Destination: China - U.S. Business Students Target Fulbright
Fulbright’s Beijing location was one of the stops on a tour of China this summer by a group of 30 graduate and undergraduate business students from Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee. Partner-in-charge Jeff Blount hosted the students at Fulbright's Beijing location and led a discussion of the opportunities for American businesses and professionals in China.

The students, accompanied by the university’s president, L. Randolph Lowry, III and his wife, visited six companies and professional firms in China. The purpose of the trip was to gain a greater understanding of global business and China’s growing importance in the world economy. It wasn’t all business, however. The group worked in visits to some of China’s best known tourist destinations, including the Great Wall, Macau Island, Hong Kong, the Forbidden City and the site of the 2008 Summer Olympics.

In addition to Fulbright, the students visited Hyundai Merchant and Marine, Hong Kong Disneyland, APCO Worldwide, Deloitte & Touche, and Cummins Inc.

Baker & McKenzie Announces 20% Increase in Revenue to US$1.829 Billion; Breaks US$1 Million Mark in Profits Per Partner
Baker & McKenzie today announced its global fee income increased 20% to US$1.829 billion in its fiscal year 2007 (ended June 30, 2007). This marked the Firm’s third consecutive year of double-digit revenue growth and the third consecutive year that the Firm’s rate of revenue growth has accelerated. Of total FY07 fees, 41% was generated from Europe and the Middle East, 35% in North and Latin America and 24% in Asia, with strong growth experienced in all regions of the Firm.

Baker & McKenzie also reported a 29% increase in net income and a 22% increase in per partner profits (PPP) over the previous fiscal year, taking its PPP above the US$1 million level for the first time. The Firm has raised PPP by 63% since adopting a more focused global Firm Strategy three years ago.

"We are very pleased with these financial results," said John Conroy, Chairman of Baker & McKenzie's Executive Committee. “Our strong FY07 financial performance is the product of our efforts over the past three years to implement a firmwide Strategy that better leverages for our clients the extensive global platform we have been steadily growing over the past six decades. It is the most developed global platform in the legal business. As our clients’ needs increasingly become more global, we are now deploying our well-established global resources more strategically to meet those client needs in our core practices throughout the world.”

Baker & McKenzie’s strategy is focused on five key performance areas: deepening major client relationships; enhancing core practices; expanding in key geographic markets, especially leading financial centers; better managing our talent to ensure consistently high quality of service globally, and improving profitability – as a key enabler of the strategy.

“These five strategic priorities are translating into greater success for us as a Firm,” said Conroy. “Our strong financial results demonstrate that major clients increasingly value the breadth and depth of services we provide, especially as they look to rationalize the number of law firms they use in the world. At the same time, our greater strategic focus and improving profitability have strengthened our ability to attract and retain high-quality lateral talent in the world’s most competitive legal markets to meet those client expectations.”

Congress and Vice President Honor Vander Jagt
For a man who had one of the most partisan jobs in all of Washington, the late U.S. Rep. Guy Vander Jagt turned out to be more of a uniting than a dividing force. That is how his friends and colleagues remembered him on August 2 at a Capitol Hill memorial service, which honored the former Michigan Congressman and Baker Hostetler attorney who died on June 22 at age 75 from pancreatic cancer.

Vander Jagt's service drew more than 500 people—a mix of current and former lawmakers along with high-powered lobbyists and government officials, friends befitting a man who spent more than 40 years in and around Washington, D.C. Vander Jagt, of Luther, represented western Michigan in Congress. In addition to Vice President Dick Cheney, the audience included two former House Speakers, Republican and Democratic House and Senate leadership, numerous Committee Chairmen, current and former Cabinet Secretaries, ambassadors, two governors, and many current and former house and senate members.

The service was held in the stately House Ways and Means Committee hearing room in the Longworth House Office Building. Vander Jagt had served for many years on the committee, which handles trade, tax and health policy.

Two prominent Democrats and House committee chairmen—Charlie Rangel of New York and Tom Lantos of California—spoke at the service. Rangel currently chairs the Ways and Means Committee, which is where he and Vander Jagt met and befriended each other. "This is Guy's home," said Rangel of the committee hearing room. "This is the place of his creative thinking. This is the place where he made friends doing the nation's work." In his tribute, Vice President Cheney praised Vander Jagt for his oratorical skills, noting that "when he stepped to the well (of the House), Democrats and Republican alike stopped to pay attention."

"Guy was good company," said the vice president, who was introduced to Vander Jagt by then President Gerald Ford some 30 years ago. "He was a good example and a very, very good man."

Cheney sat beside Vander Jagt's wife, Carol, and his daughter, Virginia (Ginny), during the service, which included a string quartet and a pianist and vocalist from the United States Marine Band. Several large black and white photos of Vander Jagt looked out at the crowd.

Steve Lotterer, longtime aide and friend, said: "Guy's spirit brought out the best in both sides of the political and policy debate—and won him respect on both sides of the political aisle . . . Being with Guy made you feel special. And I was blessed with that feeling as we criss-crossed this great land for over one million miles—to all 50 states—in over 750 campaign and speech appearances."

Bill Schweitzer, who has served as Managing Partner of Baker Hostetler's Washington, D.C., office for more than a decade said, "His clients knew that Guy was working for them and not himself and they appreciated that. In simple terms, Guy Vander Jagt ‘got it.' So many people are unable to see contrary positions and so unwilling to even listen to opposing points of view. Not Guy! He listened, evaluated and treated everyone with respect. In our law office, Guy was respected, liked and loved by everyone—from the mailroom to the executive office—because he did not vary his behavior because of a person's standing or position."

"Guy was always bigger than partisanship," said former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (at right) of Vander Jagt, who oversaw House GOP campaign recruitment and fundraising efforts for 18 years. "He loved America more than he loved the Republican Party."

Ginny Vander Jagt told the crowd that her father was a "master at bringing out the music in other people's lives." She said that his final days were made better by all the cards, flowers and visits from his many Washington friends. "Your friendship lightened those dark days and brightened his life," she said.

WilmerHale Announces Recipients of Pickering Fellowships
John H. Pickering inspired generations of lawyers with his lifelong and much-heralded commitment to public service. In his honor, WilmerHale has created the Pickering Fellowships, a program that allows WilmerHale associates to spend six months each working in a pro bono organization. Katie Gillespie and David Giordano are the first selected to lend their legal skills to a public interest organization and carry out the organization’s mission.

Ms. Gillespie will spend her fellowship at The Washington Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs (WLCCRUA). WLCCRUA was established in 1968 by Washington, DC’s leading law firms, including WilmerHale, in response to the racial disturbances sweeping through Washington and other cities at that time. Today it is the premier civil rights legal organization in the city and sets a national standard for civil rights advocacy. WLCCRUA’s work focuses on six project areas: equal employment opportunity, fair housing, prisoners’ rights, public education, disability rights and immigrant and refugee rights.

Mr. Giordano will spend his fellowship with The Medical-Legal Partnership for Children at Boston Medical Center ("MLPC"). MLPC allows pediatric clinicians to work with lawyers to ensure that families can meet their children's basic needs. MLPC addresses non-biological factors (food, housing, education and safety) known to influence children’s health. Started in 1993 by Boston Medical Center and Boston University, it has expanded to over 30 sites nationally.

WilmerHale has a long history of community service and philanthropy, based on the strong principles John Pickering held in founding the firm. Today the firm pays tribute to his legacy and strengthens its commitment to the community with Ms. Gillespie and Mr. Giordano’s work as Pickering Fellows. WilmerHale congratulates them both and is proud to have them represent the firm as the inaugural Pickering Fellows.
