Six Varnum Attorneys Named in Chambers USA 2007
Six attorneys from Varnum, Riddering, Schmidt & Howlett LLP are included in the recently-released edition of Chambers USA 2007. The firm was also ranked in four major practice areas.

Chambers USA is a reference guide that ranks both attorneys and law firms who practice corporate law. Because Chambers USA rankings are derived through peer reviews and client interviews, it is considered an objective look into the practice of attorneys and ranks the firms and attorneys considered leaders in their field. For the current directory, over 14,000 interviews were conducted with both attorneys and clients by a team of over 40 full-time researchers over a period of six months.

Sutherland Adds Dr. David E. Wigley to Intellectual Property Practice
Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP announces, David E. Wigley,Ph.D. has joined the firm’s highly regarded Intellectual Property Practice Group as Counsel resident in the Atlanta office. Dr. Wigley will focus his practice on securing, maintaining and enforcing intellectual property rights for companies in the United States and around the world.

Having earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Dr. Wigley’s legal work involves the chemical, pharmaceutical and life sciences sectors. He has prepared and prosecuted patent applications, developed opinions regarding patent validity and infringement and provided counseling and due diligence involving these issues.

The addition of Dr. Wigley brings the number of attorneys in Sutherland’s Intellectual Property Practice Group to 49. Within the IP group, 26 attorneys are members of the U.S. Patent Bar, 6 have Ph.Ds, 14 have masters degrees and one has an MD. Among Sutherland’s 49 IP attorneys, 7 have degrees in biological sciences; 14 have degrees in chemistry, chemical engineering or petroleum engineering; 8 have degrees in electrical engineering, computer engineering or computer science; and 5 have degrees in mechanical or civil engineering.

“The addition of David helps bolster the reputation of Sutherland’s already strong IP Practice,” said Mark D. Wasserman, the firm’s managing partner. “His combination of legal expertise and extensive technical knowledge afford him the opportunity to dive deep into the intricacies of IP law, therefore offering our clients the best counsel possible.”

“David broadens and deepens our bench of patent attorneys and is a good fit in both our chemical and life sciences patent practices,” added IP Practice Group Leader Peter G. Pappas. “His experience and expertise will complement our existing client teams in those areas. David is highly regarded in the patent community and has good contacts of his own in the chemical industry.”

A graduate of The University of Arizona College of Law, Dr. Wigley was a member of the Arizona Law Review and was named Outstanding Oral Advocate of the First Year Moot Court. Prior to practicing law, he was a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Arizona for 15 years, where he directed a research group investigating the diverse aspects of synthetic and catalytic inorganic, organometallic and materials chemistry. He was also a visiting faculty member at the California Institute of Technology.

Dr. Wigley earned a B.S. in Chemistry and Soil Science from Mississippi State University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from Purdue University. He conducted post-doctoral research at MIT and The University of Oxford.

ING Corporate General Counsel B. Scott Burton Joins Sutherland Asbill & Brennan
Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP announces former ING America Insurance Holdings, Inc. Corporate General Counsel B. Scott Burton has joined the firm’s highly regarded Corporate Practice Group as partner, resident in the Atlanta office. Mr. Burton’s practice augments the corporate mergers and acquisitions and corporate finance and securities practices.

While at ING, Mr. Burton oversaw the legal department functional activities of ING Americas Executive Center, which includes the company’s financial services businesses in North and South America. He also oversaw the Corporate and Transactional Practice Group. Mr. Burton spent the last 10 years as the legal architect of ING’s massive expansion in the Americas. Under his direct legal guidance and hands-on involvement, ING has participated in over $25 billion in transactions in the financial services and insurance sectors.

Also joining Sutherland’s Corporate Practice Group from ING is Atlanta Counsel William H. Hope, II, whose practice focuses primarily on corporate finance. Mr. Hope, who is also a Chartered Financial Analyst®, served ING Investment Management Americas as Vice President, Corporate Legal, since 2000. There he worked extensively on the negotiation and documentation of structured derivative transactions, including ISDA Master Agreements and related documentation, and on the regulation of exchange-traded and over-the-counter derivatives products under federal law and state insurance law. Prior to joining ING, Mr. Hope was based in Tokyo, working for CS First Boston, AFLAC and GE Capital.

Martin Brinkley and Caryn McNeill Named Co-Chairs of the North Carolina Bar Association '4All Task Force'
Smith Anderson partners Caryn McNeill and Martin Brinkley will co-chair the "4All" Task Force, an initiative of the North Carolina Bar Association and the North Carolina Bar Foundation that will address systemic problems relating to the provision of legal services to poor North Carolinians. The Task Force will address four primary areas: legislation, legal aid funding, lawyer participation in pro bono work and educating the bar about legal aid needs. The "4All" effort is the centerpiece of NCBA President Janet Ward Black's presidential year and is running in tandem with increased attention to legal aid issues around the country.

The members of the Task Force will consist of distinguished judges and lawyers from around the state. The Task Force will lead efforts to endow a fund within the North Carolina Bar Foundation that will support Legal Aid of North Carolina, Inc., the largest statewide provider of legal services to the poor. Task Force members will coordinate a statewide service day (currently scheduled for April 4, 2008), create a mechanism for North Carolina lawyers to voice their support for legal aid initiatives before the state legislature, address the challenges legal aid lawyers face in repaying educational debt, and educate North Carolina lawyers about the changing face of poverty in the state. The group anticipates completing its work by June 2008.

Devine Elected President of ADD Board
Schottenstein Zox & Dunn Co., LPA (SZD) is proud to announce that Patrick A. Devine, a partner in the firm, has been elected to serve as president of the board of directors for the Association of the Developmentally Disabled (ADD).

ADD is a nonprofit Ohio corporation providing habilitation, residential and vocational services for the developmentally disabled. Devine has assisted the organization since 2001, serving on its board of directors in roles such as secretary and vice president, prior to being elected president this year.

Prince Lobel Expands Real Estate Group

James “Ted” Hoyt joins Prince Lobel as an associate. His practice will center on telecommunications and general real estate matters. Ted joins Prince Lobel from Portnoy and Greene, PC, where he lead the firm’s litigation department, focusing his practice in the areas of real estate litigation and transactions. Before obtaining his law degree, Ted was a military officer, serving in the Army Special Forces (“Green Beret”) in a variety of assignments and locations.
