Latour "LT" Lafferty elected President of the Brandon 86’ Rotary Club
Latour “L.T.” Lafferty, a shareholder with the law firm of Fowler White Boggs Banker, has been elected president of the Brandon 86’ Rotary Club for 2006 – 2007. At the installation banquet, Mr. Lafferty was presented with the “The Rotarian of the Year Award” by outgoing president, Earl Haugabook.

Dorsey & Whitney Continues Leading M&A Advisor Ranking Nationwide
Global law firm Dorsey & Whitney LLP ranked third among law firms nationwide for the number of domestic merger and acquisition (M&A) deals completed during the first six months of 2006, according to Thomson Financial, a provider of financial information and services. Dorsey completed 75 U.S. deals during the first half of the year.

Thomson ranked Dorsey 9th for the number of M&A deals completed worldwide.

Dorsey has ranked first, second or third in the number of domestic M&A deals completed annually since Thomson began publishing law firm league rankings in 1994.

""We continued to see robust M&A activity across all industry sectors in the first six months of the year,” said Matthew J. Knopf, a Dorsey Corporate/M&A partner in Minneapolis. “Our private equity firm clients have continued to be very active in the M&A marketplace, but we have also seen increasing participation from strategic buyers who have re-entered the field in force, seeking targeted acquisition opportunities.""

Thomson reported that U.S. M&A volume during the first six months of 2006 totaled $702 billion, compared with $569 billion recorded during the same period last year.

Patti Thompson and Elisabeth Woare Relocate to the Seattle Office of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP
The Seattle office of Davis Wright Tremaine LLP (DWT) is pleased to welcome Patti Thompson and Elisabeth Woare, who have relocated from the firm’s Bellevue office.

ThompsonThompson, a partner and member of the firm’s environmental practice, represents clients in business and real property transactions, with a particular emphasis and experience in transactions involving contaminated properties. She also counsels business and industrial clients on environmental compliance, permitting and enforcement matters, with particular emphasis in the areas of air quality, hazardous waste, and remediation of contaminated land.

Woare, an associate, focuses her practice on commercial leasing transactions for landlords and tenants as well as handling issues such as purchase, sale and exchange of commercial real estate. Prior to joining DWT, she worked as a legal extern for the King County Prosecutor’s Office as well as with a nonprofit, AIDS Housing of Washington.

Carlton Fields Shareholder, Sylvia H. Walbolt, Selected for "Women Trailblazers in the Law: Our Visions, Our Voices"
Carlton Fields Tampa Shareholder, Sylvia H. Walbolt, has been selected to provide an oral history for the Women Trailblazers in The Law: Our Vision, Our Voices program. This nationwide initiative is organized by the American Bar Association's Commission on Women in the Profession.

Tampa Shareholder, Gwynne A. Young, has been selected to interview Walbolt. Both Young and Tallahassee Shareholder, Kelly A. Cruz-Brown, recently participated in the project's intensive interviewer training program for conducting the interviews.

The Women Trailblazers project will involve audiotape-recording the oral histories of leading women private practitioners, government and public interest attorneys, judges, and legal academicians, and transcribing those interviews. Videotapes will also be made to preserve interviewees living images for posterity. In addition, the project will locate existing oral and video histories of leading women in the profession, and facilitate access to them.

Former Chair of the firm's Board of Directors and the Appellate Practice Group, Walbolt was recently recognized by the ABA Section of Litigation with the 2006 John Minor Wisdom Public Service and Professionalism Award for her pro bono work. She has extensive experience handling federal and state appeals in all areas including tort, products liability, commercial, constitutional and employment discrimination cases. Walbolt has appeared as counsel in almost 300 published opinions and she has also appeared on behalf of amici curiae in many appeals. Walbolt was listed as one of the Top 10 Women Litigators by the National Law Journal. She is board certified in Appellate Law, and is the former president of the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers. She is also a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. Walbolt received her B.A. from the University of Florida in 1961 and her J.D. from the University of Florida College of Law in 1963.

Young litigates a wide variety of corporate and business disputes, employment, probate, real estate, land use and environmental matters. She also serves as an arbitrator. Young received her B.A. from Duke University in 1971 and her J.D. from the University of Florida College of Law in 1974.

Cruz-Brown concentrates her practice primarily in the areas of insurance regulation and administrative law. She serves as the chair of the Firm's Women's Initiative Program. Cruz-Brown received her B.S., with honors, from Florida State University in 1989 and her J.D. from Florida State College of Law in 1992.

Bruce Pasfield Publishes Article in BNA’s Toxic Law Reporter
Last year, the EPA and OSHA embarked on a joint prosecution effort, termed the Worker Endangerment Initiative. In a recent article in the BNA Toxic Law Reporter, Bruce Pasfield discusses the implications of that effort and the recent prosecution of a pipe manufacturer under the initiative for conspiracy to defraud the two agencies. Bruce concludes that the verdict in that case could have far-reaching implications for businesses and environmental managers.
