White Collar Criminal Defense Team to be Primary Counsel in Major Internet Pharmacy Case
Steven Ungar and Bob Calo, with assistance from Peter Hawkes and paralegal Beverly Harmon, are representing an Internet marketing consultant in what the U.S. Department of Justice is calling the largest illegal Internet pharmacy prosecution brought to date. The client, along with 17 other defendants, is charged with RICO, money laundering and mail and wire fraud in a 313 count indictment filed by federal prosecutors in San Diego.

Helios Investment Partners in the $1.2 Billion African Telecommunications Joint Venture
Cleary Gottlieb represented Helios Investment Partners in the acquisition of a 22% stake in a joint venture vehicle established by Portugal Telecom to hold all of its telecommunications assets and interests in sub-Saharan Africa. The joint venture is valued at US$1.2 billion and the deal closed on August 13.

The joint venture represents a significant investment by Helios and its coinvestment partners in the region, and is an important strategic maneuver for Portugal Telecom. Through the joint venture the parties intend to develop a unified, coherent multi-strategy telecommunications services provider capable of operating throughout sub-Saharan Africa by combining Portugal Telecoms' broad operational experience with Helios' financial expertise and its extensive knowledge of, and contacts in, the region.

Helios is a London-based investment firm which focusses on making private equity investments in sub-Saharan Africa. Cleary Gottlieb has assisted Helios with the establishment of its initial investment fund, and has also assisted Helios with a previous investment. Portugal Telecom is an international telecommunications company with businesses and assets in Europe, Africa and South America. It is listed in New York and Lisbon and is the largest public company in Portugal.

Aleka Eisentraut Joins Wendel Rosen
Wendel, Rosen, Black & Dean LLP adds seasoned associate Aleka Skouras Eisentraut to its real estate practice. Eisentraut brings nearly 10 years experience in both law firm and in-house settings.

“We could not be happier to add another strong attorney to our stellar real estate team,” said Howard Lind, managing partner for Wendel Rosen. “Aleka has represented a range of clients in all manner of real estate matters, including green building, which is booming throughout the region and is among our own ‘green’ firm’s hallmarks. In addition, her time in-house gives her a perspective that is valuable for our firm and our clients.”

Eisentraut represents private companies and individuals through real estate acquisitions, options and dispositions, as well as with the development and leasing of commercial, residential and mixed-use properties. She advises clients in partnering with redevelopment agencies and through green building and LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification. With experience in land use law, Eisentraut also has represented clients in connection with proposed general plan amendments and established conservation easements, including operation and management agreements with third party non-profits, as mitigation for private development. Prior to joining Wendel Rosen, Eisentraut was with the firm of K&L Gates (formerly Preston Gates & Ellis) and served as assistant general counsel for a Northern California home builder.

Eisentraut earned her J.D. from the University of California, Davis School of Law (1996) and a B.A. in American History from Barnard College in New York (1990).

Graham Hill Elected Secretary/Treasurer of Prestigious Barrister Society
Graham Hill, the head of Litigation for Locke Liddell & Sapp’s Houston office, has been elected Secretary/Treasury of the elite and highly regarded International Society of Barristers. The ISOB is an organization of trial lawyers with a limited membership who are found to be “outstanding in the field of advocacy.” A well-known litigator, Hill has been a member of the ISOB since 1989 and is the only Texan presently serving on the Board of Governors.

A long-time Houston attorney, Hill has established a reputation for excellence in personal injury, wrongful death, class action, and commercial litigation. A former chairman of the Houston Bar Association’s Litigation Committee, he is board certified in Personal Injury Trial Law and also is a member of the American College of Trail Lawyers and the American Board of Trial Advocates. Hill has served as Special State Court Counsel for the $1 billion Sulzer Orthopedics class action settlement arising out of the recall of 46,000 defective hip implants and tried the only Sulzer case presented to a jury. He also tried the first “fen-phen” case. He is a graduate of Southern Methodist University School of Law, with a Master’s and undergraduate degree from the University of Texas.

The International Society of Barristers is an honor society of trial lawyers chosen by their peers on the basis of excellence and integrity in advocacy, without regard to client affiliation. It seeks to preserve trial by jury, the adversary system, and independence of the judiciary.

Day Pitney Adds Seasoned Veteran Robert Wrobel as Counsel
Day Pitney LLP, a leading full-service law firm with offices in Boston, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, and Washington D.C., announced today that it has welcomed Robert Wrobel to the position of counsel in the firm’s Stamford office. Wrobel will be a member of the Corporate and Business Law and Financial Services Departments and will focus his practice on domestic and international mergers, acquisitions and finance transactions.

