Moore Joins Labor and Employment and Complex Litigation Practice Groups
Portia R. Moore has joined Lane Powell as a Shareholder in the Labor and Employment Practice Group and the Complex Litigation Practice Group, where she will focus her practice on complex litigation with an emphasis on wrongful termination and race and sex discrimination claims.

Prior to joining Lane Powell, Moore worked at Morrison & Foerster, starting as an associate in the Litigation Department in 1982. In January 1986, she accepted a position as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington (Seattle, Wash.). As lead counsel for the government, she successfully litigated numerous jury trial cases involving charges of money laundering, mail fraud, tax violations, continuing criminal enterprise (CCE), racketeering (RICO) and national security issues; and successfully argued numerous cases before the Ninth Circuit.

Upon returning to Morrison & Foerster in 1990 as a Partner, Moore’s litigation practice concentrated on complex litigation including the successful defense of major product liability claims brought against her client 3M, and the successful defense of numerous cases of racial and sexual discrimination, sexual harassment and wrongful termination.

Moore received her J.D. from the University of Michigan, and her B.S. in Nursing, cum laude, from University of Washington.

King & Spalding Expands Houston Bankruptcy Practice With Arrival of Partner Henry Kaim
King & Spalding, a leading international law firm, announced today the continued expansion of its financial restructuring practice in Houston with the addition of noted bankruptcy lawyer Henry J. Kaim as a partner. Kaim, a renowned figure in the Texas legal market and national bankruptcy bar, has an extensive background in bankruptcy law, with preeminence in debtor-side representation.

King & Spalding established a financial restructuring capability in Houston in May of this year to complement existing practices in Atlanta and New York, with the arrival of senior counsels Myron (Mickey) Sheinfeld and Jarrel (Jerry) McDaniel.

“We are pleased to welcome Henry to King & Spalding,” said Robert E. (Bobby) Meadows, managing partner of King & Spalding’s Houston office. “He is an exceptional lawyer who will add depth to the representation we provide our clients.”

Kaim joins King & Spalding from Bracewell & Giuliani LLP, where he was a partner.

Kaim, who was co-head of the financial restructuring and bankruptcy section of his previous firm, represents and counsels business clients in all aspects of out-of-court financial restructurings, as well as Chapter 11 reorganizations, including the negotiation of complex plans of reorganization and the litigation of contested matters and adversary proceedings. For the past 18 years, he has practiced exclusively in business bankruptcy law, representing Chapter 11 debtors in possession, creditors’ committees, secured creditors, landlords and acquirers in bankruptcy, across a broad array of industries.

Kaim earned a B.A. degree from Southern Methodist University, and a J.D. degree from the University of Houston Law Center. He is a fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy, a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and an adjunct professor at the University of Houston Law Center.

Michael Schlitt Joins Fried Frank’s Capital Markets Practice in Frankfurt
Fried Frank announced today that Dr. Michael Schlitt has joined the Firm’s Frankfurt office from Allen & Overy LLP, where he was head of the German Equity Capital Markets Practice. He has joined the Firm with a five-lawyer team.

Michael Schlitt is one of Frankfurt's leading capital markets lawyers and has broad experience in international equity capital market transactions, particularly IPOs, rights issues, convertible and exchangeable bonds and block trade transactions. With extensive experience advising investment banks, he has also recently worked on substantial transactions for Wacker and Versatel. He has published numerous articles on issues relating to equity capital markets, stock corporation and takeover law. He is also a lecturer of capital markets law at the University of Cologne.

Over the past three years Fried Frank has expanded its European practice, opening its Frankfurt office in 2004 under the leadership of partners Jürgen van Kann and Sven Schulte-Hillen. The firm has won some significant mandates in that period, recently advising AEA Investors LLC in the acquisition of Pactiv Corporation’s European protective and flexible packaging business, NTL (now Virgin Media) on its acquisition of Virgin Mobile and Silver Point on the acquisition of CF Gomma Barre Thomas, which was part of the largest restructuring plan in France.

Karen Grandstrand Named One of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal’s Industry Leaders
Karen Grandstrand, a firm shareholder and chair of Fredrikson & Byron’s Bank & Finance Group, has been named one of the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal’s 25 Industry Leaders. Karen was honored on July 25th at the Business Journal’s Women in Business project, which celebrated its 10th anniversary this year. Karen was nominated by her peers as an example of an extraordinary woman executive.

