Hunton & Williams Brings 'Street Law' to NYC High School
Hunton & Williams Brings 'Street Law' to Martin Luther King Jr. High School for Law, Advocacy and Community Justice; Major Law Firm to Provide Career Guidance and Motivation to New York City Public School Students

Nearly 250 students at the Martin Luther King Jr. High School for Law, Advocacy and Community Justice will gain valuable insight into the legal profession as Hunton & Williams LLP brings "Street Law" to their classrooms. The major US law firm today announced the launch of this innovative program designed to expose high school students to the exciting career possibilities available in the legal field.

"Hunton & Williams is bringing 'Street Law' to Martin Luther King Jr. High School to educate students on the opportunities available to them in the legal field and to inspire them through dialogue with professionals with whom they share similar cultural backgrounds," said Scott Hershman, Hunton & Williams partner and program chairperson. "It's the type of conversation and motivation they need at a young age and can have a long-term positive effect."

The program begins Friday, November 17, with a keynote address by Robert J. Grey Jr., former president of the American Bar Association and a partner with Hunton & Williams. Grey will address the entire student body, comprised of 49 percent African-American and 49 percent Hispanic students. He will share anecdotes from his own distinguished career such as the challenges he faced as an African American, his efforts to increase diversity in the legal profession, and the importance of participating in the country's judicial system.

The program continues on Monday, November 20, as several partners and associates from Hunton & Williams speak to individual classes about careers in law. Wally Martinez, managing partner of Hunton & Williams will lead these conversations. Martinez is the first minority to hold the position of managing partner at Hunton & Williams and is among the few Hispanics to lead a major law firm in the United States.

"Hunton & Williams has a strong commitment to diversity and a history of helping communities through meaningful programs such as this one," stated Martinez. "We're happy to have this opportunity to demonstrate for these students how academics are applied in the workplace."

On Tuesday, November 21, nearly 100 students will tour the Hunton & Williams offices and speak one-on-one with judges, lawyers, paralegals, librarians, court reporters, law firm administrators, and special guest representatives from the US Attorneys Office, the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, Federal Bureau of Investigation, US Secret Service, Door Legal Services, and the New York Attorney General's Office.

"Street Law" is part of Washington, DC-based Street Law Inc., a practical, participatory education program about law, democracy, and human rights. The program is being implemented in partnership with Fordham Law School to foster academic relationships between the law school and high school students.

Fenwick & West's Silicon Valley Venture Capital Survey Reveals Continued Strong Increase in Valuations in 3rd Quarter of 2006
Fenwick & West LLP, one of the nation's premier law firms providing comprehensive legal services to technology and life sciences clients, today announced results of its Third Quarter 2006 Silicon Valley Venture Capital Survey.

The survey analyzed the valuations and terms of venture financings for 120 technology and life science companies headquartered in the Silicon Valley/San Francisco Bay Area that reported raising capital during the third quarter of 2006.

The results showed a continuation of the strong positive trend in venture valuations," said Barry Kramer, partner in the firm and co-author of the survey.

Up rounds exceeded down rounds for the eleventh consecutive quarter," said Kramer. During the quarter, up rounds outpaced down rounds 67% to 24%, with 9% of the rounds remaining flat.

An up round is one in which the price per share at which a company sells its stock has increased since its prior financing round. Conversely, a down round is one in which the price per share has declined since a company's prior financing round.

Fenwick & West's Venture Capital Barometer™ – which measures the change in share price of Silicon Valley companies funded during the quarter compared with the share price of their previous financing round – was up 49% for the quarter.

"This compares to 34% in the second quarter of 2006, 64% in the first quarter, and 45% in the fourth quarter of 2005 – forming a very positive trend line," said Kramer.

Michael Patrick, also a partner in the firm and survey co-author, said, "As reported by Dow Jones/VentureSource, aggregate venture investment in the U.S. during the quarter was $6.4 billion, which is a similar amount to the previous two quarters. If current trends continue through the remainder of the year, 2006 is on track to have the largest amount of venture investing in the U.S. since 2001."

"This increased volume of venture investment," he said, "combined with the improved valuations we are seeing, is making for a robust venture financing environment.
