Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP Announces Addition to Columbus Office
Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP is pleased to announce that Anthony Sharett has joined the firm as a new associate attorney in its Columbus, Ohio office.

Anthony will focus his efforts on litigation and general practice. He comes to Shumaker, Loop & Kendrick, LLP after spending three years as an attorney at the Ohio Department of Commerce where he handled legal and regulatory matters affecting the banking, mortgage and credit union industries. Anthony gained significant experience addressing workers’ compensation and general labor and employment matters while representing clients at a small Columbus law firm upon his graduation from law school at the Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University.

Anthony is the new lawyers’ committee chair for the Columbus Bar Association, a member of the board of the John Mercer Langston Bar Association, and serves on the board for the North Side Child Development Center. He resides in Reynoldsburg with his wife, Hope, and has one-year-old daughter, Ava.

Haynes and Boone Partner Addresses Cross-Border Legal Services at US-Mexico Law Institute in Florida
Haynes and Boone partner Larry B. Pascal recently spoke at the US-Mexico Law Institute in St. Augustine, Fla. on the cross-border legal services market, discussing recent reforms in Texas.

Mr. Pascal, the chair of his firm’s Americas Practice Group and based in Dallas, spoke on a panel with several eminent authorities on the subject, including a former chair of the American Bar Association International Law Section and a former president of the Mexican Bar Association.

As former chair of the International Law Section of the State Bar of Texas, Mr. Pascal led a successful campaign to adopt the ABA Model Foreign Legal consultant rule. He is currently working on a second phase to make Texas a more competitive international legal marketplace.

The Haynes and Boone Latin American practice has been recognized as one of the leaders in Latin America by numerous business organizations and publications, including Latin Lawyer. As part of its Latin American practice, Haynes and Boone maintains one of the largest Mexico City practices of any US law firm. Haynes and Boone Partner Named Top Board Member By Promise House
Haynes and Boone, LLP announced Monday that partner Joyce Mazero, leader of the firm’s Franchise and Distribution Practice Group, recently received the honor of Outstanding Board Member from Dallas nonprofit agency Promise House.

Ms. Mazero is chair-elect for the Promise House board of directors and has chaired the group’s Governance Committee for the past three years. She also led the effort to form a Leadership Council for Promise House that operates separately from the board of directors.

Promise House has provided shelter for runaway, homeless and at-risk youth since 1984. The non-profit provides crisis intervention, emergency shelter, transitional living, education, counseling, street outreach, and advocacy programs for youth and families in crisis.

Ms. Mazero, who earlier this year received the International Franchise Association’s Bonny Levine Award, currently serves as Chair of the Women’s Franchise & Distribution Forum, leading the development of the WFDF “Bootcamp for Growth.” The Bootcamp helps female entrepreneurs and franchisees to obtain the skills needed to expand their operations through franchising. She also sits on the board of the Women’s Foodservice Forum and serves as the WFF’s Chair of Executive Development. As Executive Development Chair, Mazero works extensively on the WFF’s Corporate Board Link program which promotes and places women on the boards of private and public companies. She has also served on many boards and committees within the IFA, including a term on the IFA Board of Directors. She has chaired both the Advisory Council of the IFA Supplier Forum and the IFA Women's Franchise Committee Leadership Conferences 2000-2003.

Ms. Mazero also served as editorial advisor for the book “Franchising For Dummies,” and currently serves as Managing Editor of “Franchising - The World View” for Franchise UPDATE magazine.

Tulsa partner Sidney K. Swinson has been invited to become a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy
As stated in the The American College of Bankruptcy’s mission statement, the college was established in 1989 as an honorary association of bankruptcy and insolvency professionals. The organization recognizes “exceptional bankruptcy professionals distinguished by their work, their contributions to the administration of justice, and their integrity; and employs the talents, resources and goodwill of its Fellows to promote professional excellence, collegiality, scholarship and access to justice”.

