Washington State Minority and Justice Commission Taps Dorsey Lawyers
The international law firm of Dorsey & Whitney LLP today announced that Alexander Baehr and Carllene Placide have been named to the Washington State Minority and Justice Commission’s Technical Support Group. The Washington Minority and Justice Commission has a 20 year history of working to identify and eradicate all racial, ethnic, and cultural bias in the state court system, and its members mostly consist of state district, superior, appellate and supreme court judges.

The Commission has sponsored research efforts dating back to the late 80’s and early 90’s. The Commission's findings indicated that such problems exist in Washington courts and must continue to be addressed. As new members of the Commission, Baehr and Placide embrace the group’s goal of taking creative steps to identify, prevent and overcome racial and ethnic bias in Washington courts. Baehr and Placide are also partners in Dorsey & Whitney’s Seattle Labor and Employment practice and have been appointed to serve on the Technical Support Group of the Commission through December 31, 2007, subject to renewal for an additional one-year term.

Ms. Placide’s employment law experience includes counseling and litigating cases involving race, gender, age, disability, religious and national origin discrimination, retaliation, wrongful termination, wage and hour violation, safety and health issues and workers compensation and international business immigration matters. Mr. Baehr has extensive trial experience handling complex commercial matters, including employment discrimination, employee mobility, trade secret and antitrust and unfair competition litigation.

Dorsey & Whitney has a rich tradition of encouraging excellent attorneys to pursue their interest in community service, including former United States Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun, former United States Vice President Walter Mondale, former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack, Minnesota Attorney General Warren Spannaus, and former United States Attorneys Bob Bundy (AK) and Zach Carter (NY).

“I am excited about joining Davis Wright Tremaine” said Boundy. “The firm has a well-respected intellectual property law practice and I am looking forward to helping to broaden this dynamic practice not only in the Pacific Northwest but across the country.”

DWT’s intellectual property/patent law group now has over 50 attorneys in eight offices. The addition of Boundy, Hunt and Haindfield, combined with last month’s merger with San Francisco-based boutique patent and trademark firm Parsons Hsue & de Runtz LLP, continues the strategic growth of DWT’s intellectual property/patent group.

“Ross, Philip and Melanie are welcome additions to our firm and reflect DWT’s continued commitment to expanding our capabilities in intellectual property and patent law across our offices,” said Alexandra Nicholson, co-chair of DWT’s intellectual property practice group.

Boundy has engaged in trial practice since 1971 and has represented clients in all aspects of intellectual property litigation, including patent infringement, copyright and trademark disputes and related alternative dispute resolution procedures. He received his J.D. from Lewis & Clark Law School, his MSEE from the University of Wisconsin – Madison and his BSEE, cum laude, from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks. Hunt is licensed to practice in Oregon and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Haindfield is licensed to practice in Washington and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

“Hiring these three great lawyers builds upon Davis Wright Tremaine’s commitment to comprehensive intellectual property services in general and deepens and broadens our patent law prosecution and litigation capabilities,” said Susan Duffy, the partner-in-charge of the firm’s Seattle office.

Selecta is Europe's biggest food vending machine operator. It has operations in 22 European countries, including Britain, generating revenues last year of £476 million and operating profits of £45 million.

"This is a tremendous result for ACP following a keenly contested auction and demonstrates some of the competitive advantages which can be achieved through careful acquisition structuring," said Greg Hammond, a partner in White & Case's Corporate practice in London.

White & Case partners Greg Hammond and Claus Wecker, based in London and Düsseldorf respectively, led the team acting for ACP. They were assisted by counsel Michelle Brady in London, local partners Dr. Heiko Wilde and Dr. Christoph Kuzaj in Düsseldorf and a team of over 15 lawyers from the Firm's offices in London, Düsseldorf and Paris. Eileen J. O’Connor Joins Pillsbury as Partner in Washington, DC O’Connor will lead new Federal Tax Controversy and Tax Policy Team
Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman LLP today announced that Eileen J. O’Connor, Assistant Attorney General for the Tax Division of the United States Department of Justice from July 2001 to June 2007, has joined the firm as a partner in its Washington, DC office. O’Connor will lead Pillsbury’s new firmwide Federal Tax Controversy and Tax Policy Team.

“Lee is one of the most highly respected federal tax attorneys in the country,” said Jeff Vesely, firmwide leader of Pillsbury’s Tax Practice. “Her three decades of experience in federal tax law, ranging from representing clients before the National Office of the Internal Revenue Service to leading the Justice Department’s Tax Division for nearly six years will be a tremendous asset to our clients.”

As head of the Tax Division, O’Connor oversaw the litigation—civil and criminal, trial and appellate—of the Division’s approximately 350 attorneys. Significant litigation during this time included that involving the Internal Revenue Service’s corporate and individual tax shelter enforcement initiatives, its professional firm promoter penalty investigations, and offshore shelter compliance programs, among others. O’Connor instituted a civil-criminal coordination program in the Tax Division, resulting in the government’s obtaining injunctions against the promotion of tax fraud and the preparation of fraudulent returns.

As Assistant Attorney General, O’Connor represented the United States in oral argument before the United States Supreme Court and the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fifth and Federal Circuits, and was a member of the President’s Corporate Fraud Task Force.

“Lee O'Connor was an outstanding head of the Justice Department's Tax Division, an exceedingly popular administrator, and a tireless advocate for her clients, the people of the United States,” said Theodore Olson, former Solicitor General of the United States.

And Mark Everson, who served as Commissioner for Internal Revenue from May 2003-May 2007, says of O’Connor: “I worked with Lee O'Connor for four years, a period of real partnership between the IRS and the Department of Justice. Lee was stalwart in advancing the interests of sound tax administration.”

Early in her career, O’Connor was a corporate tax law specialist with the National Office of the Internal Revenue Service. And for more than 20 years, O’Connor, who is also a CPA, was a national tax consultant with several top national accounting firms. She has taught in the graduate tax law program of Georgetown University School of Law, and was a Distinguished Adjunct Professor at the George Mason University School of Law.

O’Connor says that one of her key goals will be to round out Pillsbury’s already strong tax practice by building a firmwide Federal Tax Controversy and Tax Policy Team. This team will engage the experience and skills of Pillsbury’s tax lawyers, its litigators, members of its public policy practice and other disciplines to ensure each Pillsbury client receives the fullest possible range of tax advice and representation.

“I am delighted to be starting the next chapter of my career at Pillsbury,” said O’Connor. “Pillsbury’s sterling reputation for integrity and professional excellence made joining the firm an easy choice for me.”

Pillsbury’s is one of the leading tax practices in the United States, advising and representing many of the nation’s largest corporations. From planning to transactions to administrative controversy to litigation and beyond, Pillsbury attorneys advise and represent their clients on all aspects of federal, state, and foreign income, excise, property, sales and use and other taxes in connection with mergers and acquisitions, estates and trusts, employee benefits and executive compensation, real estate and investments, and much more. In its 2007 national ranking of Pillsbury’s tax practice, Chambers USA wrote that “clients found this team to be ‘fantastic at representing us in IRS audits and appeals’ and that the ‘lawyers understand where you want to go and get you there.’”

“Over the past six years, Lee has worked hard to defend the integrity of federal tax laws and to advance United States tax policy. Given her outstanding experience as a tax advisor, representative and litigator, and her superior management skills, she was the clear choice to lead our new team,” said Vesely.

O’Connor received her B.S. in Business Administration from Columbus State University and her J.D. from the Columbus School of Law at Catholic University of America.
