America’s Top Health Litigators: Reed Smith
At the forefront of health law for more than 30 years, Reed Smith has a long-standing and integrated practice group that does not shy away from a complex case, but rather seizes upon the challenge.

The company has represented such embattled companies as HealthSouth Corp., which faced a slew of civil false claims and qui tam lawsuits alleging the company defrauded Medicare and other federal health care programs as the result of an accounting scheme that overstated earnings by approximately $2.6 billion.

The firm is pleased to announce that the Honorable Michael B. Mukasey, Chief Judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, will rejoin the firm as a partner in September 2006. Widely recognized as a leading jurist, Judge Mukasey has received a number of honors over the years, including the Federal Bar Council’s Learned Hand Medal for excellence in federal jurisprudence.

He left the firm as a partner in 1988 to serve on the bench. Over the past 18 years, Judge Mukasey has presided over thousands of cases, including such high profile trials as that of Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman and 11 co-defendants, who were charged with plotting to destroy a number of New York City landmarks. He also presided over major cases involving Holocaust survivor claims against insurers, the dispute between Larry Silverstein and his insurers concerning insurance proceeds related to the World Trade Center site and the Motion Picture Association of America’s ban on the distribution of new movies to critics and award panels, among many other notable cases.

Firm Chair Gregory L. Diskant stated, “Michael Mukasey is admired throughout the nation as a judge with impeccable legal judgment and unimpeachable integrity. Both the firm and our clients will benefit from his counsel. We are thrilled to welcome him back to Patterson Belknap.”

Upon re-joining Patterson Belknap, Judge Mukasey will become a member of the firm’s Litigation group. In particular, he will be active in the firm’s highly regarded investigations practice and provide advice on corporate governance matters and media industry disputes.