Karen Grandstrand is the chair of Fredrikson & Byron’s Bank & Finance Group. She has an extensive background in and knowledge of regulatory matters, acquisitions, and payments system issues. She advises financial institutions on examination findings and enforcement actions, bank acquisitions and non-bank activities, forming new banks, new payments and trust products, corporate governance, privacy and information security, USA Patriot Act requirements, and a variety of compliance matters.

Fenwick & West Creates Diversity and Public Interest Summer Associate Fellowship
Fenwick & West, a premier law firm providing comprehensive legal services to high technology and life sciences clients, has established an innovative Diversity and Public Interest Summer Associate Fellowship. The Fellowship will be presented to up to two summer associates who will work for eight weeks at Fenwick & West, then will work for the remainder of the summer, at law firm summer associate pay levels, with one of many public interest organizations that focuses on serving the legal needs of a diverse population.

The Fellowship will be available to second year law students selected for their commitment to community service, exceptional leadership and outstanding academic performance. Public interest organizations that have agreed to partner with Fenwick & West to provide placements for law students include organizations such as the Asian Law Caucus and La Raza Centro Legal.

Managing Partner Kate Fritz said "We designed the scholarship to fulfill two goals: to encourage and support future lawyers committed to a professional life that includes activism on diversity and to extend direct service to the legal needs of historically underrepresented and diverse groups. We are always looking for new and creative ways to extend and deepen our commitments to diversity and pro bono service, and this scholarship is the latest example."

Fenwick & West received high honors on the Minority Law Journal's Diversity Scorecard. The firm recently placed third in a field of 244 U.S. law firms reporting ethnic minority data.

Veena K. Jain Joins Investment Management Practice at Drinker Biddle Gardner Carton
Veena K. Jain has joined Drinker Biddle Gardner Carton’s Investment Management Practice Group as counsel.

Jain, most recently at Bell, Boyd & Lloyd LLP, moves her practice to Drinker Biddle’s Chicago office, which has expanded as a result of Drinker Biddle & Reath LLP’s merger with Gardner Carton & Douglas LLP. Previously, she was an attorney in the Division of Investment Management at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Washington, D.C.

“We have one of the top Investment Management practices in the country, and Veena is a significant addition to it,” said Drinker Biddle Chairman Alfred W. Putnam, Jr. “She helps expand the reach of our very strong investment management practice, which is one of the important strategic goals of our merger with Gardner Carton.” Jain counsels clients in the investment management industry on regulatory, corporate, compliance and contractual matters. She is experienced in the representation of investment advisers, investment companies and their directors, broker-dealers, futures commission merchants, hedge funds and other financial market participants. During her time at the SEC, Jain worked primarily in the Office of Chief Counsel, where she prepared responses to no-action and interpretative requests concerning investment companies and investment advisers.

“Veena’s experience will be a great asset both to our group and to our clients,” said Michael P. Malloy, chair of Drinker Biddle’s Investment Management Group. “Her regulatory experience will be very valuable when advising clients on complying with the intricacies of the rules set by her former employer.”

Jain earned her juris doctor from the University of Michigan Law School and graduated with honors from Northwestern University with a bachelor’s degree in economics/mathematical methods in social sciences.

Dickstein Shapiro Welcomes Nancy Broff to The Firm’s Corporate & Finance Practice
Dickstein Shapiro LLP is pleased to announce the addition of Nancy Broff to the firm’s Corporate & Finance Practice. Ms. Broff will focus her practice on postsecondary education issues, representing participants in change of control and corporate finance transactions involving postsecondary education companies, and counseling clients on matters related to the U.S. Department of Education, regulatory compliance, and state and federal legislation. She also will advise clients on matters including student financial aid and institutional administration; governance; and whistleblower and other private litigation.

Prior to joining Dickstein Shapiro, Ms. Broff was with the Career College Association for 15 years, most recently as the Association’s General Counsel. In this capacity, Ms. Broff represented the postsecondary education industry in dealings with the U.S. Department of Education, counseling schools specifically on matters of regulatory and legal compliance. She advised the Association on legislative issues including the Higher Education Act of 1965, student financial assistance, distance education, transfer of academic credit, and accreditation.
