CRAVATH REPRESENTS JPMORGAN AND BEAR STEARNS IN IDEARC FINANCINGS

Partners Named to Top Litigators List
Bryan Cave LLP Chicago Partner Mary "Mimi" Moore and Kansas City Partner Craig O’Dear recently were named among the country’s top litigators by Lawdragon magazine.

Lawdragon 500 Leading Litigators in America includes trial lawyers from 25 practice specialties. Moore was highlighted for her well-known work on employment issues and class derivative actions. O’Dear made the list especially for his work defending World Wrestling Entertainment against a $500 million wrongful-death claim.

Lawdragon creates its guides to the best lawyers in the United States through a combination of online balloting and independent research. The publication’s reporters and editors interview thousands of lawyers to get their input on the top "dragons" in any region or practice field. They also collect votes through an online ballot. Those submissions then are researched and vetted by the editorial staff. Lawdragon also surveys the quality of the votes an individual receives (more weight, for instance, to the vote of a corporate counsel than to a partner in the nominee’s firm).

"Inclusion in the final 500 is based on number and quality of votes, how ‘of-the-moment’ a particular practice area or case is and the impact the individual has on the profession overall," the publication states.

Moore has represented management in a variety of litigation at the administrative level, in state and federal courts in numerous jurisdictions, at the American Arbitration Association and in the U.S. Supreme Court. Her experience includes the defense of both class and individual actions. She has litigated cases involving Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, the National Labor Relations Act, the Family and Medical Leave Act, various state discrimination statutes and common law and tort claims. Her practice also involves advising corporations on a variety of employment matters.

O’Dear is a trial lawyer with experience prosecuting and defending high-stakes litigation in state and federal courts in more than 20 states. Earlier this year, O’Dear was retained by H&R Block to assume the lead trial counsel role in a breach of contract case asserting $103 million pending in federal court in South Carolina. The trial team was able to settle that case for $3 million. In 2005, he was lead trial counsel for H&R Block in a West Virginia state court class action seeking $2.1 billion in damages and statutory penalties. Later that year, O’Dear assumed the lead trial counsel role for Teledyne Continental Motors in a double fatality case pending in North Carolina involving two wealthy, high-profile plaintiffs, with an actual damage claim exceeding $100 million. Both cases were settled favorably. O’Dear was retained by World Wrestling Entertainment to defend a wrongful death case arising out of the accidental death of WWE wrestler Owen Hart in Kansas City in May 1999. The lawsuit sought damages of $500 million in actual and punitive damages and was settled in 2000 for $18 million. O’Dear then represented WWE in a contribution action against British manufacturer Lewmar to recover a substantial portion of the $18 million settlement. That case settled in September 2003 during the fourth week of trial, with Lewmar paying WWE $9 million.

O’Dear has extensive experience in intellectual property litigation in the areas of restrictive covenants and misappropriation of trade secrets. He has defended lawsuits involving a variety of products, including airplanes, airplane engines, helicopter turbine engines, grade-crossing warning systems, racquetball safety eyewear, child restraint systems for automobiles, farm equipment, multipiece truck wheels, automobile tires, chainsaws and playground equipment
