Meghan Magruder, a Litigation Lawyer at King & Spalding, Is a Contributing Author To New Book on Insurance Regulations
Meghan H. Magruder, a senior partner in the Atlanta office of King & Spalding, a leading international law firm, is a contributing author of a new book on insurance law. Her chapter on insurance claims and recovery is included in Understanding Insurance Regulations & Coverage published by Aspatore Books (www.aspatore.com) as part of the publisher’s "Inside the Minds" series. The book is available for purchase online from the publisher or amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com.

Magruder, an authority on business litigation, with particular emphasis on insurance coverage, says that clients often believe their insurance carriers have their best interest as a priority, but actually insurers will raise any number of defenses to avoid payment of claims, especially when a claim is complex and expensive.

According to Magruder, the other most common mistakes made by clients that prevent them from successfully resolving a claim are lack of timely notice to the insurer, confusion over the calculation of damages the client is entitled to recover and mishandling the confidentiality of information and the duty of cooperation with the insurer.

Magruder believes the insurance sector is undergoing significant change. She predicts that over the next five years there will be an increase in the number of companies taking on more self-insured retentions, as the cost of insurance rises and companies simply take more risk to cover certain liabilities without insurance. Also on the horizon, she says, are an increasing need for coverage that provides adequate protection for directors and officers and a trend towards mandatory arbitration and international arbitration provisions in policies.

Magruder is a member of King & Spalding’s business litigation and tort and environmental practice groups. She has more than 20 years’ experience handling complex commercial litigation matters. She handles multi-party, class action and multi-jurisdictional litigation and various forms of dispute resolution.

King & Spalding represents policyholder clients in a broad range of general corporate, tax, securities, real estate, reinsurance and litigation matters. Clients ranging from Fortune 100 companies to smaller companies and individuals rely on the firm for its deep understanding of the insurance industry.
