Duane Morris' Chicago Office Signals Growth with New Office Lease
International law firm Duane Morris LLP is pleased to announce that it has signed a 15-year lease for new space in Chicago. The firm office will occupy more than 45,000 square feet on the full 36th and 37th floors of 190 LaSalle Street, located in the heart of the city's business district. The lease will allow the firm to move the office in April 2008.

The firm is leaving its current space in Chicago's AT&T Center at 227 West Monroe Street after eight years and is moving to the larger space in anticipation of continued growth. The Chicago office currently has 43 attorneys, including five new partners added in the last year. The new space will accommodate 72 attorneys in total. Also, the Chicago office has options for additional space for greater expansion to meet its growth objectives.

The new space, in a 40-story tower designed by prominent architects Philip Johnson and John Burgee, features post-modern architecture and is located within a short distance of several Chicago business landmarks, including the Chicago Board of Trade and the Federal Reserve Bank. The firm will join notable tenants Goldman Sachs, Smith Barney, Bain & Company and Lazard Freres & Co.

"This new lease marks a significant milestone for Duane Morris in Chicago," David Yelin, managing partner of the Chicago office and a leader of the firm's Real Estate Practice Group said. "We are very excited to be moving to such a well-positioned building, which will allow us to continue to pursue our growth strategy in Chicago, improve office space efficiency and better serve our clients."

The Chicago office opened in 1999 and provides legal services in such practice areas as corporate, trial, securities and M&A, real estate, business reorganization, employment and labor as well as banking and financial services. Its insurance, construction litigation and healthcare law practices have also expanded during the past year.

Weil Gotshal Obtains Major Victory against AT&T and AT&T Wireless
Weil Gotshal successfully represented a group of former directors and officers of MediaOne Group, a company that was previously acquired by AT&T, against AT&T and AT&T Wireless in a suit stemming from a decision by AT&T Wireless to cancel millions of stock options granted over the years to its employees and the employees of companies acquired by AT&T. Plaintiffs claimed that the decision by AT&T Wireless, which came after it agreed to merge with Cingular in 2004, deprived them of the full economic value of stock options which had been awarded to them as a significant component of their compensation.

Following a week-long bench trial, the Court issued a 57-page decision in the plaintiffs’ favor, awarding plaintiffs the value of their options, $11.3 million, plus prejudgment interest. The decision contains the most comprehensive discussions of stock option valuation of any published opinion and it will be a significant precedent for M&A practitioners who advise clients on the treatment of their employee stock options in merger transactions.

The Weil Gotshal team working on this matter consisted of partner Miranda Schiller and associates Joshua S. Amsel and Stefania Venezia.

Nelson Dong on Credit Scoring and China's Expanding Consumer Culture
Dorsey partner and chair of the firm's Asia practice Nelson Dong commented in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal on the increasing relevance of objective credit scoring in China's expanding consumer economy. With GDP growth rates above 10 percent a year, Chinese banks have started to implement Western banking practices with regard to consumer credit.

"Clearly, objective credit scoring would help a lot," Dong said. "Particularly as China becomes more of a consumer culture and people start purchasing more homes and automobiles, the two largest ticket items that people borrow money for ... it becomes far more important to know whether a borrower can repay a loan.:"
