King & Spalding Ranks 13th in the Nation for Issuer PIPE Deals in First Half of 2007

Kennedy Covington Welcomes New Associate
Kennedy Covington, one of the largest law firms in the Carolinas, is pleased to announce that Shannon (Missy) Sumerell Spainhour has joined the Firm as an associate in the litigation department.

Located in Kennedy Covington's Charlotte office, Spainhour will focus her practice on employment law, advising her clients on a broad range of issues involving the employee-employer relationship.

Her experience includes handling matters before administrative agencies including the EEOC, the ESC and federal and state Departments of Labor, as well as litigating matters in state and federal courts in North Carolina and elsewhere. She has managed issues involving employment discrimination, civil rights, the Family and Medical Leave Act, wage and hour law, trade secret protection and non-competition matters.

Spainhour received her J.D. from Wake Forest University and her B.A. from Sewanee: The University of the South. Prior to joining Kennedy Covington, she practiced exclusively in the areas of labor and employment law for another law firm in Charlotte Spainhour is a member of the North Carolina Bar Association, Labor and Employment section, Mecklenburg County Bar, Young Lawyer's Division and the North Carolina Association of Defense Attorneys.

Benjamin G. Stewart Joins Keating Muething & Klekamp
Benjamin G. Stewart has joined Keating Muething & Klekamp (KMK) as an associate in the litigation practice group.

Prior to joining KMK, Mr. Stewart was an associate in the Commercial, Competition and Securities Litigation group at the Chicago office of Sidley Austin LLP. There, he represented clients in a wide variety of litigation, including securities cases, class actions and commercial arbitration. He also represented clients in response to SEC, NASD and Department of Justice actions, as well as in connection with several internal investigations. Mr. Stewart has also handled several pro bono matters, including a political asylum claim, and has coached two high school mock trial teams. During law school, he clerked for the Cook County Office of the Public Guardian. He received his J.D. from The University of Chicago Law School (2006) and his B.A. from Otterbein College, magna cum laude (2000).

Julia Offenhauser Joins Gray Plant Mooty’s Business Advisory Group
The law firm of Gray Plant Mooty is pleased to announce that Julia Sinaiko Offenhauser joined the firm’s Minneapolis office on July 30. As an associate in GPM’s Business Advisory Group, Offenhauser focuses her practice in the areas of general business law and public bond financing.

Prior to joining Gray Plant Mooty, Offenhauser was with the New York office of Dorsey & Whitney and served as a pro bono attorney with the New York Legal Assistance Group. She also clerked for Federal Magistrate Judge Jeanne Graham in Hennepin County.

“We are delighted to have someone with Julia’s talents join us,” says Dan Tenenbaum, co-chair of GPM’s Business Advisory Group. “She has experience and skills that will help us continue providing the highest quality support to our business clients. Offenhauser earned her J.D. from the University of St. Thomas (UST) School of Law and her B.A., cum laude, from UST. While in law school, she clerked for Mid-Minnesota Legal Assistance, the Law Offices of William Mauzy, and the Office of the Minnesota State Public Defender—Appellate Division. Offenhauser also served as a facilitator for Central City Neighborhood, as a certified student attorney with the UST Law Clinic, and as a research assistant to Professor Nekima Levy-Pounds at the UST School of Law.

Fox Rothschild Ranks 4th Nationally and 1st Locally in Philadelphia & Princeton on AM LAW’s 2007 Mid-Level Associate Survey
Fox Rothschild has been ranked 4th nationally in overall associate satisfaction on the recent American Lawyer Magazine Annual Mid-Level Associate survey. The ranking is a vast improvement over Fox’s 2006 ranking of 140 out of 170 participating firms – making Fox the “Most Improved Score” on the list.

“Our associates are the backbone of our firm, and we’re pleased to know that they feel appreciated here at Fox,” said Mark Silow, Fox’s Administrative Partner and Chief Operating Officer. “The improvement in our national ranking this year is astounding, and the first place rankings in Philadelphia and Princeton show our deep commitment to providing associates with top-quality work, strong partner mentoring, and the opportunities they need to forge their own client relationships.”

Fox received an overall score of 4.349 out of a possible 5.00. The survey’s overall average satisfaction score was 3.81. Am Law received responses from 7,172 third-, fourth- and fifth-year associates from 189 participating firms. A total of 164 firms returned the required amount of surveys to be included in the rankings.

In addition to the national ranking, Fox placed first in the local Philadelphia and Princeton markets, with scores of 4.468 and 4.400 respectively. Associates gave Fox high marks in the areas of associate relations, likelihood of staying two years, level of responsibility, amount of client contact, collegiality, and opportunity to work with partners.

Firms were rated based on 11 areas that contribute to job satisfaction, including partner relations, work satisfaction, training, compensation and benefits, billable policy, management openness about firm strategy, partnership opportunities, and the associate’s desire to remain with the firm.

Michael Randolph Receives Certification as Construction Law Specialist
Michael D. Randolph, an attorney with the law firm of Fowler White Boggs Banker, has been board certified in Construction Law by the Board of Legal Specialization & Education of The Florida Bar. This certification recognizes lawyers who demonstrate special knowledge, skills and proficiency in Construction Law.

Mr. Randolph practices in the firm’s Commercial Litigation Practice Group. His areas of practice include general civil trial practice with an emphasis on construction and real estate litigation representing primarily contractors.

Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione President Gary Ropski to Participate in MCCA Diversity Roundtable in Washington, D.C.
Gary Ropski, president of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the U.S., is one of five law firm executives invited to participate in a roundtable discussion on the metrics of diversity management at top law firms. The panel will be held on August 7, 2007, in Washington, D.C. and is sponsored by the Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) and its publication, Diversity & the Bar. The discussion will focus on how these firms measure success as it pertains to diversity and will be moderated by Hinton J. Lucas, Associate General Counsel and Chief Administrative Counsel of DuPont.

In recognition of MCCA’s 10th anniversary this year, Diversity & the Bar will publish a special issue which will feature an article based on the roundtable discussion.

Gary Ropski has practiced intellectual property law exclusively since joining Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione in 1976. His practice now focuses on litigation, but has included patent prosecution and litigation; trademark prosecution; including oppositions and litigation; trade dress litigation; copyright registration and litigation; trade secret litigation; right of publicity counseling and litigation; and related unfair competition and antitrust matters in federal and state courts. He was elected president of the firm in 2006.

The Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA) was founded in 1997 to advocate for the expanded hiring, retention and promotion of minority attorneys in corporate law departments and the law firms that serve them.
