Painesville City Manager, Rita McMahon, Honored by Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLP
Buckingham, Doolittle, & Burroughs, LLP recently honored Painesville City Manager, Rita McMahon, as a Stellar Performer. In her nomination, Rita was cited for her innovative and forward-thinking approach in leading the city of Painesville to new dimensions. Among her many contributions, Ms. McMahon was the architect that helped change police policy from arresting homeless individuals to providing them with a shelter. She also created a program that offered a free dinner pass at the shelter to anyone who donated to the Salvation Army. Those dinner cards could then be “paid forward” to someone in need. Under Ms. McMahon’s leadership, the City of Painesville received several honors including: 2004 Manny Award given by Inside Business Magazine to the Painesville Electric Plant for the commitment to Safety & Training Program; Governor’s Excellence Awards 2003 in Workers’ Compensation; and the Business Friendly Community by the Akron Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Cleveland Growth Association. Ohio Business Magazine also named the city as one of Ohio’s Top Growth Cities.

Ms. McMahon’s team commends her tough but fair-minded approach, says she is always available, not afraid to deal with issues head on, one who is on top of her game, and a person who makes things happen. In her acceptance speech, Ms. McMahon stated that the key to her style of leadership is listening and responding to the needs of others, her community, her city council, and her employees.

The law firm presented the award to Ms. McMahon in a luncheon ceremony held in its Cleveland office on June 7. Nick George, President and CEO of Buckingham, said, “Rita receives this award not because she has asked what a city can do for her, but instead, she has asked and answered what she can do for her city. She embodies all the characteristics of a stellar performer.”

Buckingham’s Stellar Performer Award recognizes business and community leaders exhibiting exemplary leadership in the cities where we have offices. Nominations for the award come from attorneys within Buckingham’s six offices, and the Board of Managers select the recipients. Buckingham typically honors one to three stellar performers each year in each of its six offices.
