Venable Adds Capitol Hill Veteran Craig Metz to its Legislative Group
Bolstering its well-established group of Capitol Hill veterans, Venable LLP has named Craig Huseman Metz, who has a combined 20 years of experience in public service in the legislative and executive branches, as well as in private sector government relations positions, as a partner in the firm's Washington-based government relations practice.

Mr. Metz joins Venable after a five-year tour representing the government affairs interests of Boston-based EMC Corporation, a Fortune 200 company and global leader in information technology (IT) systems and services. He is continuing his relationship with EMC, representing the company before the Congress on IT related issues, including patent reform. Mr. Metz notes that, as one of the country's top IT research firms, EMC has been granted almost 1,400 patents, and has more than 1,500 patent applications in the pipeline.

Prior to joining EMC in 2001, Mr. Metz, a native of South Carolina, served for eight years as Chief of Staff for the late Congressman Floyd Spence (R-SC), during his tenure as Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee. In addition to his work for Congressman Spence, Mr. Metz concurrently served as a legislative coordinator for the Chairman on the influential House Armed Services Committee. Upon Congressman Spence's death, in August 2001, Mr. Metz became the Administrator of the Office of the Second Congressional District of South Carolina, where he managed the District's five offices, until Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) was sworn into office.

Mr. Metz has also spent time on the other side of Capitol Hill. He served as Counsel on two subcommittees of the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources (now known as Health, Education, Labor and Pensions). He was also responsible for advising the subcommittee's ranking member, the late Senator Strom Thurmond (R-SC), on all labor, health, and education issues before the Senate.

"Craig Metz is a man of immense integrity. His energy and enthusiasm for the causes he advocates is rare in Washington," said Senator Lindsey O. Graham (R-SC). "I have known Craig from my first day on the job as a Representative. Now, in my role as a United States Senator, I continue to be impressed with Craig's breadth of knowledge on the current and emerging issues important to Congress and the American people."

"Craig Metz is the epitome of honesty and integrity," added House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn (D-SC). "I found his service on the Hill to be as effective and efficient as any member could be blessed to have. He will do Venable and its associates proud."

Mr. Metz's career includes significant executive branch experience. From 1990-1993, he served in a variety of positions in President George H.W. Bush's administration, including serving as the Department of Education's Deputy Assistant Secretary for Congressional Liaison. Mr. Metz also served at the United States Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission, where he was chief legal advisor and administrative assistant to one of the Commissioners.

"With his deep background in both the legislative and executive branches and his command of so many key policy issues, from defense to health care, technology, energy, labor and education, Craig Metz is an outstanding addition to our group," said Michael Ferrell, who chairs Venable's Legislative and Government Affairs Practice Group. "Craig's intimacy with both legislative chambers and his deep knowledge of the sometimes arcane appropriations process will be a huge benefit to our clients."

Mr. Metz arrives on the heels of a number of prominent Capitol Hill hands who have joined Venable in recent months, including former Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations Chief Counsel Raymond Shepherd; former Pfizer Vice President for Governmental Relations Catherine Bennett; and former Counsel to the House Telecommunications Subcommittee William Norwind.

"We're very pleased that so many senior government affairs and policy professionals choose to continue their careers at Venable," Mr. Ferrell noted.

"I thoroughly enjoyed my time at EMC. It was exactly the right place to be after almost two decades of government service, where I could focus my efforts on representing an innovative high technology company on a wide range of Federal issues," Mr. Metz said.

"I am excited by the challenge and opportunity of representing a diverse group of clients across multiple legislative fronts," he added. "Venable has one of the strongest government affairs groups in the country. With appropriations issues being critically important to so many businesses and non-profit institutions, I plan to focus much of my efforts on assisting clients with the authorization and appropriations processes. Also, Venable's knowledge base and professional skill set will be a great advantage to my representation of clients in a broad array of areas, and I am looking forward to coordinating my policy experience with the firm's entire legislative practice."

In addition to his public service, Mr. Metz was an Assistant Director of the Congressional Affairs Division of the American Medical Association (AMA). In this role, he was involved with federal legislative relations and communications with AMA state societies.

Mr. Metz received his J.D. from The University of Memphis School of Law, and his B.A. from The University of Tennessee.
