Miller Canfield Attorney Appointed to ABA Committee
The law firm of Miller Canfield announces that Robert E.L. Wright, an attorney-mediator in the Grand Rapids office, was recently appointed to a one-year term as co-chair of the American Bar Association’s Section of Dispute Resolution Standing Committee on ADR Practice Management, Business, and Skills Development.

Wright is a Harvard-trained facilitative mediator and neutral arbitrator, resolving commercial, construction, divorce and employment disputes. He has over 25 years’ experience in litigation for plaintiffs and defendants with particular emphasis in alternative dispute resolution and commercial litigation, including bankruptcy. He is listed in The Best Lawyers in America 2006 and 2007, as well as Michigan Super Lawyers 2006, for his work as a mediator.

He is a volunteer mediator for the Western Michigan Dispute Resolution Center in Grand Rapids and received its Trail Blazer Award for his leadership role in making peaceful resolution of disputes a possibility for citizens of West Michigan. He was recently appointed to the ADR Oversight Committee of the Kent County Circuit Court and to the Mediation Advisory Board of the Institute of Continuing Legal Education.

Wright received his J.D. from Wayne State University Law School, an M.A. in Psychology from the University of Santa Monica, California, and a B.A., magna cum laude, from Western Michigan University.

He is admitted to all courts in Michigan and Florida and is a member of the Association for Conflict Resolution, National Association for Community Mediation, Dispute Resolution Center of West Michigan (president), Michigan Council for Family and Divorce Mediation, American Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan, Grand Rapids Bar Association and the American Bankruptcy Institute along with numerous civic and charitable organizations.

He resides in Ada, Michigan with his wife, Arlene.

Miller Canfield Lawyer Appointed to Board of Directors of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Windsor and Essex County
The law firm of Miller Canfield announces that Windsor resident, Joseph G. Vernon, an associate in the Detroit office, has been appointed to the board of directors of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Windsor and Essex County.

Vernon’s practice includes litigation and dispute resolution and Canadian law. He practices in both the United States and Canada.

He is a member of the State Bar of Michigan, Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, Law Society of Upper Canada, Ontario Bar Association and Essex Law Association.

He received his J.D. from the University of Detroit, and a bachelor of laws from the University of Windsor. He also holds a B.B.A. from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario.

Miller Canfield Presents "Michigan's New Business Tax" - August 21 in Windsor
The law firm of Miller Canfield presents “Michigan’s New Business Tax,” an informational briefing on the five-bill package recently signed into law by Michigan Governor Granholm to replace the Single Business Tax. The seminar will help Ontario companies with operations in Michigan understand how the new tax affects doing business in Michigan and shipping goods into the state.

Tax lawyers from Miller Canfield will hold a special briefing in Windsor, free of charge, on Tuesday, August 21, from 8:00-10:00 a.m. at the Miller Canfield offices at 443 Ouellette Avenue in downtown Windsor.

Los Angeles Office Welcomes Two New IP Attorneys
McDermott Will & Emery is pleased to announce that Laurence Berman and Eric Levinrad have joined the Firm in the Intellectual Property, Media & Technology Department based in the Los Angeles office. Mr. Berman joins McDermott as a partner while Mr. Levinrad joins as counsel.

Prior to joining McDermott, Mr. Berman was the managing principal and founder of Berman, Mausner & Resser. Mr. Berman has served as trial counsel in over 40 trials and arbitrations and has represented a wide variety of clients across industry sectors. Mr. Berman focuses on intellectual property litigation, including copyright, trademark, trade secret and unfair competition matters.

Mr. Berman and Mr. Levinrad recently completed a three and a half week jury trial in Los Angeles Superior Court involving a real estate dispute and breach of a settlement agreement. At the conclusion of this trial, they obtained a $6 million jury verdict in favor of their clients, consisting of $2 million in compensatory damages and an additional $4 million in punitive damages. The Court also indicated that it would award attorneys' fees and costs as part of the final judgment.

Mr. Levinrad has extensive experience in pre-trial, trial and appellate proceedings. He focuses his practice on complex business litigation, and intellectual property litigation, including trademark, copyright and trade secret cases. Mr. Levinrad is recognized for his written and oral advocacy and research skills, having yielded numerous cost effective and successful results for clients.

"We are excited to have this pair join our local practice in Los Angeles," commented Mark Wine, co-head of the Los Angeles intellectual property practice. "Laurence and Eric are a great fit with our office and will quickly become an asset to our California and global IP team."

Mr. Berman earned his J.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles and his B.A. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a member of the State Bar of California. Mr. Levinrad earned his J.D. from the University of California at Berkeley and his B.A. from the University of California at Los Angeles. He is a member of the State Bar of California.

"This team is dynamic, and their practice will greatly complement our existing IP practice in Los Angeles, while adding more depth to our office," commented Gordon Greenberg, partner-in-charge of the Los Angeles office.

Partner Pamela Hemminger Elected Vice Chair of California Law Revision Commission
Los Angeles partner Pamela Hemminger has been elected Vice Chairperson of the California Law Revision Commission, a state agency which studies complex and controversial areas of California law and recommends legislation and reform to the Governor and Legislature. Hemminger, who was appointed to the Commission in 2005, represents management in all aspects of labor and employment law. She will serve as Vice Chairperson for one year beginning September 1, 2007.

Dykema announces that Michelle A. Gale has joined the firm as an associate in its Environmental practice group. Ms. Gale’s practice focuses on environmental compliance and regulatory issues, environmental litigation, and environmental due diligence in transactions. She also has experience with toxic tort defense.

A resident of Lisle, Illinois, Ms. Gale received her B.S., summa cum laude, from Calumet College of Saint Joseph and her J.D., magna cum laude, from John Marshall Law School. She was formerly an associate with Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP.
