Fulbright Partner Mark Baker Named Among World’s Top 20 Arbitration Practitioners
When it comes to international disputes, Fulbright & Jaworski L.L.P. partner Mark Baker is an arbitration practitioner who tops the globe, according to a legal guide released today.

Mr. Baker is among the world’s Top 20 arbitration practitioners, according to PLC’s Cross-border Dispute Resolution Handbook and PLC Which Lawyer? The publications provide comparative information and recommend leading lawyers. The selection was based on interviews with Mr. Baker’s peers and research into cases he has handled.

“I accept this chiefly as recognition of the significant growth and expertise Fulbright’s International Department has when it comes to international dispute resolution,” said Mr. Baker, who is a co-head of the firm’s international department. “Fulbright’s attorneys have specialized worldwide practices that serve our clients by reaching far beyond any one country’s or continent’s borders.”

The publications cited Mr. Baker for his recent appointment as an arbitrator in IP-related disputes and his representation of a multinational energy company against a Salvadorian governmental energy agency.

Among those who have sought Mr. Baker’s representation are a Russian oil company in a variety of arbitrations and disputes, including what was considered the largest commercial arbitration in the world by American Lawyer in 2005, and an international consortium of North American and Brazilian investors seeking damages from a Brazilian public utility based on a contract dispute over a Brazilian power generation plant.

Mr. Baker also has represented a Houston-based energy services company in a multimillion dollar arbitration against the government of Peru and a power company doing business with the government-owned electric company of El Salvador in which $400 million was at stake.

More than a decade ago, Mr. Baker recognized the potential for exponential growth in international alternative dispute resolution. He leveraged Fulbright’s strength in energy and industries building infrastructure with its rich tradition in litigation. Today, the firm’s international department has 130 attorneys in 13 offices worldwide. More than 14 foreign languages are spoken by Fulbright lawyers, who are at home before arbitral tribunals around the globe.

Additionally, the International Center for Dispute Resolution of the American Arbitration Association recently selected Mr. Baker to be the chairman of its International Advisory Committee. In addition to his advocacy practice, Mr. Baker has chaired at least eight significant arbitration cases annually since 1998.

Last month, Mr. Baker was chosen by The National Law Journal as one of the nation’s 100 most influential lawyers. The selection was based Mr. Baker’s impact in his field and his power to lay groundwork for the future.

Mr. Baker attended Yale University and went onto law school at Duke University, graduating with high honors. Mr. Baker, 46, was admitted to practice law in Texas in 1984.
