Miller Canfield Adds Leading Lawyers to Real Estate and Litigation Practices
Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, P.L.C. announces it is adding two leading attorneys, one in litigation and one in real estate development, to its Ann Arbor office. Prominent litigator Thomas C. O’Brien joins the firm’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution Group as senior counsel after more than 30 years in private practice in Ann Arbor; and 30-year veteran real estate lawyer Stephen G. Palms rejoins the firm as senior counsel after a hiatus as executive vice president and general counsel of Ann Arbor-based real estate company, McKinley, Inc.

“With over 60 years’ combined experience, Tom O'Brien and Steve Palms bring extensive knowledge and legal experience to the firm,” said Thomas W. Linn, CEO of Miller Canfield. “Tom has substantial courtroom experience and a long-standing reputation for abundant trial skills and for winning civil litigation and white-collar crime cases. Steve has a total understanding of all aspects of real estate law and has successfully handled complex real estate transactions on behalf of many well-known companies around the country. Both are tremendous negotiators and client advocates.”

Most recently, O’Brien was the principal of O’Brien Law Firm, PLC in Ann Arbor where he focused on civil litigation and criminal defense. He is a senior faculty member of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy and a member of numerous professional organizations including the American Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan, Association of Trial Lawyers of America, and Washtenaw County Bar Association. He received his J.D. from University of Detroit Mercy School of Law, and his B.S. from Eastern Michigan University. He resides in Ann Arbor.

Palms practices commercial real estate law representing owners, developers, lenders, and tenants in all aspects of office, retail, light industrial and residential projects. He first joined the firm in 1976 and left in 2004 to join McKinley. He is a member of the American Bar Association, State Bar of Michigan and Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, chairs the board of directors of the Oakland Community College Foundation and is a member of the executive board of the Boy Scouts of America, Detroit Area Council. He received his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School, magna cum laude, and received an A.B., with honors in history, from the University of Michigan. He resides in Ann Arbor.

The 350-attorney law firm of Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, P.L.C. was established in Detroit in 1852 and has offices in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Grand Rapids, Howell, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Monroe, Saginaw, and Troy, Michigan. Other offices are located in New York City, Naples and Pensacola, Florida, Windsor, Ontario, and in Gdynia, Warsaw, and Wroclaw, Poland.

Hogan & Hartson Advises Host Hotels in its Acquisition of Hotel Arts Barcelona
Lawyers with the Washington, D.C. office of Hogan & Hartson LLP are representing Host Hotels & Resorts, Inc. in its role as general partner of a joint venture purchasing Hotel Arts Barcelona, a Ritz-Carlton hotel on the beachfront in downtown Barcelona, Spain. The firm is serving as U.S. acquisition counsel in this transaction.

A subsidiary of Host Hotels, acting as general partner for a Netherlands joint venture with Stichting Pensioenfonds ABP, the Dutch pension fund, and Jasmine Hotels Pte Ltd, an affiliate of GIC Real Estate Pte Ltd, the real estate investment company of the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation Pte Ltd, has entered into an agreement for the purchase of the hotel, which contains 483 luxury guestrooms, including 28 luxury duplex apartments. The hotel recently underwent a comprehensive guestroom renovation that was completed in June 2006. The transaction also includes the purchase of an approximate 80,000 square-foot casino that is leased to a third-party operator.

The purchase price for the property is approximately €417 million, including the assumption of €280 million of debt. The purchase, subject to customary closing conditions, is expected to close in August.

Yoav M. Griver Joins ZEK as Partner
Yoav Michael Griver has joined the law firm of ZEK as a Partner. He will practice in the firm’s commercial/financial litigation area.

Griver joins the firm from Weil, Gotshal & Manges where he was a Litigation Counsel to the Trade Practices and Regulatory Law group concentrating on complex litigation matters in both state and federal courts. Griver has litigated commercial and intellectual property matters for clients in the banking, commercial and consumer credit, transportation, computer software and electronic industries.

Griver, who received his J.D. with honors from the University of Texas School of Law and a B.A. with honors from the University of Texas, resides with his wife in Manhattan.

Tracee Davis Named to State Bar Association's House of Delegates
ZEK Senior Associate Tracee E. Davis has been appointed to the House of Delegates of the New York State Bar Association. The House of Delegates is the association's policymaking body. Tracee is one of 12 new delegates selected statewide as part of a plan to increase minority leadership in the organization.

Wyche, Burgess, Freeman & Parham, P.A. law firm announced today that Melinda Davis Lux and Terrell W. Mills have been named members of the firm

Melinda Davis Lux joined the Wyche firm in 2002 as an Associate and concentrates her practice in Mergers and Acquisitions, Securities and Corporate law. Ms. Davis Lux earned her law degree from Yale University in 1998, then served as Law Clerk to the Honorable Alexander B. Denson, U. S. District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina 1998-99. She was formerly an Associate at Kilpatrick Stockton, LLP in Winston- Salem, North Carolina, 1999-2002. Ms Davis Lux is a 1995 summa cum laude graduate of Wellesley College, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She earned her M.B.A. in 2006 from Clemson University (Evening Program) and is a member of Beta Kappa Sigma.

Terrell W. Mills concentrates his law practice in the areas of Technology, Intellectual Property and Corporate Mergers and Acquisitions. Mr. Mills received his engineering degree with honors from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1988. As a Management Consultant for seven years, he specialized in software design, development, implementation and integration. He earned his law degree from the University of Richmond Law School, graduating first in his class magna cum laude in 1999. He was an Associate at McCandlish Kaine, P.C. in Virginia for a year before joining the Wyche firm in 2000. Mr. Mills is a graduate of Leadership Greenville Class 30.
