Howrey LLP Adds Biochemistry Expert as Partner in Chicago Office
Howrey LLP has announced that Nabeela Rasheed (McMillian), Ph.D., has joined the firm as a partner in the Intellectual Property group in the Chicago, IL office.

Dr. Rasheed, who joins Howrey from Marshall, Gerstein and Borun LLP, brings nearly a decade of experience in securing and enforcing intellectual property in the fields of genetic engineering, gene therapy, molecular biotechnology assays, drug screening and targeting, animal and plant breeding programs, among many other scientific frontiers.

“Nabeela is a tremendous addition to Howrey worldwide, and to our Chicago office. Her diverse life sciences practice and her outstanding ability as an attorney brings added depth, breadth and strength to Howrey’s widely recognized worldwide life sciences practice and to our broader intellectual property practice. She also adds to the great momentum that the Chicago office has been gathering in 2007 during which we have recruited several outstanding lateral partners and associates,” said Dr. David Clough, managing partner of Howrey’s Chicago office.

Dr. Rasheed’s experience ranges across all areas of intellectual property counseling. She has led or contributed to patent prosecution, opinions, patent interference proceedings, technology transfer services, patent litigation matters, intellectual property portfolio development, management, and commercialization.

Being at the forefront of biochemical science, Dr. Rasheed has taken up various committee positions on the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) and is a frequent speaker at various biotech and pharmaceutical conferences across the country.

Dr. Rasheed received her B.Sc. (with honors) in biochemistry from the University of Wales (U.K.). She went on to receive a Ph.D. in biochemistry from the University of Liverpool (U.K.), before completing two post-doctoral fellowships – one at the University of Bristol (U.K.), and the second at Texas Tech University Health Center. Dr. Rasheed then received her J.D. (with induction into the Order of the Coif) from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago-Kent College of Law in 2003.

Hogan & Hartson Litigation Partner Named Chair of the ABA Standing Committee on Election Law
Hogan & Hartson LLP litigation partner John C. (Jack) Keeney, Jr. has been appointed Chair of the American Bar Association (ABA) Standing Committee on Election Law. His term will begin in August 2007, following the adjournment of the ABA annual meeting in San Francisco. Keeney was appointed by ABA President-Elect William H. Neukom.

Keeney, in addition to election law representation of candidates, political parties, corporations and PACs, is a trial lawyer with extensive experience in complex litigation involving securities laws, fiduciary duties, legal malpractice, and the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). He is also the long-time Co-chair of Hogan & Hartson’s Ethics Committee, and formerly served as the partner in charge of the firm’s award-winning pro bono Community Services Department.

Keeney is a past President of the 84,000 member D.C. Bar and served in the ABA House of Delegates from 2003-2005. Other professional activities include service on the Advisory Committee on Procedures of the Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit.

The ABA Standing Committee on Election Law was created in 1973 with the purpose of developing and examining ways to improve the federal electoral process. According to the ABA, members of the Standing Committee and its Advisory Commission are nationally recognized election law authorities "who are charged with representing the Association's commitment to ensure that the nation's election laws are legally sound and are drafted to permit the broadest, least restrictive access by Americans to the ballot box."

Addition Expands Firm's Litigation Group
Blank Rome is pleased to announce Tyler Brody has joined the Firm as an associate in the litigation group, and will be based in the Philadelphia office.

Prior to joining Blank Rome, Mr. Brody served as an assistant district attorney in the Appeals and PCRA Units of the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office. In this capacity, Mr. Brody represented the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in over 100 cases before the Pennsylvania appellate courts. He also litigated numerous petitions filed under Pennsylvania’s Post-Conviction Relief Act in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.

Admitted to practice in Philadelphia and New York, Mr. Brody received his law degree from Emory University School of Law, where he received the Arthur K. Bolton Award for Excellence in Brief Writing and was member of the Emory Law School Moot Court Society. Mr. Brody also holds a bachelor of arts in political science from Columbia University.

Santo J. Costa Joins Smith Anderson's Life Sciences Practice
Smith, Anderson, Blount, Dorsett, Mitchell & Jernigan, LLP announced today that Santo J. Costa has joined the firm, as Of Counsel, in its life sciences practice.

Mr. Costa has over 35 years experience in executive level legal and management positions with international pharmaceutical and pharmaceutical services companies, including President and member of the Board of Directors of Quintiles Transnational Corp. and Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and member of the Board of Directors of Glaxo, Inc., now GlaxoSmithKline. Since leaving Quintiles, Mr. Costa has been in private practice working with companies in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, healthcare and related areas. Mr. Costa sits on the Boards of Directors of OSI Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: OSIP), CV Therapeutics (Nasdaq: CVTX) and is chairman of Labopharm Inc, (Nasdaq: DDSS; TSX: DDS ) as well as other privately-held companies, and civic and charitable organizations.

Mr. Costa joins Smith Anderson's leading life sciences team which brings to bear deep industry and transactional expertise for life sciences companies, as well as investors in those companies. In 2006, the firm handled over 50 life sciences and healthcare-related transactions representing over $4 billion in value, including licensing and collaborative arrangements, mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, financings, manufacturing and supply arrangements, and sale of drug royalty rights.

Firm Scores False Advertising Win in Second Circuit
On behalf of Time Warner Cable, firm attorneys successfully argued an appeal which led the Second Circuit to redefine several key doctrines in the law of false advertising. DirecTV brought the appeal following the District Court's issuance of a preliminary injunction enjoining the satellite carrier from airing nationally broadcast television commercials. Partners Saul B. Shapiro and Sarah E. Zgliniec and Associate Catherine A. Williams worked on this matter.

American Diabetes Association Names Thomas Spiesman New Jersey Leadership Council President-Elect
The northern New Jersey office of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) announced that Thomas Spiesman, Esq. will serve as incoming president of the organization’s New Jersey Leadership Council. Spiesman will assume his responsibilities as Council president on January 1, 2008.

“Having been personally involved with diabetes care and diabetes issues for many years, I have been drawn to the mission of the ADA. I am encouraged and excited by the tremendous advances in diabetes care over the past several years and remain committed to assisting the ADA in achieving its goal to prevent and cure diabetes,” said Spiesman, who is a principal with the law firm of Porzio, Bromberg & Newman in Morristown, NJ, and a member of the firm’s Environmental Law, Land Use and Real Estate Practice Group.

Spiesman has volunteered with the ADA for the past 15 years. As president of the ADA's New Jersey Leadership Council, one of his primary roles will be to increase awareness and foster relationships between the ADA and the local business community.

Steadman Joins Perkins Coie's Government Contracts Practice
Perkins Coie is pleased to announce that Anthony Steadman has joined the firm as of counsel in its Government Contracts practice. He will practice in Perkins Coie's Washington, D.C. office.

Steadman (age 47) joins the firm after retiring as a colonel with nearly 24 years of service in the U.S. Air Force. His distinguished career spanned three interrelated fields of government procurement including positions as program manager, contracting officer, and contracts attorney. Steadman has over 17 years' legal experience including virtually all aspects of government contract formation and administration throughout the life cycle of major weapon systems. He also served as a legislative liaison to the Pentagon. Steadman's last assignment was staff judge advocate for an Air Force Materiel Command product center.

"We are delighted to have Anthony join the firm," said John Devaney, Washington, D.C. managing partner. "His background provides intimate knowledge of the government contract process, which will enable him to be a knowledgeable advisor to our clients."

Steadman holds an LL.M. in government procurement from George Washington University Law School, a J.D. from Suffolk University Law School, an M.S. in contract management from the Air Force Institute of Technology and a B.S. in computer science from Birmingham-Southern College.
