McGuireWoods Recognized by Working Mother Magazine as a Best Law Firm For Women
McGuireWoods LLP was named a “2007 Working Mother & Flex Time Lawyers Best Law Firms for Women.” The inaugural list honors the 50 winning law firms for their commitment to the retention and advancement of female talent, which was published in the August/September issue of Working Mother magazine, a popular magazine for career mothers.

Flex-Time Lawyers LLC, a national consulting firm advising attorneys and legal employers on work-life balance and the retention and advancement of women, partnered with Working Mother to survey law firms and select the 50 best. To apply for “Best Law Firms for Women,” McGuireWoods provided detailed information on issues that are most important to the retention and promotion of women lawyers in six measured areas: workforce profile; benefits and compensation; parental leave; childcare; flexibility; and retention and advancement of women.

“We try hard to find innovative ways to help our women lawyers and their families meet the incredible demands they face on a daily basis,” said McGuireWoods Chairman Richard Cullen. “We are pleased as a firm to be recognized, but it is our women lawyers who really deserve all the credit.”

This year, as part of its commitment to women lawyers, McGuireWoods announced two new policies to support them. The firm now offers one of the most flexible parental leave policies in the legal community, in which associates are able to take up to one year off and return at their same level and pay. The law firm also rolled out a new part-time policy, in which a lawyer can work a reduced schedule of up to 60 percent of a full-time work schedule, while remaining on their respective partnership track.

“I commend McGuireWoods for taking a lead for women lawyers,” said Carol Evans, chief executive officer, Working Mother Media. “Since its founding, Working Mother magazine has been the champion of progressive, women-friendly changes in the workplace. We are excited to note and celebrate the changes in the legal industry, which historically has struggled to support women and their life choices.”

The complete list of the 2007 Working Mother & Flex-time Best Law Firms for Women can be found in the August/September issue of Working Mother magazine on newsstands August 14 and at www.workingmother.com.

Fulbright Names New Co-Head of International Arbitration Practice
Fulbright & Jaworski has named London partner David J. Howell as the co-head of the global firm's leading international arbitration and alternative dispute resolution practice group.

Howell has more than 25 years experience as an advocate and counsel in substantial international, commercial, investment, construction and engineering disputes. He will co-head the 30-lawyer practice group with Fulbright partner Mark Baker.

"Our thriving international arbitration practice has served clients across the globe in all types of international arbitration matters," said Steven B. Pfeiffer, the Chair of Fulbright's Executive Committee. "David, like Mark, is regularly sought out to handle arbitrations before a variety of the world's arbitral bodies, ranging from the London Court of International Arbitration to the Singapore International Arbitration Centre. David is an outstanding arbitrator and a proven leader."

Fulbright's international arbitration and alternative dispute resolution lawyers have handled arbitrations including issues surrounding the termination of power plant projects in South Asia, the deliveries of crude oil from Russia, road construction projects in Africa, and the expropriation of property in Asia and Latin America.

The practice has been recognized by Chambers & Partners, Practical Law Company, the International Bar Association, the National Law Journal and American Lawyer, which recently ranked Fulbright's international arbitration practice among the top ten global firms rated in its Arbitration Scorecard.

"Following a definite game plan of tightening an already powerful grip on the oil, gas and energy market, the firm has also seen its expertise segue into other related sectors," Chambers USA's researchers wrote in their guide to America's Leading Lawyers for Business about Fulbright's international arbitration practice.

The researchers went on to call Fulbright's practice group "an impressively deep, multinational team" and referred to Baker as "clearly a member of the inner circle of international arbitration." Fulbright partner Kevin O'Gorman is described by the publication as "a smart and meticulous researcher whose client skills and connections within the arbitration community make him an extremely well-rounded attorney."

When not traveling to handle arbitrations for clients worldwide, Baker works in the firm's Houston office. Baker says arbitration, once widely used in maritime and construction disputes, has now become how most international transactions and project disputes are settled.

"Parties are choosing arbitration to avoid litigation in a unfamiliar, less developed, or unpredictable judicial systems," he said. "It also gives parties the added certainty of enforcing in another country the tribunal's decision."

Howell, who has practiced in London, Dubai and Singapore, said that while there is an increasing convergence in international arbitration law and practice, a knowledge and a sensitivity to local legal and cultural issues are essential.

"At Fulbright, we are experienced in both," he said. "We are familiar with the treaties and the arbitral law framework within which international arbitrations are conducted. We also offer an extensive knowledge of the relevant aspects of local legal systems and arbitration laws and employ them for the benefit of our clients."

With a strategic network of locations in the U.S., Europe, Middle East and Asia, Fulbright attorneys have represented clients before the London Court of International Arbitration, the International Chamber of Commerce in Paris, the American Arbitration Association, the International Centre for Settlement Investment Disputes at the World Bank, the Inter-American Commercial Arbitration Commission, The Cairo Regional Centre for International Commercial Arbitration, The Singapore International Arbitration Centre, the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre and under the ad hoc rules of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law and the Center for Public Resources.

"From London to Houston and New York to Hong Kong, we have an experienced and strong international arbitration team that advises clients worldwide on the arbitral panels and issues involved in these delicate matters," Baker said. "We know how to get solutions when it comes to arbitrating the complex issues international companies face today."

Dorsey & Whitney Named To List Of 'Best Law Firms For Women'
Global law firm Dorsey & Whitney has been selected by Working Mother magazine as one of the nation’s 50 “Best Law Firms For Women.” The magazine’s inaugural law firm evaluation, based on policies, programs and achievements in diversity and work/life balance for women attorneys, appears in the August/September issue available today.

Law firms, in general, are criticized for discouraging balance between work and life outside of work – for both men and women. Dorsey Managing Partner Marianne Short says attention focused on enabling work/life balance and improving the experience of female attorneys “can benefit the entire profession, and recast the definition of a competent lawyer.”

In January 2007, Short became the first woman to head the 95-year-old Minneapolis-based firm. She is one of only five women in the country leading a top-100 law practice. Among the 50 firms on the Working Mother list, Dorsey is the only top-100 firm with a woman attorney in the highest leadership position.

”Certainly, female attorneys face unique stresses and challenges,” said Short. “But being a mother and building or maintaining a rewarding law career can be compatible aspirations. Quality work and client service are the foundations of a successful legal practice. Finding work/life balance does not compromise quality or client service; it does not mean less work. But it requires a commitment by the individual and the firm to do things differently.”

Dorsey has implemented multiple programs and policies that enable work/life balance and appeal to working parents. Initiatives that help attract, engage, retain and develop women attorneys include:

* Parental Leave. The Dorsey Parental Leave Policy provides attorneys the option to take up to six months of leave following the birth or adoption of a child.
* Flexible Work Arrangements. Non-traditional work arrangements include reduced-hours work schedules, compressed workweeks and telecommuting.
* Childcare Subsidies. Dorsey subsidizes, in locations where the firm has agreements with a drop-in childcare provider, the cost of 20 days of back-up childcare per child, per year.
* Continuing Legal Education. Dorsey work-life balance courses have included “Zen and the Art of Remote Access,” and “Work/Life Balance: the Fragile Juggling Act.”

Recognition by Working Mother also is based, in part, on the prevalence of women attorneys with leadership accountability. At Dorsey, in addition to Marianne Short in the managing partner role, the firm’s general counsel position is held by Suzanne Van Dyk, and three female partners sit on the firm’s board of directors. Women attorneys manage two Dorsey offices, and female partners head several of the firm’s law practices. Additionally, women partners chair or co-chair the firm-wide recruiting and diversity initiatives.
