James E. Huggett Joins Margolis Edelstein as a Partner in our Wilmington Office
James E. Huggett has joined Margolis Edelstein as a partner in the Wilmington office. Mr. Huggett comes to the firm from Harvey Pennington where he was the partner managing its Delaware office. Jim brings his bankruptcy practice, primarily representing corporate creditors and creditors' committees. The Margolis Edelstein Wilmington office, opened on July 1, 2004, now has two partners, two associates, and support staff, with additional hiring ongoing. The firm anticipates moving to larger Wilmington quarters within the next sixty days.

Cheryl Smith Fisher elected President-Elect of the Bar Association of Erie County
Cheryl Smith Fisher, a member of the firm, has been elected President-Elect of the Bar Association of Erie County. Ms. Fisher will serve as Vice President for the next year and in June of 2007 will become the third woman to head the 119-year-old organization. The BAEC is a not-for-profit professional membership organization with 3,700 members and is the largest bar association outside the metropolitan New York City area.

The Bar Association of Erie County provides a variety of services to its members, including continuing education programs, lectures and seminars. It also administers programs providing legal aid to the public, such as the Aid to Indigent Prisoners Society, Lawyer Referral Service, and the Volunteer Lawyers Project. Ms. Fisher has been an active member of the Association since beginning practice in 1977 and served as a director between 1996 and 1999. She is also a member of the Association's Professional Ethics Committee and is a past chair of the Committee.

At Magavern, Magavern & Grimm, Ms. Fisher concentrates her practice in commercial litigation and employment law. She has practiced law since 1977 after graduating cum laude from the University at Buffalo Law School and is a former Assistant U.S. District Attorney for Western New York. Ms. Fisher is also Chairperson of the Character and Fitness Committee for the Eighth Judicial District of the Fourth Department. She serves as Chair of the New York State Bar Association's Committee on Judicial Campaign Conduct and as a member of its Committee on Professional Ethics.

LGN Law Clerk Wins Burton Award for excellence in legal writing
Lockridge Grindal Nauen law clerk and University of Minnesota student David Leishman has won a Burton Award for Excellence in Legal Writing in recognition of his law review article entitled “Adding Insult to Injury: ERISA, Knudson, and the Error of the Possession Theory (89 Minn. L. Rev. 1214).”

“It was a pleasant surprise and quite an honor to know that others think so highly of my writing,” Leishman said. “I still feel that I have a long way to go and a lot to learn but the award is a great encouragement.”

Leishman, the second University of Minnesota student to receive a Burton award since its establishment in 1999, and 13 other law students will be recognized during the 2006 Burton Awards Program on June 12, 2006 at the Coolidge Auditorium in Washington, DC.

The Burton Foundation’s prestigious national awards program seeks to honor “partners in law firms and law school students who use plain, clear and concise language and avoid archaic, stilted legalese,” according to the Foundation’s web site.

The foundation was established by William C. Burton, who is a partner in the international law firm D’Amato& Lynch. Burton is also the author of Burton's Legal Thesaurus and an advocate of plain language and modernized legal writing. Visit http://www.burtonawards.com for more information.

WELL-KNOWN NEVADA LITIGATOR FRED D. “PETE” GIBSON III JOINS LIONEL SAWYER & COLLINS AS SHAREHOLDER
Lionel Sawyer & Collins is pleased to welcome Fred “Pete” Gibson as a shareholder and senior member of the Litigation Department of Lionel Sawyer & Collins.

Mr. Gibson is a former shareholder with the prestigious Nevada law firm of Hale Lane Peek Dennison and Howard. Mr. Gibson has significant experience representing clients in complex civil litigation, such as white collar criminal defense, Sarbanes-Oxley compliance, mining law litigation and complex business torts, First Amendment issues, and fraud disputes in both state and federal courts. Mr. Gibson comes from a pioneering Nevada family. The Gibson family has produced several prominent community leaders during its history in Nevada.

“We are very fortunate that Pete decided to come with our firm,” states Paul Hejmanowski, a litigation shareholder and the firm’s managing partner. “Pete had several options from other Nevada firms and national firms but elected to come with us.”

Upon graduation, Mr. Gibson was a law clerk for Nevada District Court Judge J. Charles Thompson. He served as a captain in the United States Army, Judge Advocate General’s Corps, and as an Assistant United States Attorney in the District of Nevada. In private practice since 1984, Mr. Gibson has tried numerous cases to verdict in both federal and state courts and acted as an associate general counsel for American Pacific Corporation (Nasdaq APFC).

He was president of American Pacific Corporation’s startup subsidiary engaged in the worldwide manufacture and distribution of chemical fire suppression products. He was also engaged as general manager for two professional sports franchises (Continental Indoor Soccer League and Arena Football League). He was elected president of the Arena Football League. More recently, Mr. Gibson has served, on a case-by-case basis, as a private prosecuting attorney for the Nevada Commission on Judicial Discipline.

Mr. Gibson received his Juris Doctor from the J. Reuben Clark School of Law, Brigham Young University (1976, Charter Class) and his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Arizona (1973). He has been an active member of the Nevada and California State Bars since 1977, and has been admitted to the District of Columbia Bar, along with numerous federal district courts and courts of appeal. Mr. Gibson is a member of the Las Vegas Rotary Club, and has acted as a community legal advisor for the Assistance League of Las Vegas since 1995.

Lionel Sawyer & Collins is pleased to welcome the return of Charles H. McCrea Jr. to the Litigation Department of Lionel Sawyer & Collins. Mr. McCrea has extensive experience representing clients in complex civil litigation, corporate law, commercial transactions, business law, and gaming law. Mr. McCrea was a Member of the Board of Trustees of the International Association of Gaming Attorneys from 1999-2003.

Following his career with Mikohn, Mr. McCrea was a shareholder in McCrea Martin Allison, Ltd. During the almost 20 years he was with Lionel Sawyer & Collins, he opened the firm’s Reno office and spent several years practicing in Reno.

George H. Singer Honored with Raeder Larson Public Service Award
In recognition of his pro bono efforts, the Bankruptcy Section of the Minnesota State Bar Association presented George H. Singer with its Raeder Larson Public Service Award. The award is given annually to an individual who provides exceptional service to the public through pro bono legal services and a demonstrated commitment to justice for all.

Singer routinely provides free legal assistance to non-profit organizations, businesses, individuals and families in need. He has demonstrated an ongoing dedication to community involvement and believes ""that public service is a matter of professional commitment and personal conscience.""

As a partner in the firm, Singer's practice focuses on corporate and commercial law. His pro bono work was also recognized through the Leonard E. Lindquist Pro Bono Award in 2004.

James Edward Charles Joins Firm's Jacksonville Office as an Associate
