Mark H. Remus of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione Named One of “40 Under Forty” Illinois Attorneys to Watch
Mark H. Remus, a shareholder at Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the U.S., has been named to Law Bulletin Publishing Company's 2006 ""40 Under Forty"" list of attorneys to watch for Illinois.

""Mark is always well-prepared and conscientious. He has a pleasant demeanor with witnesses and opposing counsel, but is tough when the situation requires it,"" according to David Schatz, in-house intellectual property counsel for ESCO Technologies, the parent company of Filtertek, one of Remus' long time clients. Remus has represented Filtertek on several patent litigation matters with speedy and successful results.

""We are very proud of Mark's outstanding contributions to the intellectual property field and to our firm, and his service to the Chicago community,"" said Gary M. Ropski, president of Brinks.

Remus, who joined Brinks in 1997, has litigated patent, trade secret and unfair competition cases in multiple jurisdictions. His cases have involved mechanical, chemical and electrical technologies. His experience includes jury trials, appellate practice and alternative dispute resolution.

Remus received his J.D. degree, cum laude, from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1997 and his B.S. degree, with distinction, in Chemical Engineering from the University of Illinois in 1994. He is a member of the American Bar Association (Intellectual Property Law and Litigation Sections), the American Intellectual Property Law Association, the Federal Circuit Bar Association, the Intellectual Property Law Association of Chicago and the Intellectual Property Owners Association. He has served as a mentor for the Boys and Girls Club of Chicago and is a volunteer at a local food pantry.

Remus is the third consecutive Brinks attorney to be selected for the ""40 Under Forty"" list, joining fellow shareholders, Michael Chu (2005) and Meredith Martin Addy (2004).

The editors at Law Bulletin Publishing, publishers of the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin, Chicago Lawyer and other publications serving the legal, business and real estate industries, reviewed hundreds of nominations for the list. The committee considers the nominees' career achievements, successful verdicts and settlements, how far the nominees have risen in their fields, recommendations from their peers and adversaries and their contributions to their respective communities. This is the seventh annual edition of ""40 Under Forty.

Ignorance of IT Minutiae No Excuse for Litigators
In the July 17, 2006 issue of the National Law Journal, Baker Botts Special Counsel Carolyn Southerland discusses amendments to Rule 26 (f) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and how they are ""going to profoundly affect parties' discussions in 'meet and confer' discussions concerning discovery.""

""For luddite lawyers,"" Southerland writes in her article on the topic, ""these rule changes will require that they venture into a world that they dislike and perhaps on some level fear. But just as lawyers have survived past changes in the rules, they will survive these, too, and their clients and practices may well be better for it.
