Blackwell Sanders named 2007 Working Mother and Flex-Time Lawyers Best Law Firm for Women
Working Mother magazine, the authoritative source for career mothers, and Flex-Time Lawyers LLC, a national consulting firm advising attorneys and legal employers on work-life balance and the retention and advancement of women, have named Blackwell Sanders LLP a 2007 Working Mother & Flex-Time Lawyers Best Law Firm for Women. A new initiative from the leading advocates for work-life balance and women-friendly policies, Best Law Firms for Women honors 50 winning firms nationwide for their commitment to the retention and advancement of female talent.

A downloadable PDF of the award notice may be viewed by clicking here: http://www.parsintl.com/14789.pdf.

“Blackwell Sanders provides an environment where, as long as the clients’ needs are being met, there’s flexibility to have a life; you don’t have to be here all the time,” says Kansas City Blackwell Sanders partner Kirstin Salzman. “I have the support of the firm to be a good mom and wife, but also to be a good community citizen. I’m on the board of directors of DeLaSalle Educational Center – an inner-city center providing education for at-risk youth. The firm is supportive of my taking time to attend board meetings, they provide financial support to the Center, and it’s not unusual for me to ask a legal question of one of my peers regarding DeLaSalle.”

"I, as well as my family, appreciate the firm's focus on work-life balance," says St. Louis Blackwell Sanders associate Rebecca Kujawa. "I am able to serve my client's interests while maintaining a life outside of work, including my volunteer position with the Foster & Adoptive Care Coalition. I can have a career and still have time for my family. Blackwell Sanders has figured out the importance of supporting a work-life balance to retain employees and to create an overall more successful environment."

Profiled in the August/September issue of Working Mother magazine, Blackwell Sanders is honored for creating a work environment that is hospitable to and encouraging of the advancement of women. With innovative programs and policies that help female attorneys achieve balance in their personal and professional lives and thrive as practitioners, Blackwell Sanders is ensuring that women are the future of private law practice.

“At Blackwell Sanders, we’ve learned it’s not either/or,” says Dave Fenley, firm chairman. “Contrary to popular opinion, you’re not either a great workplace or a great law firm. We’ve achieved both, and each contributes to the other.”

One of the firm’s most unique contributions to its women attorneys is its True North program. Founded in 2004, the program’s goal is to promote professional networking and development of the firm’s female attorneys and female clients. Client contacts are high-level decision-makers; program content is shaped around their needs and requests. The combination of thematic, content-rich programs and socializing opportunities provides a full-circle approach to retaining, recruiting, and enriching the lives of the firm’s female attorneys, as well as enrichment for clients.

Blackwell Sanders’ commitment to developing and maintaining an inclusive work environment has not compromised the quality of its legal services to clients. In fact, it has made it even better as demonstrated by some of the recognitions that Blackwell Sanders attorneys have received in the last 18 months.

Baker & Daniels Among “Best Law Firms for Women”
Working Mother magazine has named Baker & Daniels LLP to its “Best Law Firms for Women” list, which appears in the August/September 2007 issue.

“We’re honored that our commitment to a family-friendly, flexible work environment has been recognized by such a respected organization,” said Brian K. Burke, CEO and chairman of Baker & Daniels. “Working mothers are an asset to our workforce, and we’re committed to helping them succeed both personally and professionally.”

Working Mother and Flex-Time Lawyers LLC (a national consulting firm advising law firms) conducted the inaugural survey, collecting 2006 data from law firms with 50 or more lawyers. Firms provided information about female representation, women’s initiatives, workplace culture, flexibility, compensation, advancement and more.

Baker & Daniels – a law firm with offices in Indianapolis, South Bend, Elkhart, Fort Wayne, Washington D.C. and China – reports that 17 percent of its lawyers are mothers. The firm offers flex time, reduced hours, full-time work-at-home options, telecommuting and a three-month paid maternity leave for biological and adoptive parents. In addition, Baker & Daniels' reduced-hours program allows attorneys to work less than full time and earn partnership credit.

Ellen Boshkoff, a partner who leads the firm’s employment litigation practice group and has served in several firm-wide leadership positions, helped implement the policy. Since the firm had no specific guidelines for working less than full time when Boshkoff requested it, she proposed and negotiated an arrangement that would become the formalized reduced-hours program.

“At the time there were very few lawyers working less than full time, and most of them worked on specified days during the week," Boshkoff said. "I asked for a different arrangement, which was simply a reduction in billable hour goals. We now have a formal reduced-hours policy, which allows for pro rata compensation and partnership credit for qualifying associates.”

The policy, fully endorsed by the firm’s leadership, is also a key recruiting tool.

“Our programs take a realistic and long-term view of a professional’s life,” said Baker & Daniels partner Francina A. Dlouhy, a member of the firm’s management team and team leader of the firm’s state and local tax practice group. “We recognize that there are many stages in one’s life and that during some of those stages more flexibility is needed than at others.

"We also recognize that a talented professional will want to continue to develop her skills and expand her practice even though she has increased demands on her time due to personal obligations," Dlouhy added.
