L’Abbate, Balkan, Colavita & Contini, L.L.P. Partner Re-Elected To The Board of Long Island Home Builders Care, Inc. – Participates in New Home Project for Special Long Island Family
Jane Myers, Esq., a partner at L’Abbate, Balkan, Colavita & Contini, L.L.P. (Garden City, NY; New York, NY and Livingston, NJ), one of the nation’s leading full-service law firms, has been re-elected to the Board of the Long Island Home Builders Care, Inc., a 503(c) affiliate of the Long Island Builders Institute (LIBI). She also holds the positions of Vice President and Legal Counsel to the organization.

Most recently, Ms. Myers, who serves in the Business Transactions and Real Estate Practice Group at LBC&C, contributed her legal services relating to the construction of a new home to Lynn and Mark Grillo and their six-year old triplets: Richard, Mark and Olivia. The two-story home, which is located at the site of the family’s former house in Wantagh, was designed and built by the organization at no cost to accommodate the needs of Mark, who is severely disabled. Also donated were all the construction materials and brand new household appliances. It was St. Anne’s Hospital Counseling Services who first brought the Grillo’s situation to the attention of LIBI. The family now lives in a completed handicapped-accessible home courtesy of LIBI members and over 50 donors representing the region’s leading building and construction-related businesses, utilities, home equipment firms and retailers.

At the recent ribbon cutting-ceremony for the Grillo home, LIBI Executive Vice President Bob Wieboldt stated, “We at LIBI are pleased to present the Grillos with their new home in time for the holiday season. The members and staff of our organization who have worked so hard for this moment feel a special pride. We have been described by the Grillos as their ‘Angels,’ which rewards all of us for our contributions. A new home for the Grillos allows us to give something back to the community.

L’Abbate, Balkan, Colavita & Contini, L.L.P. Named AIA/CES Registered Provider
L’Abbate, Balkan, Colavita & Contini, L.L.P. (LBC&C, Garden City, NY; New York, NY and Livingston, NJ), one of the nation’s leading full-service law firms, announced that the Firm has become an AIA/CES (American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System) Registered Provider. The designation enables LBC&C to provide educational programs for Continuing Education “Learning Units” to the architectural community on curriculum approved by AIA National. To date, LBC&C has already provided continuing educational courses including one entitled, “How To Stay Out Of Your Lawyer’s Office,” which was held at the LBC&C Conference Center, and another entitled, “The Top Ten Contract Rules,” which was held on behalf of the Queens and Long Island AIA Chapters, as well as the New York State Society of Architects. To qualify as an AIA/CES Registered Provider, LBC&C had to satisfy certain criteria attesting to its strong qualifications and experience within the architectural field. Additionally, the Firm had to provide key references from AIA members.

In fact, LBC&C has a long and acclaimed history within the design community. The Firm has represented design professionals for two decades. The combined experience of its Design Professional Practice Group members exceeds 150 years. Donald L’Abbate, one of the Firm’s founding partners, has over 30 years experience representing architects and engineers in a wide range of matters from contract wording to complex litigation. In addition, he is a published author of articles in leading architectural and design trade publications, is a frequent lecturer and among the Firm’s members who authored an extensive report on the 1997/AIA Contract Documents. Mr. L’Abbate’s credentials earned him an honorary membership and AIA designation in the AIA, Queens Chapter of the New York State AIA. Under his direction, LBC&C has also been a long-time sponsor of the New York State AIA’s President’s Ball and participant at the Annual Meeting of Invited Attorneys, a national convention of lawyers who specialize in representing design professionals.

Douglas Pintauro, another senior partner and co-chair of LBC&C’s Design Professional Group, was also instrumental in gaining AIA/CES Registered Provider status for the Firm. Mr. Pintauro’s expertise and skills in diverse areas such as business practices and liability issues are in high demand by architectural firms and organizations. Additionally, he was a key advisor to the profession during the development of the New York City Department of Buildings’ self-certification program. His advice and counsel were also sought when the New York State Legislature enacted a special statute of limitations for design professionals. Further, he played a key role in the reorganizing of an AIA Chapter facing serious tax and legal issues and in the creation of the Design Professional Center.

Other members of the LBC&C Design Professional Practice Group also display a strong command of issues facing architects and the ability to communicate and educate effectively, both through published articles and various speaking engagements.

LBC&C will continue to provide AIA/CES curriculum both at the Firm’s Conference Center, as well as various offsite locations. In addition to the courses noted, other planned educational programs are in the process of being scheduled.

The group was formed with the joining of highly respected Estates and Trusts Attorney, Mark S. Charwat, and three of his colleagues.

According to LBC&C’s Co-Managing Partners Anthony P. Colavita and Richard P.
