Barnes & Thornburg LLP Re-enters Top 100 in National Law Journal Ranking
Barnes & Thornburg LLP ranks as one of the 100 largest law firms in the United States, according to a new survey by the National Law Journal (NLJ).

The NLJ ranked Barnes & Thornburg 98th, up from its 102nd ranking in 2005. The annual ranking surveys 300 U.S. law firms each year to determine the largest firms by total number of full-time equivalent attorneys. Only two other Indiana law firms made the list at the 137th and 168th spots.

At the time of the survey, the firm had 421 attorneys throughout its seven offices.

“We are pleased to have made the top 100 again,” said Alan Levin, firmwide managing partner of Barnes & Thornburg. “The advantage to using a firm of our size is two-fold. First, it enables us to give our local clients access to large number of attorneys with diverse experiences. It also positions us to attract regional and national clients who may seek firms to assist them with projects of increasing scope and size.”

The firm provides legal services to a diverse group of clients in more than 50 practice areas, including business counseling, real estate services, healthcare, governmental services and finance, environmental, intellectual property, creditors' rights, labor and employment, litigation, energy, telecommunications, transportation and utilities.

Firm attorneys represent clients in many industries, including financial services, technology, international business, life sciences, healthcare, government, higher education, manufacturing, and nonprofit organizations and foundations, among others.

Worth Magazine Names Venable’s Stefan Tucker One of the Nation’s Top 100 Attorneys
Venable LLP partner Stefan Tucker has been named one of the nation's top 100 attorneys by Worth magazine. The list, to be published in the magazine's December issue, includes attorneys who represent some of the country's wealthiest clients. Mr. Tucker is one of only three attorneys from Washington, DC to be named.

For more than four decades, Mr. Tucker has represented some of the Washington area's best-known corporations, individuals, families, and entrepreneurs. The Worth ranking is the latest legal honor bestowed on Mr. Tucker, a partner in a number of Venable's practice groups, including real estate, tax, and trusts and estates. He was previously named to the Worth list in 2005.

Recent recognition of Mr. Tucker has not been limited to the Worth ranking. In November, Biznow on Business named him to its "Top 25 Power Lawyers in Washington Commercial Real Estate" list, and peers have repeatedly selected him for inclusion in Woodward & White's Best Lawyers in America.

Editors at Worth made their list selections based on feedback from professionals in the wealth management industry.

Mr. Tucker earned his J.D. from the University of Michigan (1963), receiving Order of the Coif, and holds a B.B.A. from the University of Michigan (1960).

As one of American Lawyer's top 100 law firms, Venable LLP has attorneys practicing in all areas of corporate and business law, complex litigation, intellectual property and government affairs. Venable serves corporate, institutional, governmental, nonprofit and individual clients throughout the U.S. and around the world from its headquarters in Washington, D.C. and offices in California, Maryland, New York and Virginia.

WolfBlock To Host Third Annual Israel Venture Conference
Twenty-five Israeli companies seeking funding from U.S. venture capital funds and angel investors will travel to Philadelphia for the third annual Trendlines/WolfBlock Venture Conference, scheduled for Thursday, December 7. The conference will take place from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at WolfBlock's offices at 1650 Arch Street.

Israel is one of the world leaders in technology and life sciences. It is the third largest recipient of venture capital in the world, after Silicon Valley and Boston. More companies from Israel are traded on NASDAQ than from any other foreign country except Canada. Many of the promising Israeli companies that attend the conference will be considering the greater Philadelphia region for their U.S. headquarters.

The Israeli companies, which are from the life sciences, homeland security and IT sectors, will present to and network with venture capitalists, angel and strategic investors, investment bankers, and corporate business development executives. Approximately 80 investors are expected to attend. Additionally, there will be panel discussions with legal, marketing and U.S. government relations professionals from the event's two sponsors: WolfBlock and the Trendlines Group, Israel's leading international marketing and business development firm.

The conference has seen an annual rise in the number of Israeli companies and U.S. investors participating.

"This conference, which has grown in stature over the years, is the perfect way to showcase our commitment to our Israeli and venture capital practices," said David Gitlin, chair of WolfBlock's Corporate and Securities practice group. "Our aim is to assist promising Israeli companies to penetrate the U.S. markets and to consider this region as their gateway to the U.S."

WolfBlock's established commitment to Israel is reflected in its years of experience representing Israeli clients, close ties to the Israeli business community and a comprehensive understanding of the unique business and legal needs of Israeli companies working in the United States. The firm has a strong commitment as well to working with early-stage companies, many of which are from Israel, as part of its Emerging Growth practice.

Drue Jennings Named 2006 Kansas Citian of the Year
Shughart Thomson & Kilroy attorney Drue Jennings has been named Kansas Citian of the Year by the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. The award was given to Jennings at the chamber’s annual dinner November 21st in front of 1600 people. Jennings who is the former chief executive officer at KCP&L was humbled by the Chamber’s choice.

“It is indeed an honor because of the nature of who it has been given to in the past. I feel non-deserving really. This award has been given to pillars of the community and people I have always admired, “ said Jennings.

Jennings became CEO of KCP&L at the relatively young age of 40. He said he learned from the movers and shakers of Kansas City about serving the community.

“Everyone needs to give back to the community. I learned from some of the best Henry Bloch, Paul Henson, Don Hall and Bill Dunn, “ said Jennings.

Jennings sits on a number of boards and has been active in helping save Union Station. He has also worked with the Full Employment Council, Mid-America Minority Business Development Council and co-founded Kansas City Harmony. Jennings told The Kansas City Star in an editorial, “My thesis is that, if racial attitudes don’t improve, we will be cheating ourselves out of our full economic potential. This is not a moral preachment; it is a practical business consideration.”

Past winners include Don and Adele Hall, Shirley and Barnett Helzberg, Lamar Hunt, Lucille Bluford, Emanuel Cleaver and Tom McDonnell.

Jennings works as Senior Counsel in General Business at Shughart Thomson & Kilroy, P.C.
