Nixon Peabody is recognized for advancing a workplace of equality; Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley honors law firm with Equality Leadership Award
Rochester, New York. Nixon Peabody LLP is being recognized for advancing equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals in the workplace. On Friday, October 20, the firm is being presented with the Business Leadership Award from the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley at the 2006 Equality Leadership Conference in Rochester. This award follows the firm’s recent national recognition for its efforts on behalf of its LGBT employees. In September, the firm received the highest rating—100 percent—and national recognition from the Human Rights Campaign in its annual Corporate Equality Index on workplace equality for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender employees.

Bill Simpson, director of human resources at Nixon Peabody and a member of the firm’s Diversity Action Committee, said, “Creating an environment where all employees can flourish offers many benefits, from increasing employee satisfaction, which contributes to client satisfaction and financial results, to providing an advantage in recruiting and retaining top talent. Nixon Peabody has long focused on implementing innovative human resources practices for the benefit of our attorneys and personnel everywhere. We are thrilled to be honored by the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley, and to celebrate this important honor with the local community.”

Maggie Clemens, a Labor and Employment partner at Nixon Peabody who is also a member of the firm’s Diversity Action Committee, said, “On behalf of the attorneys and personnel at Nixon Peabody, we thank the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley for recognizing the firm’s commitment to diversity and inclusiveness. By honoring Nixon Peabody with a Gay Alliance Leadership Award, the Gay Alliance of the Genesee Valley is recognizing our commitment to creating a workplace second to none.”

The Gay Alliance Leadership Awards honor individuals and organizations who lead the way in advancing equality for LGBT individuals in the Greater Rochester area. The awards are presented annually at the Gay Alliance’s Equality Leadership Conference.
Nixon Peabody is receiving the Business Leadership Award, presented by Eastman Kodak. This award recognizes a business employer who has made significant strides in advancing a fair and equitable workplace for its LGBT employees, and providing corporate leadership on behalf of the LGBT community at large over the past year.

Recipients of the other Equality Leadership Awards include New York State Senator Joseph Robach, Community Leadership, and Christine Carrie Fien, Outshine Media Award.

47 Attorneys Named to Best Lawyers in America 2007
Forty-seven attorneys from McAfee & Taft, Oklahoma City’s largest law firm, were recently selected by their peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America® 2007. Since the last edition was published, seven McAfee & Taft lawyers have been named to the prestigious list for the first time.

Published biennially since 1983, The Best Lawyers in America is widely regarded as the preeminent referral guide to the legal profession in the United States. Because Best Lawyers is based on an exhaustive peer-review survey in which thousands of the top attorneys throughout the country cast more than 1.8 million votes on the legal abilities of other lawyers in their specialties, and because lawyers are not required or allowed to pay a fee to be listed, inclusion is considered a singular honor.

White Collar Criminal Defense Lawyer Whitney Ellerman Joins Firm
Hunton & Williams LLP today announced the expansion of its firmwide litigation practice with the addition of Whitney C. Ellerman, as partner, in its Washington, DC office. He joins the law firm’s white collar criminal defense and special investigations practice. Most recently with Janis, Schuelke & Wechsler, he has served both as a federal prosecutor and in private practice.

“Whitney has a tremendous reputation in the local bar,” said Wally Martinez, managing partner of Hunton & Williams. “The fact that Whitney has been both a private practice lawyer and a federal prosecutor provides him an in-depth understanding of the challenges facing our clients.”

“As a former federal prosecutor, Whitney has a strong referral network and a reputation for handling investigations,” added Tom Slater, who heads the litigation, intellectual property and antitrust practices of Hunton & Williams firmwide. “He will work closely with Ken Bell’s group, which joined the firm three months ago, to further broaden our white collar defense practice in Washington.”

Ellerman received his undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Virginia. Following his graduation from law school, where he was the Special Projects Editor of the Virginia Law Review, Mr. Ellerman worked as an associate at Latham & Watkins and at Wiley, Rein & Fielding. Ellerman then joined Janis, Schuelke & Wechsler, left to become an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, and later rejoined that firm. He is admitted to practice in Virginia and the District of Columbia.

The white collar and special investigations practice at Hunton & Williams covers a broad spectrum of matters: assisting our clients with regulatory and compliance-related issues, civil and criminal enforcement actions by federal and state governments, and internal and external investigations.
