Sedgwick's Executive Director Appointed to Girls Inc. Board of Directors
Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold LLP announced that Executive Director Nancy Constantine was appointed to the board of directors for Girls Inc. of the Island City. During Constantine's three year term with Girls Inc, she'll work to raise funds, and elevate the organization's profile in the Bay Area. The Island City chapter has worked to inspire and educate thousands of girls, particularly those in high-risk, underserved areas, for more than 40 years. Nationally, Girls Inc. has helped millions of girls across the country to lead independent and fulfilling lives.

At the conclusion of the extensive interview process, Girls Inc. selected Constantine for her exemplary professional accomplishments, her personal values, and her dedication to the community. A former police officer during the 1970's, a self-made business executive, and Sedgwick's first executive director, Constantine has a proven track-record for succeeding in male-dominated professions. She is also an instrumental part of Sedgwick's Women's Forum program, which supports the firm's women attorneys through a series of client events and internal training sessions.

"I'm thrilled to join the Girls Inc. board of directors, and help inspire a new generation of girls to succeed in the face of adversity," said Constantine.

"Everyone who encounters Nancy marvels at her incredible intelligence, style and warmth," said Sedgwick Chairman Kevin Dunne. "She is a constant source of inspiration at Sedgwick, and will no doubt, be a wonderful asset to Girls Inc."

Sedgwick's other offices also dedicate time to the Girls Inc. organization. Orange County Partner Tom Delaney was elected to the board of trustees of the Girls Inc. Orange County chapter, and other Sedgwick attorneys have participated in Girls Inc. fundraisers and other events.

Sedgwick Expands Insurance Practice Group with Lateral Partner
Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold LLP announced that Hilary N. Rowen, formerly of Thelen Reid Brown Raysman & Steiner LLP, has joined Sedgwick's San Francisco office as a partner and member of the firm's Insurance Practices Group.

"Sedgwick is known as the go-to firm for the world's largest insurance companies," said Rowen. "I came to Sedgwick because I want to practice alongside the best."

Rowen brings her regulatory expertise to Sedgwick's already robust Insurance Practices Group. Rowen advises clients on a wide range of insurance regulatory matters, including compliance issues, California Department of Insurance enforcement actions, rate hearings, rulemaking proceedings and insurer insolvencies. She also advises insurers on regulatory issues in connection with mergers and acquisitions, surplus note issuances and other transactions. She received her J.D., cum laude, from Harvard Law School; her M.P.P. from Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government; and her B.A., with honors, from Stanford University.

"Hilary Rowen's exceptional insurance regulatory expertise will prove an enormous benefit to Sedgwick's clients," said San Francisco Managing Partner Michael Healy.

Sedgwick's insurance practice comprises one of the largest international insurance industry teams of trial attorneys and policy advisors dedicated to the institutional concerns and success of insurance carriers.

Texas Association of Broadcasters Honors Sedgwick Attorney
Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold LLP announced that the Texas Association of Broadcasters (TAB) honored Sedgwick Partner Laura Prather for her "outstanding efforts in the continuing battle to pass the Texas Free Flow of Information Act." The legislation would allow the media to protect the identity of whistleblowers, who risk professional and personal retribution for exposing corporate or government malfeasance. TAB is the largest state broadcast association in the nation, representing more than 1,100 radio and television stations.

"Since there is currently minimal legal protection for whistleblowers, companies only need to obtain a simple subpoena to discover the name of a source," said Prather. "Consequently, potential whistleblowers do not come forward, and the public suffers while corruption and malfeasance go unchecked."

Prather chaired a committee to work on passing the legislation and also drafted and negotiated much of the legislation, which passed unanimously out of the Senate and House committees and with a resounding 27-4 vote out of the full Senate. In the final week of the legislative session, the bill was killed on a technicality on the House floor. Prather will continue her work and embark on the process again in 2009.

"Laura Prather's incredible legal prowess and passion to protect the media industry make her the perfect recipient of this award," said Neil Rambin, Managing Partner of the firm's Dallas office. "I am proud to work alongside her, and continue to be impressed by her tireless efforts to improve the media's ability to expose dangerous situations which would otherwise remain hidden."

An active member of TAB's Legislative Affairs Committee for more than a decade, Prather currently serves as the associate member representative on its board of directors, and in 2005 was awarded the TAB Special President's Award for her contributions to the broadcast industry.

In addition to her work with TAB, she serves as lead counsel to the Legislative Advisory Committee of the Texas Daily Newspaper Association and the Texas Press Association. She is the vice president of the Freedom of Information Foundation of Texas, serves as co-chair of the American Bar Association's First Amendment and Media Litigation Committee, and is on the board of directors for public television station KLRU.

Prather's practice, based in the firm's Austin office, is concentrated at the trial and appellate level in commercial and business litigation, open government issues, First Amendment litigation, copyright and trademark litigation, and privacy concerns. She received her J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law, with honors, and her B.B.A. from the University of Texas, with highest honors.

Sedgwick Attracts Banner Real Estate Group
Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold LLP announces that the six attorneys formerly of Woo & Associates, P.C. will join the firm's San Francisco office on Monday, June 25. Led by Jeffery Woo, the real estate boutique focused its practice on representing institutional and regional property holders, and real estate professionals. The services offered by Woo and associates David Blumenfeld, Harrison Nam, Scott Okamoto, Stanley Riddell and Stephen Sherman will complement Sedgwick's existing offerings to the real estate community, which include litigation and transactional services for a wide range of commercial real estate owners, developers, managers, lessees and professionals. The addition of the six attorneys continues Sedgwick's growth in its San Francisco office and nationwide and reflects the firm's commitment to the expansion of its services through the hiring of experienced attorneys.

"We welcome Jeff and his group to our team," said Steve Roland, head of Sedgwick's Commercial Practices Division and Real Estate Litigation Practice. "Jeff's experience and reputation as well as that of his colleagues will enhance the current roster of real estate litigation and transactional services we offer our clients while adding new practice dimensions to our firm."

The Woo group has offered clients a broad variety of real estate litigation and transactional services. However, their practice has been concentrated in the representation of property owners in leasing and related landlord-tenant matters.

"International firms with multinational corporate clients can sometimes fall into the trap of overlooking the service requirements of potential clients in our own backyards," said Kevin Dunne, Sedgwick chairman. "While Sedgwick will always represent many Fortune 100 clients, we also remain focused on the development of local client relationships from each of our 13 locations. With his deep roots in the Northern California real estate community, Jeff and his group bring a knowledge of local real estate practices that is unsurpassed and will be a tremendous benefit to our clients in this region."

The move by Woo and his associates to Sedgwick is indicative of a growing trend among small firms that move their practice to firms with a national or international presence. Larger firms offer a network of administrative support and can provide a platform to launch services into new geographic markets. However, a common firm culture and client service philosophy are essential for these moves to be successful.

"I have run my own firm for over 16 years and wouldn't consider moving to a large firm unless we shared the same culture and client service values," noted Woo. "Sedgwick believes in providing extraordinary legal counsel to their clients. They offer real world, actionable advice that makes clients' business and personal interests a top priority. My clients expect that and will continue to receive it at Sedgwick."
