Tamara Hjelle Olsen Receives Industry Leader Award
The Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal named Tamara Hjelle Olsen an “Industry Leader” in its 2007 Women in Business project. Industry Leaders are women who have risen to the top of their fields—key players at the forefront of their industries and innovators who are leading trends and breaking new ground. Honorees were selected by the Business Journal’s editors and recognized at an awards ceremony on July 25.

In its 10th year, the Women in Business project honored 51 women who have transformed the business community through corporate leadership, entrepreneurial excellence, and innovation. This year, the Business Journal recognized 25 “Women to Watch” and 25 “Industry Leaders,” and honored one woman with the Career Achievement award and one male CEO with the Ally award.

“I am so pleased to be honored with the Business Journal’s Industry Leader award,” says Olsen. “The Women in Business project has a longstanding tradition of recognizing a diverse group of established and emerging women business leaders and I’m honored to be included in the class of 2007.”

Olsen is GPM’s Managing Officer and Chair of its Board of Directors, co-chair of the firm's Higher Education practice group, and a principal in its Employment Law practice group. She advises businesses and nonprofit clients in personnel-related matters, and advises colleges and universities, and their boards, on general higher education issues including accreditation, student affairs, faculty issues, and conduct code violations.

A summa cum laude graduate of Moorhead State University, Olsen earned her J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School in 1986. She received the Author’s Award from the Minnesota State Bar Association in 1989, is consistently named a Minnesota Law & Politics "Super Lawyer" and, in 2006, was named a “Top 100 Female Super Lawyer.”

Olsen is also a member of Minnesota Women Lawyers, the Hennepin County Bar Association, and a past member of the Minnesota State Bar Association Committee on Women in the Legal Professions. She serves on the Board of Trustees for Dunwoody College of Technology and is a member of its Personnel Committee. Olsen has also taught “Women and the Law” at the University of Minnesota and served on the Park Nicollet Medical Foundation Institutional Review Board. She was named GPM’s Managing Officer in 2007 and is the first woman to hold that position in the firm’s 141-year history.
