinkel as Chair of the Marital and Family Law Board Certification Committee for the upcoming Bar year, which runs from July 1, 2007 through June 30, 2008. Garfinkel has served on the Family Law Certification Committee for seven years, most recently as the committee’s Vice Chairman. He has also served as a past chairman of the Jacksonville Bar Association Family Law Committee.

A shareholder at Rogers Towers, P.A., Garfinkel practices Marital and Family law, specifically complex property, alimony, child support, custody, and visitation cases. Garfinkel served on the organizational committee for Florida Family Law American Inn of Court, and was the Inn of Court’s 2006 recipient of the Hernandez Professionalism Award, an award given annually to the “Family Lawyer of the Year.” In addition, he was named one of Law & Politics’s “Super Lawyers,” an accolade given to the top 5 percent of lawyers in a respective practice area. Garfinkel was also recognized by the American Research Corporation as a Leading Florida Attorney in the area of Family Law.

Garfinkel earned his J.D. from Sanford University, Cumberland School of Law in 1982. He earned both his B.A. and M.P.A. from the University of Georgia.

Phillips Lytle LLP Partner James D. Donathen Elected To Board Of Directors For Employee Relations Association Of WNY
James D. Donathen, a Partner with Phillips Lytle LLP, a full service law firm with statewide coverage, was recently elected to the Employee Relations Association of WNY board of directors for a one-year term.

At Phillips Lytle, Mr. Donathen concentrates in the area of labor and employment law. He holds a J.D., cum laude, from University of Notre Dame Law School and a B.A., magna cum laude, also from University of Notre Dame. Included in The Best Lawyers in America®, Mr Donathen is a member of the American, New York and Erie County Bar Associations, as well as a member of the Labor and Employment Relations Association of WNY. Patton Boggs LLP congratulates Terry Groff on receiving the 2007 General Commercial (Individual) Award at the inaugural International Law Office.com Global Counsel Awards. Ms. Groff was honored for her work as a General Counsel at BAX Global, a $2.9 billion supply chain and transportation solutions company offering multi-modal logistics management for business-to-business shippers through a global network of nearly 500 offices in 133 countries. The award was presented at a gala dinner held in New York on Thursday, June 28.

“We are so pleased that our friend and client Terry has been honored with this prestigious award. She is truly deserving of this recognition and we know her colleagues at BAX Global are equally proud of this accomplishment,” noted David Farber, partner at Patton Boggs LLP.

BETTINA T. GUEVARA AWARDED “YOUNG LEADER HERO” AWARD
Miles & Stockbridge P.C. is pleased to announce that Bettina T. Guevara was awarded the “Young Leader Hero” Award by the U.S. Hispanic Youth Entrepreneur Education Organization (“USHYEE”).

USHYEE’s Hispanic Hero Award Gala Selection Committee selected Ms. Guevara as the winner of the “Young Leader Hero” category because of her commitment and continued involvement in the Hispanic community.

“Bettina has already accomplished so much, yet we are always amazed by her continued desire to be more involved in the community,” said Randi Lewis, director of diversity and professional development at Miles & Stockbridge. “We are so proud of her.”

USHYEE is a growing national organization committed to providing innovative programs that give Hispanic youth the tools they need to succeed. They believe that creative thinking is a necessity in helping youth to achieve.

Ms. Guevara will be speaking to high school students about taking steps toward a legal education and the importance of diversity in the legal profession at USHYEE’s Maryland Hispanic Youth Symposium, which will take place at the University of Baltimore from July 19-21, 2007. The Maryland Hispanic Youth Symposium is the only program in the State of Maryland that combines college counseling, mentorship, and career advice in an on-campus setting.

Ms. Guevara is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Law, where she received the 2005 Public Service Award and served as an associate editor of The Business Lawyer.

She also received a volunteer services award from the National Kidney Foundation in 2006 for her pro-bono work and is actively involved in several other local and national organizations. In 2005, Ms. Guevara joined the Board of Directors of the Maryland Hispanic Bar and was one of the youngest persons elected president-elect by the Maryland Hispanic Bar in 2006. In this role, Ms. Guevara spearheaded the launch of the first ever Maryland Hispanic Bar Mentorship Program. Ms. Guevara currently sits on the Board of the Hispanic National Bar as the affiliate representative for the Maryland Hispanic Bar and is a director of the Maryland Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Mary Vasaly Named President-Elect of the Hennepin County Bar Association
Maslon Attorney Mary Vasaly was recently named President-elect of the Hennepin County Bar Association. Previously, Mary served as Secretary (2005-2006) and Treasurer (2006-2007) for the association.