A thorough selection process is conducted in each federal judicial circuit by an admissions council to locate candidates which fit the strict admissions criteria. Recommendations are made by this council to the larger council composed of all the federal judicial district councils and then considered by a Board of Regents. At this time the college is composed of approximately 650 Fellows chosen by this method. “Only those with the highest level of character, integrity, professional expertise and leadership” are chosen.

The mission of the college is to set standards of achievement in the bankruptcy profession, as well as funding projects that highlight the bankruptcy practice, including undergraduate and graduate programs relating to a bankruptcy practice.

Sid Swinson has been a member of GableGotwals since 1988, and presently serves as a Director of the firm. In addition to being an Adjunct Professor or Law at the University of Tulsa College of Law, Sid represents clients in both business and consumer bankrutpcy cases and is on the Trustee Panel for the United States Bankruptcy Court in the Northern and Eastern Districts of Oklahoma. Since 1998, Sid has served as an Adjunct Settlement Judge for the United States Bankruptcy Court and District Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma, and presently chairs the Local Rules Committee for the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Oklahoma.

Sid received his undergraduate degree from Notre Dame in Business Management in 1977 and his Juris Doctorate from the University of Tulsa College of Law in 1980.

Rajesh Patel Voted One of Houston's Top Professionals on the Fast Track
Rajesh D. Patel, an associate in the Houston Office of Winstead Sechrest & Minick P.C., was voted one of Houston's Top Professionals on the Fast Track! by H Texas Magazine. The Top Professionals on the Fast Track List is compiled through a combination of peer voting and reader nominations from individuals selected throughout the year for various Houston's Top Professionals lists such as Top Doctors, Top Lawyers, etc. Over the last six months, H Texas Magazine polled these individuals asking them to nominate the young professionals they see as the up and coming star in their field. Patel will be featured in the December issue of H Texas Magazine, which will be distributed to over 240,000 Houstonians.

A member of Winstead's IP Section, Patel focuses his practice on patent, trademark and copyright law including patent and trademark prosecution, licensing and foreign filings. Prior to becoming an attorney, Patel worked as a process design engineer, primarily focusing on equipment design and process flow diagrams for use in the manufacturing of fine chemicals. He is fluent in Gujarati, one of the 14 official languages of India.

Patel received his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center and his B.S. from the University of Texas at Austin in chemical engineering. He's a member of the State Bar of Texas and the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and he's admitted to try cases before the United States District Court for the Northern District of Texas and the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

ALLEN MATKINS STRENGTHENS ITS HIGHLY REGARDED LAND USE AND CORPORATE PRACTICE GROUP
Allen Matkins Leck Gamble Mallory & Natsis LLP, a leading California business and real estate law firm, announces the addition of Michael W. Shonafelt and John E. Stoner to its Los Angeles and Orange County offices, respectively. Shonafelt is a former land use partner with Nossaman Guthner Knox & Elliott, and Stoner is a former corporate finance shareholder with Greenberg Traurig.

Shonafelt’s career has focused on assisting telecommunication companies to secure land use entitlements necessary for regional network deployment and litigation associated with those entitlements. He is also an expert in drafting public agency and private company entitlement strategies, ensuring compliance with the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), and representing clients before local governmental decisionmakers and in state and federal court.

Some of Shonafelt’s recent work includes representing Sprint PCS in two federal court decisions of first impression (2005 and 2006) that used the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and section 7901 of the California Public Resources Code to determine that cities and counties cannot regulate wireless telecommunications facilities in the public rights of-way on aesthetic grounds. The groundbreaking decisions were of monumental importance to the wireless telecommunications industry. In addition, Shonafelt has represented Standard Pacific Homes in obtaining land use entitlements, and Allen Matkins Leck Gamble Mallory & Natsis LLP in CEQA, endangered species and ubdivision Map Act litigation. His expertise also extends to representing clients in Coastal Act compliance matters.