With experience in Asia, South America, Australia and Europe, Wrobel has acted as lead negotiator on numerous transactions, including private and public mergers and acquisition transactions, joint ventures, licensing arrangements and other product marketing and manufacturing agreements.

“Bob is a natural fit for Day Pitney and we are thrilled to have him join the firm,” said James Sicilian, co-chair of Day Pitney’s executive committee. “Bob has tremendous experience in the international arena that will benefit our clients including those with an established international presence as well as those just embarking on building global businesses. Prior to joining the firm, Wrobel served as executive vice president and general counsel to Alpharma Inc., a leading specialty pharmaceutical company. Wrobel has more than 30 years of experience as general counsel, including 10 years with Alpharma, where he was lead negotiate or on numerous multi-million dollar transactions. Wrobel also served as vice president and associate general counsel at Duracell International Inc. and senior vice president, general counsel and chief administrative office of The Marley Company, a manufacturer of heating, cooling and other engineered products.

Wrobel earned both his undergraduate degree and his J.D. from University of Illinois and is admitted to the Bars of Connecticut, Kansas and Missouri. Mr. Wrobel is a member of the American Bar Association. He currently lives in Wilton with his wife, Patti.

Jean Gordon Carter Named One of Triangle Business Journal's Top "Women in Business"
Hunton & Williams LLP today announced that Jean Gordon Carter, a partner with Hunton & Williams' Raleigh office, was named to the Triangle Business Journal "Women in Business" list. The awards are presented annually to honor excellence and leadership exhibited by the Triangle’s top businesswomen. Carter was honored as one of 26 Triangle-area female executives who have displayed exemplary leadership in business. Winners were recognized at an awards luncheon on August 9 at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel in Research Triangle Park, N.C.

"I am honored to receive this prestigious award by the Triangle Business Journal,” says Carter. “I am privileged to be named as one of this year's 'Women in Business,' and to be listed in the company of extraordinarily talented women leaders throughout the Triangle."

Carter's practice focuses on federal, state and local tax and tax-exempt matters and estate planning and administration. She has been admitted to the prestigious American College of Trusts and Estates Counsel. Locally, she is the former president of the Wake County Estate Planning Council and former chair of the North Carolina Bar Association’s statewide Multidisciplinary Practice Task Force and its Estates Section. Carter currently serves on the board of governors for the North Carolina Bar Association. She is also on the Duke University Estate Planning Council and the Duke Law School Low Income Tax Clinic Advisory Council.

In addition to her work with the firm, Carter is also very involved in the community. Over the years, she has served on numerous boards such as the Triangle Community Foundation, Capital Area Soccer League, Ravenscroft School, Pines of Carolinas Girl Scout Council, Wake Teen Medical Services and the Lucy Daniels Center for Early Childhood.

Phillips Lytle LLP Partner Lisa McDougall Co-Authors The New York State Physician’s HIPAA Privacy Manual
Lisa McDougall, an attorney with Phillips Lytle LLP, a full service law firm with statewide coverage, has co-authored The New York State Physician’s HIPAA Privacy Manual. Co-sponsored by the New York State Bar Association’s Health Law Section and the Committee on Continuing Legal Education and co-authored by attorney Christopher R. Viney, the Manual is designed to be a “hands-on” tool for health care providers as well as their legal counsel. It is now available to New York State physicians’ offices and counsel.

The Manual consists of thirty-six policies and procedures as well as the corresponding forms needed to implement those policies and procedures. In addition, the Manual provides dayto- day guidance necessary to allow the physician’s office to respond to routine, everyday inquiries about protected health information as well as the framework to enable the health care provider’s counsel to properly respond to non-routine issues. It is also organized so that it parallels various aspects of the HIPAA Privacy Rule – covering areas that include General Policies, Uses and Disclosures of Medical Information without Patient Authorization, Operational Issues and Patient Rights.

With more than 10 years of health care law experience, Ms. McDougall has represented a variety of clients including hospitals, physicians, nursing homes and various not-for-profit organizations with a mental health focus and health care consumers. At Phillips Lytle, she is the coordinator of the firm’s Health Care practice group and focuses on health care matters, including HIPAA, compliance issues, fraud and abuse, medical records and information management. Ms. McDougall received her J.D. from University at Buffalo Law School – The State University of New York and her B.A., cum laude, from University at Buffalo.

In addition, she is the chair of the Health Care Law Committee of the Erie County Bar Association, the co-chair of the Women Physicians and Attorneys’ Task Force, a member of the Health Care Law and Elder Law Sections of the New York State Bar Association and the American Health Lawyers Association.
