Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP to Host Korean American Bar Association of Chicago
International law firm Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw welcomes the Korean American Bar Association of Chicago (KABA) as they introduce their new Officers and Board members at a reception and ceremony on October 26, 2006.

"We're proud to host the KABA Installment Ceremony," said David T. Shin, a Corporate and Securities Associate at Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw and KABA board member. "During the last several years, the firm has made significant progress in the development and advancement of its diverse attorneys, including Asian Americans. Supporting organizations like KABA is important in attracting and retaining talented minority lawyers, and it's a great way of showing our genuine commitment to diversity across the board."

Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw LLP has undertaken an array of efforts designed to help foster the careers of their diverse lawyers, including the creation of a formal diversity committee, the organization of annual national diversity retreats, an increased focus on professional development and mentoring, collaborative minority awareness programs with high schools and colleges, and a greater consideration of minority hiring and staffing as a factor in compensation.

There are currently 228 associates in the firm's Chicago office and 49 or 21.5% are minorities. Of those, 22 are Asian Americans making up about 45% of our minority population.

Other Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw lawyers who are KABA members include Casarine H. Chong, Jeanny Haw, Hyun-Jung Kim, Mina Kim and Chae U. Yi. These talented associates help represent the best of the firm's Corporate and Securities, Information Technology and Outsourcing, and Finance practice groups.

The Installment Ceremony begins at 6pm, with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, followed by a welcome from Julian D'Esposito, Partner-in-Charge of Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw's Chicago Office, and the swearing in of new Officers and Board members by the Honorable William D. Maddux. Justin C. Choi, Senior Vice President and General Counsel for Andrew Corporation, will give the keynote address.

KABA was founded in 1993 and it is comprised of more than 150 attorneys and law students in Chicago. The primary objectives of KABA are to promote the professional growth of Korean-American lawyers and law students in the area; to foster the exchange of ideas and information between its members, the legal profession, the judiciary and the community; and to develop and encourage cooperation with other organizations of minority attorneys and community organizations on matters of common concern.

KABA holds a number of events and activities throughout each year, and sponsors a free legal clinic for lower income individuals in Chicago, in conjunction with the Korean American Community Services. Earlier this year KABA awarded scholarships to two law students attending the University of Chicago and DePaul University for their academic excellence and dedication to the public interest in law.

Freshfields arbitration team wins bribe case for Republic of Kenya
Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer has won a significant decision from an International Centre for Settlement for Investment Disputes (ICSID) tribunal in the case of World Duty Free v The Republic of Kenya, with the tribunal dismissing in its entirety a $500m claim against Freshfields' governmental client. The claim was brought by an investor after the cancellation of his contract to run the duty free shops at Nairobi and Mombasa airports. In agreeing with the investor that he had gained his contract by bribing then-President Moi, the tribunal then ruled that the contract was gained illegally and that the Government was right to end it.

The award was rendered earlier this month by a tribunal constituted under the World Bank Rules and chaired by a former President of the International Court of Justice. The award is a landmark decision, both procedurally and substantively. Procedurally, the decision may be the first successful strike out of an ICSID claim on non-jurisdictional grounds. Arbitration partner Constantine Partasides, a member of the Freshfields team, also comments: 'This constitutes the first ever arbitral award, to our knowledge, that contains a finding of a payment of a cash bribe to a head of state.' Jan Paulsson, fellow arbitration partner defending the Republic of Kenya, noted: 'It is likely to become an enduring precedent.
