Nelson Mullins Riley and Scarborough attorneys Zoe Sanders Nettles and Anita Wallace Thomas were sworn in Tuesday as board members for the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) at the organization’s 107th annual meeting in New York City.

Both women have long service histories with the organization, with Ms. Nettles having served as its president. Earlier this year, Ms. Nettles, a partner in the Firm’s Columbia office, received NAWL’s 2005-2006 Service Award for her efforts to “move along the path that emphasizes professional development, a mission that unites women attorneys regardless of practice setting or political leanings.”

Ms. Thomas, a partner in the Firm’s Atlanta office, has previously served on the executive board. NAWL supports and advances the interests of women in and under the law and works toward the social, political, and professional empowerment of women. NAWL members work to end discrimination and violence against women and to prevent the erosion of hard-fought gains. NAWL's members include both men and women lawyers.

Ms. Thomas practices in litigation involving general commercial litigation, product liability, pharmaceutical litigation, employment litigation and toxic tort. She has served as trial counsel and MDL counsel in pharmaceutical and toxic tort cases across the country.

A member of the State Bar of Georgia and its Women and Minorities in the Profession Committee, Ms. Thomas also is a member of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys and its executive board, having served as association president in 2000. She also serves on the board for the National Association of Women Lawyers (2005-06). Active in civic affairs, Ms. Thomas is a member of the board of directors of the Southwest Atlanta YMCA and the board of directors of the Atlanta Women's Alliance. Additionally, she serves on the advisory board of the Atlanta Legal Aid Society.

Ms. Nettles began her law career in 1992 as a prosecutor where she tried 15 jury trials to verdict. Ms. Nettles joined Nelson Mullins in 1993. She practices administrative law and business litigation with an emphasis on class actions and pharmaceutical litigation. Ms. Nettles has experience with the management of class actions including motions practice and discovery.

Ms. Nettles is a former law clerk of U.S. District Judge Matthew J. Perry. She is also secretary of the South Carolina Supreme Court Historical Society and a member of the S.C. Administrative and Regulatory Law Association (board of directors) and the S.C. Association of Women Lawyers.

In 2004, Ms. Nettles received the Young Women In Industry (TWIN) award from the YWCA. In 2003, the Columbia Business Journal named Ms. Nettles to 20 Under 40, a listing of outstanding young leaders in the South Carolina Midlands. Ms. Nettles received an award from the National Association of Women Lawyers in 1999, for her service as chairwoman of the Rainmaking Committee and the creation of the first National Directory of Women Lawyers.
